I don't doubt that Hutch could (and certainly would WANT) to come back earlier, but realistically 4 months is mid-Feb... after the super bowl. If he was able to cut it down to three months that wouldn't be until the playoffs.
-
The second part is a little hard to pick... I mean if you just said who do you want I'd say Crosby because I think he fits the Lions mentality the best. But the cost involved is obviously going to be a huge factor. If Crosby's gonna cost 3 firsts, well... I think I'd be more willing to go for someone with a cheaper price tag even if I like the guy a little less.

Given how amazing Monty has been, it's got me to thinking: Is he the best player we've picked up (either via FA or trade) from a division rival?

Week Seven: Detroit Lions (4-1) @ Minnesota Vikings (5-0)
RedRamage replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
Currently the Vikings opponents are are combined 16/13 and the Lions opponents are 13/16... so the Vikings have had a tougher scheduled... they have the better record, they'll be playing at home and the Lions just lost Hutch. I can easily see the Vikings being favored. I certainly don't think this should be considered an automatic L by any stretch for the Lions, but I also think it could very easily be... especially if Davis ends up being out at well. We'll be down both starting DEs, one starting LB, one starting CB. This is gonna have to be a 2023 win with the offense just putting up a super high score that the opposing team can't match. -

Makes sense. I mean looking at it I can't believe that it wasn't both bones, but the quotes only talking about Tibia were confusing. -
I think you might be giving Avila too much credit personally, but only a little too much. I think many people look at Avila as getting and "F" grade and without trying too hard to put words in your mouth you're maybe giving him a C or C- minus grade... certainly not good enough, but not a complete failure either. Personally I'd give Avila a D or D-. I fully get that he had somethings working against him in terms of a depleted farm system and Chris taking over (with tighter purse strings), but I feel like even with the limited resources he had he didn't nothing. Looking at his trade history (https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/03/gm-trade-history-tigers-al-avila.html) there is ONE person who is still on the roster: Jake Rodgers. (To be fair, there is also one other person who would've been on the roster most likely, had Harris not traded him: Paredes.) Otherwise the trade results have been just bit player after bust after bit player. No one even remotely special acquired from trades. Even Rodgers is "meh" at best. Now in drafting Avila did better... how much of that was because he was consistently picking high is hard to say, but even in drafting he hasn't been phenomenal. 2016: Matt Manning - Jury is still out. Kyle Funkhouser - decent reliever at times. 2017: Alex Faedo - decent, I guess. Will Vest - Good reliever 2018: Mize - Good when not injuried, Parker Meadows - Looks top be a super star, Kody Clemens... meh. Skubal... super star. 2019: Greene - Good to great player, but has issues staying healthy. Still a good pick. Lipcius.. meh. Kreidler... meh. Carpenter - A good pick and 19th round at that. Brieske... looks to be a good player. 2020: Tork - Jury is still out, but not looking good. Dingler... jury is still out. Keith, looks to be a star. 2021: Jobe - jury is still out, but leaning towards being a star. Madden... looks decent. Hurder... looks good. 2022: Jung - jury is still out. So in seven years of drafting by my count Avila has 6 very good picks with at least 6 more that have looked decent or good at times and a few others that it's too early to tell for sure on. I don't claim to be an expert on draft analysis... I can't honestly say if this is good or not based on what we normally see out of the league, but it doesn't feel like it's been solid draft after solid draft. It just feels like he's done okay drafting with a few excellent picks. So in the end it comes down to the behind the scenes stuff. How much was stuff put in place by Avila? How much of it was his wanting it vs. "everyone else is doing it, so I guess we should too."? Unless he was revolutionary in building up the organization in terms of how they scouted, developed, and built their team I can't view Avila as anything other than a D-level GM during his Tigers tenure.

Yeah, I'm not doctor, but if he's "just" the tibia that's broken and it's "just" a single break, that seems to be good-ish news in terms of what it could have been. -

I want Decker to report as eligible for every remaining play this game. -
Guess Rob was right all along... the Tigers failed to win the WS.
-
I strongly suspect this is made up BS to get clicks, but it's interesting to think about. What do you suspect the Lions would need to give up to land both? Would you be willing to do it?
-
I suspect that there are a large number of behind the scenes stuff that's already well under way though. Obviously this doesn't mean they can't back out, just that they'd likely have to pay (or already have) payed a lot of money to start the process rolling... money which would be lost.

Watching yesterday's game and I was really struck by how much the "Marathon" ad patch on the Guardians' jerseys stood out. Did we just luck out in meijer being nice about a small logo and letting the color match the uniform? I mean ideally there wouldn't be ads on the jerseys, but I get that money talks so the ads aren't going away. We could have gotten a lot worse than what we go in terms of ads: Edit to ad: Just to be clear here... I'm strictly talking talking about the look of the logo and how well it blends in or doesn't blend in with the jersey. This isn't a commentary on any of the companies here.

I thought I remember someone saying like just a week ago that Glenn had "really stepped up this season." Now he's trash that makes other everyone else look like superstars?
-
This was a pretty bad bye week for the Lions... Vikings win... Bears win... Packers win... Even the Cowboys win. 😞 I guess at least the 49ers lost, so there's that.

Personally I think it Leersehn's work is more of a case of undoing the extremism that Stump painted. Like according to Stump: Ty Cobb was a horrible person because he did W and X and Y and Z. Leersehn seemed to be saying: Well actually he didn't do W. He did do X, but the details surrounding it were reported wrong, everyone of the era was doing Y, and Z's only source is another player who had a long standing grudge with Cobb. Again I'll need to re-read the book sometime because it's been a while. And on that note, I would be curious if you have other books/sources that you'd recommend.

I think this argument would have been much more persuasive 20 years ago. These days with the internet this information is easily available for everyone with just a few clicks and a few google searches. The HOF isn't really a education source... I mean, I'm sure there are plenty of people who learn something new after visiting there, but it's not like the ultimate source for baseball info. Honestly HOF entry is more of a honoring of a player for what he did in/for baseball. In that regard I have no problem with dis-allowing people that baseball doesn't want associated with them.

Now I'm gonna have to re-read it sometime soon... My basic take away was that Cobb was, more or less, about what the average southern man of the era was like... which includes being prejudice/racist to some level. This doesn't make Cobb a saint of course, but the perception that he was MORE aggressive than, or MORE racist than, or MORE sexist than your average baseball player of the era is probably wrong. I don't think the author was trying to paint Cobb as perfect, but just not the extremist that he's been viewed as via the work of Stump. I believe that his showing of the Freep being racist is showing what culture was like at that time. I think the author pointing how some of the stories were inaccurate (the one example being the fight Cobb got into with an elevator operator and with a watchman at a hotel NOT being black men, but instead being white men) shows how Stump created a false narrative. All in all Cobb was almost certainly racist/prejudice to some level and simply saying: "Well, so was everyone" isn't really a vindication. I'm repeating myself here, but I'm not saying Cobb was a great morally upstanding man who we should honor and respect and elevate as a wonderful human. I am saying that probably any sports figure from the era had as much questionable about them as Cobb so if someone wants to shy away from being a fan of Cobb because he was [x] or he was [y] then I would expect them to behave the same way about nearly everyone from this era. (Just to be 100% clear: I am NOT saying you are acting that way towards Cobb while not towards other players of the era.)

https://www.amazon.com/Ty-Cobb-Terrible-Charles-Leerhsen/dp/1451645791/ This is a great read on Ty Cobb where the authors try to get to the source info as much as possible. Their conclusion (if I'm remembering correct, it's been a few years since I read it) is that Ty Cobb, for his era, was not really a stand out. Obviously this doesn't make him a saint, but much of the idea that he was an evil guy who was very racist, very aggressive, hated women, etc. is either greatly exaggerated or straight made up fiction.

I would say yes, it has improved. Dramatically?? Eh, probably not dramatically, but I do believe it's better. Having said that, last night's game did NOT look better. -

I did think it might have been a good idea to run more late in the game to eat up clock and try to give the defense a breather, but at the same time I'm not going to complain too much with scoring fast when you're already leading.* *Obviously in select situations, like 4 minutes to go, down by 5 pts, you're prefer to use up as much time as possible before scoring a TD, but this wasn't one of those situations. -

Win percentage for the Lions means as much as playoff chances for the Tigers.
