I spent a bit of time riding with Forgotten Harvest in Metro Detroit. they collect food from grocery stores and some restaurants. This was about 15 years ago and there was a significant amount of food, depending on store. Most of it was stuff like bread, produce and a bit of meat. According to their website they collect over 42 million pounds of food to redistribute to local food distribution groups. Gleaners website puts their number around 50 million pounds of food. That doesn't count the amount of food groceries and restaurants dump.
