Just an aside re Rathbun, apparently he had a medical emergency just prior to the Hawks game earlier this week. Latest reports say he's ok, it was apparently dehydration. Scary though.
-
I ran across this article from shortly after Rathbun was let go. It's only one side of the discussion, but it seems that they were kept out of the loop. https://scholar.lib.vt.edu/VA-news/VA-Pilot/issues/1995/vp950314/03140415.htm

Which one received a bad conduct discharge after being convicted of bouncing checks and attempted theft of $10,000 while in Iraq in 2008? Which one had their rank reduced to corporal according to court martial records. He may be innocent of espionage, but he's no friggin Boy Scout

Pertinent interview on the trade....before the announcement. The U-S wasn't going to be able to get them both out at the same time on any deal IMO https://www.vox.com/today-explained/23298362/brittney-griner-wnba-russia-viktor-bout Sean Rameswaram Let’s just get right out the gate with this question. Viktor Bout for Brittney Griner. Fair trade? Douglas Farah I don’t think it’s a fair trade, but I think it’s a necessary trade. I think that Viktor has actual blood on his hands for many conflicts and has done horrendous things, or empowered people to do horrendous things for the years he was trafficking in weapons to Charles Taylor in Liberia, the RUF in Sierra Leone, Laurent Kabila in Democratic Republic of Congo, the Northern Alliance and then the Taliban in Afghanistan. So there’s nothing fair about it in terms of absolute justice. But I do think that he is not in a position to wreak a lot more havoc in his life. And I think Brittney Griner is in significant danger in Russia because of her sexual orientation, because of who she is, and because of the prize that the Russians have in her. That is worth the trade at this point to bring her back. Sean Rameswaram How are we supposed to wrap our heads around how insanely lopsided this is? It’s estimated Viktor Bout may be responsible for the deaths of maybe tens of thousands of brown people around the world. And Brittney Griner maybe smokes some weed once in a while. Douglas Farah I don’t think it’s a fair trade. I have gone out of my way in talking about this and in our book and the other things to point out how absolutely horrific what Viktor Bout did, what he enabled people to do over a period of years. And you talked about, you know, the tens of thousands of deaths, but there are an equal number more of rapes. There are that many burned villages. There are that many children who were kidnapped, often forced to kill their own parents, burn their own villages, and become child soldiers. So I have no illusions about who Viktor Bout was. My main point is that he could be up for parole in a couple of years anyway. He’s no longer, I don’t think, going to be able to function in the world he helped create at that time. And Brittney, as a gay woman, well-identified, being held in a society where at least the upper echelons are extremely anti-gay, anti-LGBTQ community. So that’s a significant risk, and if you can get her out without causing the rest of the world significant damage, it should be considered. I don’t think it’s that Viktor Bout did anything like Brittney did. She clearly has done nothing remotely comparable.

Just as aside concerning Bob Rathbun. Anyone replacing Ernie, especially under those circumstances were bound to fail. Bob did some play by play for the Tidewater Tides in Norfolk and also some basketball (ODU?)and football while we were there. He worked at the same station as my wife. I worked MaryBeth (Bob's wife) briefly doing traffic in Norfolk. They were both very ambitious in their careers. Detroit can be a tough town to acclimate to if you are an "outsider". One of MaryBeth's parents also became ill and died during their time here. From what I read she was not happy in Detroit. Bob has been doing Atlanta Hawks games for the last 25 plus years. His resume also shows him doing some Braves games for about 10 years. He's had a very good career. Detroit was not a good fit for either broadcaster.

If I recall stories that I've read in the past, wasn't there a "beloved" sportscaster at WJR involved as well?

I was just reading about Whelan's background. Not exactly stellar. A court martial conviction related to larceny while in the Marines. His police resume in Michigan seems a bit sketchy as well. His arrest in Moscow seems a bit fishy as well. He was leading a wedding party tour group, then skipped the wedding to go sight seeing?Taking it all with the usual grain of salt since Wikipedia is my main source. Not supporting Putin here, but there seems to be more to what may be happening than Brittany having a bit of pot.

There needs to be a limit to the number of times a player can take advantage of the. Portal. J T Daniels is moving on to his fourth school. That should be a red flag to any reputable program about the player. His quest for a pro career will only net him a handful if jerseys

Especially with the supposed change in the ball. As an aside, have you seen this story....3 different balls were supposedly used last season https://www.foxnews.com/sports/study-shows-mlb-used-three-different-baseballs-in-2022-after-admitting-two-were-used-last-season
