Hockey was a niche sport around here (especially near Roanoke and Norfolk, Va Beach in the '70s). The Eastern Hockey League team in Roanoke was a decent draw, when the league and it's successor folded not as much. I think it was more because it basically the only game in town outside of college football and basketball. Minor league baseball still has some appeal in the Valley as well.

That's most of us here from Richmond east. Not much snow but the Ice Storm Monday shut things down for a couple of days. My wife pulled the car across the street to try to gets some solar thawing. Back yard is frozen solid and the dog can't find anyplace to go in the sub 30 degreev temperatures.

One of the things I've read is that Rathbun's wife had a tough time adjusting to the area and what was floating around at the time. I worked with MB for a short time in Virginia and can understand why it wasn't a fit (including the distance from her family). Georgia is a better fit for them, MB has been running a successful dog rescue program for several years now.
