Very true. I was doing a bit of ruminating the past couple of days. This past weekend was a celebration of The Marquis de Lafayette's visit to the US in 1824-25. 100 years ago Saturday was the anniversary of the victory at Yorktown in which he played a major role. Sunday he (or his actor/interpreter ) spoke at an event in Williamsburg, other CW actors in roles of statesmen of the period spoke about his history at times.
Part of it is living here and being exposed to the history, but I wonder what Mssrs Washington, Jefferson, Madison would think about how we've evolved in recent years.
Madison quoted Lafayette around 1784 as saying he would never have fought with the colonies if he had known they founding a land of slavery. I think the General would feel the same about the believes of many of today's so called Conservatives.
