I was skeptical that having a bunch of guys who have been in baseball for 30 plus years leading us into a rebuild and twenty first century baseball was not a good idea to begin with. I thought we needed some younger minds more open to the new technologies, sabermetrics and training methods that frankly the Tigers have fallen well behind the most of the league at. Drafting and development have been awful for decades so it didn't inspire confidence that they were the front office to turn things around. Also while I don't have numbers i believe the Tigers scouting staff is much smaller than the rest league and that is a large part of the problem as well. That probably goes back to Monahan. When Hinch was hired i thought that he would at least bring a fresh modern perspective, but not many results so far. To be fair it does take time for what new methods they may have introduced to bare fruit. They do have more interesting positional prospects than in years past so maybe we will start seeing some successes.

The Tigers HAD to have one of those shortstops and were not willing to wait the market out and get the best deal, opening up the possibility that none of them signed with Detroit. Correa didn't accept the the deal they offered, which he probably should have since no one else offered more, and wound up having to accept a lesser deal. The failure on the Tigers approach was they were basically in desperation mode and were afraid to wait the market out. You can blame that on ownership for demanding a big name signing, AA for putting a crap team on the field for 5 years and being forced into having to sign someone, or the development staff for not developing enough young talent.

Lions Draft Grades and After Draft Talk/What's Next?
Stanley70 replied to AlaskanTigersFan's topic in Detroit Lions
If they lose faith in Goff and really like one of the QB's next year I think they will do what it takes to get one. The best case of course would be that Goff is a top ten QB next season and they don't have to trade for one. If that happens they are a borderline playoff team right away. The offense is loaded if they stay healthy. There is a ton of talent on defense, just most of it is unproven or coming off injuries. The dline has 2 third rounders, 2 seconds, and a first from the last couple drafts. Plus Harris and Romeo. They will be a lot better this year. AO was a good corner and Jacobs was solid as well. We'll see what Okudah has left and what they have in Melanfonwu. They need a number one corner but they should have a bunch of decent depth guys. LB and safety need work but Barnes and Joseph have talent and may develop this year into starters. If they don't have to trade a bunch of draft picks for a QB and some of the young talent they have develops they will have the picks and cap space to add the pieces to have an above average defense as well. Barring some bad luck, or QB issues, they should be a playoff team for sure in 2024. -
Lions Draft Grades and After Draft Talk/What's Next?

Agreed. If they feel they can win with Goff, or they feel that none of the QB's coming out next year are enough of an improvement over Goff to warrant giving up the kind of draft capitol it will take, they can stand pat and wait another year. We'll find out after this year. Goff will definitely have the pieces around him to succeed. If Goff does play well does it make sense to trade for Stroud or someone else if they don't grade out as elite? -

If Holmes is sold on one of those QB's they will pay what it takes. If it takes 3 number ones they will do that. It isn't a slam dunk that those guys are are in the Trevor Lawrence area anyway. Stroud had the best group receivers in history probably and rarely had pressure, hard to get a good read on him. Bryce Young is 5'11 195 lbs, that will turn some teams off. So if the Lions are drafting in 10-15 area i would think 2 first rounders plus another pick, maybe a 2nd or 3rd would get it done. -
If the Tigers 6 years into this rebuild have to move young major leaguers to restock the farm system, it shouldn't be Avila doing the trading. I seriously doubt Avila would even consider doing it anyways. Possibly they would move guys with expiring contracts,.

Wenceel has been in West Michigan for a while and he is definitely bigger than he was a few years ago. Before this year he was rail thin and didn't have the strength to drive the ball. This year with the added muscle he is a much different hitter. He looks to be just as quick as well. We have seen guys develop power after seemingly stagnating in the minors before. I think he is legit now and will be bumped up to AA ball soon.
-
This is true. It makes the last 60 years of Lionsdom even more hard to explain. Especially the last 40 since they weren't really trying during the Russ Thomas era.
-
What i am concerned about is aside from Greene and Tork, whom have achieved nothing to date, how many long term pieces do we have? Baez and Meadows should be two more. The rest you have to question. And there aren't any prospects in minors that look like they can be productive regulars in the next year or two either. If Candelario doesn't work out it shouldn't be a big deal. But it will be if we also need a second baseman, right fielder, catcher and a DH. It will be tough to fill all of those positions for next year and compete.
-
Unless Goff really surprises this year they will be looking for a QB next year. Either in the draft or a trade for a veteran. If they don't find a deal they like they can wait another year.

I wasn't making the prediction that the Lions were going to win 10 games and go to the playoff's. It is reasonably possible if a few players step up, which is a lot different than the feeling going into the last couple of years. By my count they play 6 games against teams with winning records from last year. So if the young guys on the d-line step up, and the corners are ok i could see them surprising.
-
The only teams they are definitely worse than is Buffalo, Dallas and Green Bay. If they are healthy and aren't overly unlucky in close games they could win 9-10 games. They have a lot of talented young guys who may or may not be legit that could step up this year. I expect Goff to be functional and when they have all the pieces in place on offense it could be around a top 10 unit, even with Goff. The defense will be better just by virtue getting a bunch of guys back healthy. Add in the guys they got in the draft and they will be much better. They still have huge holes at linebacker, a young DL, and need a #1 corner so they will still be below average. Maybe it's too much kool-aid but they could make the playoffs if they hit on some of these top draft picks from the last couple of drafts.

Now Jerry Juedy is in jail. Ruggs is prison and Ridley is suspended for a year. Maybe we should have avoided Bama WR's.
-
is this season already done, we can't even score a run as the hitters make outs whilst the motown forum board pouts and the summer hasn't even begun
-
The Tigers won't be a consistent over 500 team until they start producing homegrown, cost controlled, first division position players. Supposedly they are integrating a bunch of analytics and technology in the minors that will start yielding results, but even that will take time. I'm not sure how Avila gets credit for these changes when he is about 10 years behind the rest of MLB.

AJ has had to get creative because he has a flawed roster that is somehow last in homeruns and stolen bases. And bad at defense. Grossman, Meadows, Badoo, and Reyes are all LF'ers. The middle infield reserves are below averaged defenders at SS. And the bat first bench guy in Haase is bad wherever you put him, and he is not a good hitter either.

The reason the Tigers are so bad have nothing to do to with the payroll. So you aren't even complaining about the correct problem. We are 5 years into a rebuild and we do not have a home grown prospect in the lineup that wasn't drafted #1 overall. No franchise, especially one not located in New York or Los Angeles, can compete without developing homegrown cost controlled talent.
-
I think Goff will be at a mediocre level for the next few years where they won't have to replace him, but they would like to if the correct opportunity presents itself. If Goff plays ok this year, next year they can concentrate on the back 7 on defense and depth. They should have quite a bit of cap space, more if they rework Goff's contract, and 2 first round picks. But if they can bring in a good QB Holmes has shown he will pounce.

Lions Draft Grades and After Draft Talk/What's Next?
Stanley70 replied to AlaskanTigersFan's topic in Detroit Lions
They needed a 3 technique out of this draft almost as much as they needed a linebacker. Paschal hopefully can provide that. And they are moving to a 4-3 this year which will probably not be much of a difference than the 3-4 last year when they had Nick Williams, Brockers, and McNeil on the field on first down. I'm guessing even though they are calling it a 4-3 they will still have 3 300 pounders on the field in the base package. So Paschal could play an end position in that set up depending on how they do it. -
Brisket or Dean for me. There are.still a ton of LB's, they could trade back too.
-
I think the Lions can get a decent LB and safety in free agency. Finding a game breaking WR is much more difficult. I think Williams is a fast as Hill, he we leaving SEC defensive backs in the dust. He would have been low 4.3's at least, maybe 4.2's if he ran. They should just take the BPA on defense, hopefully Brisker, Dean, or Pitre.
-
Burks ran a 4.55
-
Didn't sound like he was excited to be a Lion.
-
They needed playmakers and they have one on offense and defense now.

Yea Saints taking Willis here.
