I think there is virtually no chance the Lions don't pay Goff. The risk is just not worth it now that they are actually a superbowl contender, with him playing as well as he has.
-
You wonder what would Johnson could do with another similarly skilled QB in this offense. Like say Mac Jones or David Carr. I think Goff's accuracy and his QB processor speed would separate him from guys like that. The potential for taking a chance on a guy like that to save cap space would not be worth it. If the Lions did let Goff go and their handpicked replacemant failed it would burn up all of the fan support they have now.

The athletic had a mock draft up yesterday. Mocks are usually worthless, double so trying to predict what Holmes will do. That said they had the Lions take T'Vondre Sweat the 360 lbs DT from Texas in the first. And in the second TJ Tampa a CB.

i don't know Hooker's value, but it was a 3rd rounder last year when he was hurt. It has to be in the same range since he is healthy, though a year of the rookie contract will have elapsed.

We have edges in Paschel as a 4 tech and Houston as a 5. You can usually find an older veteran that can still get to QB at an affordalble price in free agency to rotate in. I think they need a DT that can get to the QB just as bad as help on the edge.
-
I really hope they address the CB postion in free agency or a big trade. CB's taken at the bottom of the first can take a while to develop unless you get lucky. I'd still take one if they find a guy that they like though.

When you look how many great players teams like the Braves and Blue Jays have signed it's unbelievable that the Tigers have produced so few. You'd think they would have lucked into a few. They would have been far better off to just identify the best player and try to outbid everyone else for him. It should have been pretty clear to the FO that they were unable to develope those guys.

Michigan spent the entire season playing with a 6 man box to prepare for the OSU passing attack. And they still came out as the number one defense in CFB. They should be ready for Washington. Wallace held up pretty good yesterday and the OSU game plus the safeties are experienced. Hopefully they can get after Penix like they did to Bama.

The questionable part in drafting Carter wasn't year one, it was year two and year three. Like Rueben Foster. The Lions weren't the only team to pass on him.

Week Six: Detroit Lions (4-1) @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1)
Stanley70 replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
Goff is a legit top tier QB now. I didn't believe he could reach this level of play because QB's with his physical limitiations usually have a lower ceiling. Tom Brady's and Drew Brees are pretty rare. Even moreso in today's NFL. He processes plays in the middle of the field as well as any QB, plus he makes very few mistakes and knows when to give up on the play. His greatest strength is his accuracy however. I'm sure Campbell and Ben unlocked some of that but it is obviously difficult to to just teach those things. -
I just think Holmes and Campbell rated Carter lower due to his not being enough of a knee cap biter. And maybe he will get into some trouble once he has a full offseason to himself. That said i wanted him too. I still think DT is a big need. I wouldn't be surprised to see them address it at the trade deadline.

Week Three: Atlanta Falcons (2-0) @ Detroit Lions (1-1)

This game will be a limus test for the defense. Atlanta has a bad passing offense, if they get torched again with zero pass rush it is time to panic. -
Week Two: Seattle Seahawks (0-1) @ Detroit Lions (1-0)
Stanley70 replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
I saw that both of Seattle's starting OT's were injured yesterday. Not sure of their status for next week. -
DJ Chark is out for a while with a hamstring injury in Carolina. I'll admit i was one of those that thought he should have been brought back but his constant short term injuries went into Holmes' and Campbells reasoning to shop elsewhere.
-
I think the Lions will be looking to add a player or two after cuts next week. They could be looking at OT, pretty much every one they have now beyond Decker and Sewell is replacement level. At WR there are still a few free agents unsigned including Kenny Galaday lol. Julio Jones is another. And they may look for a fourth DT if they don't think Levi can cut it.
-
then he should bring back more in trade value.

it seems like the Tigers have had tons of these types over the years. guys with tons of raw power and tools only to be undone by the inability to square a baseball up. I'm sure every organization has a bunch of guys that fit that description, but I can't remember any panning out for us.

I was all set to add Xfinity streaming service until i noticed that it is a 1 year commitment with early cancellation fees. Oh well, You Tube TV again.

Sounds like a RB from the 1970's.

This may be what MCS saw. Just a stupid proposal. https://www.si.com/nfl/buccaneers/news/proposed-trade-sends-buccaneers-star-linebacker-to-detroit-lions
