  1. Aaah, you're right... I was thinking we could move on after the 2022 season but that's buying out the last two years, whatever that guaranteed amount is... Not the current contract runs out after 2022... Nix that. Not interested in a contract extension beyond 2024. Interested in getting his successor at some point... although I don't see a rush/ need to do that in next year's draft either... but if the opportunity avails itself... sure, do it.
  2. That's also why I think the team holds onto Harold, Candy, Reyes, etc... Until they get pushed out the door, they should still be on the team as placeholders, at the very least. When a better option presents itself... then you move on from these guys. Just my opinion.
  3. One person is saying what, exactly?
  4. As a 4th or 5th OF'er, sure, why not...? Actually, I can answer that too... I've lost faith in him. He's been given enough chances... I'm looking elsewhere at this point... But getting back to the "rich" comment... so you think it's "rich" that I don't believe Melendez is worth trading Greene or Tork for him? Well then kindly explain your logic on why we should trade Greene or Tork for Melendez. I'd be interested in hearing your reasoning.
  5. That looks like a Christmas lawn ornament. All the rage these days... Not certain about a Lions QB as Christmas or a very "inspiring" ornament but... Enjoy!!!
  6. In addition... I think Goff may rehabilitate his image enough this year that he could also be a part of that trade package... No, he's not Tom Brady. But given a properly built team surrounded by a good O-Line/ playmakers... he can win. So he could be traded, along with the commensurate number of 1st round picks, to get our guy... our "Stafford" (funny to type that one out...!). It would have to be the right team, but it's at least an option. If it's for a #1 draft pick or similar, to get a young QB, I'd rather keep him as a mentor though... My guess, the Lions sign him to a 3-4 year extension before mid-season... and we go from there. But... just guessing...
  7. I wasn't following the contract issue... No, I would definitely wait until the offseason to consider that. No to the draft choices/ trade. Like I said... hadn't been paying attention on contract status... I don't know... adding a 1st round QB/ CB/ DT/ LB (pick two if there are no trades) leaves me very much wanting to spend that money on Smith next year, and not a 1st round pick. We load up in the draft on other positions, and sign the best LB'er with... money. I think that would be a huge, major plus for our playoff chances... including winning in the playoffs... I would do it.
  8. Momentous date in history... Lions version.
  9. Actually... that was a game 2 post(s), not in game 1. Aaaand.... The flipside is... that we keep our ammunition (draft picks), don't trade for Smith, and try to draft/ develop our own Roquan Smith (maybe with a successful 2nd round pick next year?! ... ducks).
  10. I wanted to start this 10 days ago, after the first game... But was just a bit busy and didn't take the time. I've been watching the Lions (looking good!), but haven't taken the time to post, just been lurking in here. I want to start a regular season thread because I don't want some good ideas/ themes to get lost in the game threads... and figure this is the better type of thread for all those good ideas to be in one spot... That being said... I caught something in the Game 1 thread that caught my eye... and I wanted to open (reopen) a discussion on that as my first topic. The comments were concerning using our two 1st round picks next year on CB and DL, with a follow-up comment of "just want to get a good LB'er"... or something along those lines. So... Are we ready to revisit the Roquan Smith discussion? Is he still available? At the trade deadline? Should we make a play for him? What would be the cost? I'm thinking this is a legit discussion that should be had... especially if we win a few more games... then Holmes/ Campbell/ etal have to give this some serious thought...
  11. Which means we should sell him at his lowest valuation point? Because he will never do any better than that?
  12. Also... At no point did I say the Tigers MUST trade for Melendez or the Royals MUST trade him to us... So please don't attack this like "what a ridiculous idea". The idea is NOT that we MUST trade for Melendez... but rather... I would love Harris to keep his eye out there and be able to pick up similar types of players, whomever they may be. I think he has that ability when we are talking about picking up waiver claim guys and sifting through players to see what sticks. He's made a 100 trades with the Giants sifting through guys... and if it isn't Melendez, maybe he can find similar production by picking up someone similar but who has fallen "under-the-radar". That's the only reason I mentioned him... was that that would be the type of guy that Harris could "uncover". And... if the Royals were actually desperate for pitching to the point they would be happy with Turnbull plus Dingler (I don't know that they are, probably not...), then fine, do it.
  13. Like I said... A minor league contract next year with a ST invite. If he makes an MLB roster, a 40-man move can be made then... Barnhart might get the same too next year...
  14. A guy who hits a .721 OPS, or an .800 OPS in the minors...? Yeah, no thanks.
  15. No one is saying for free. But the bottom line to me is production. Nice player... but he ain't all that either.
  16. Why does every guy that we might have an interest in going to cost Greene + Tork +6 other prospects because all our Tigers are total crap and every other player from another team is pure gold. And then I'll here "just being realistic". No, that's not realistic at all. So... I have an idea... how about whatever trade is proposed, a comp trade or two is offered as evidence that the trade proposal is realistic. I think there's a new baseball trade proposal tool out there too, that has valuations for minor leaguers as well... might help us out a bit. So if I propose two top 10 1st rounders with less than 1 year experience plus 4 complimentary prospects for a young Miggy Cabrera... I can go find a comp trade... Or use this trade simulator to check: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trade-simulator/ On Kreidler/ Candelario for Peraza/ Donaldson (suggested trade): per the trade simulator, we'd get 3.8 in value (Donaldson is a minus 19 so there's not only the deuche, but also at the end of career/ contract performing badly component). Versus the Yankees getting 6.2 in trade value. Candy doesn't have much value. But this trade is probably realistic enough to get done. Volpe BTW has a trade value of 52.6 versus Peraza's 22.8. I'm not certain how these are calc'd but I'm assuming they are related to prospect rankings etc... So I would just guess... if the Yankees are feeling the same way, we could get Peraza, not Volpe in this trade. On Melendez for Tork or Greene or similar: Melendez has a 26.2 value (??? Wow! What?!)... and Greene has a value of 70.3, ok, got it now, Tork a value of 33.3 (selling low, I would refuse to trade him until he fixes himself first...). Obviously the Tigers would never make a trade like that for him. Similar matchups per the simulator: Turnbull (I would certainly trade him) and Manning (nope) have similar trading grades, if the Royals were desperate for pitching and would consider trading Melendez for a starter. Or... a couple lower level prospects in Dingler and Graham add up to his value. This really says that there is value in waiting for a prospect to get a couple years in MLB to establish real value or they have to do some hot hitting in the minors to create that value (which Dingler & Graham have not done yet...).
  17. Melendez was a 2nd round pick who hit .237 in the minors with an .800 OPS. He's a LH'ed platoon catcher hitting .224 in the majors with a .721 OPS. Can you explain to me how that gets an ask of Greene or Tork or similar ilk?
  18. Yeah... That's exactly the out-of-the-box thinking I'd like to see from Harris...
  19. I didn't see anyone that was Miggy-like to go after (close to FA, big star, small-market team has made the decision that he will be too expensive for them...); where we might be able to put together a package that could get us that player. The closest guys I could find I guess, would be: Corbin Burnes, Brewers (would love to put him at the top of our rotation...!) Willy Adames, Brewers (funny name, there...) Randy Arozarena, Rays (not exactly that close to FA... but a nice RH'ed OF bat that would go well with all our LH'ed OF bats...) MJ Melendez, catcher, Royals (not close to FA and only an ok bat, nothing special... but he's LH'ed and might be a good match in a Tigers catching tandem) Marlins have a bunch of pitchers if we wanted to look there: Sandy Alcantara, Eddie Cabrera, Pablo Lopez, Jesus Luzardo... The other thing out-of-the-box I'm hoping Harris can uncover is a guy in AA or AAA blocked from getting playing time in MLB, or a guy stuck to the bench & not getting enough of a chance. Sort of like how the Royals nabbed Drew Waters (not that he's done well enough in MLB but it's only his rook year...). And how we traded away Suarez (and now Paredes).
  20. Minor league deal seems more amenable. He'd play at AA or AAA though, not low-A.
  21. Is he obtainable? I wouldn't know that or not... But also... I'm thinking that's highly not likely as the Angels will do everything possible to keep him long term. Just guessing. I don't think they are hurting for money... and I could see them offering to buy out arbitration years in a huge contract. Just thinking out loud...
  22. I thought I had answered this already but I don't see my post... I guess it either "disappeared" or I was just imagining things... But, anyways... Yeah... I get that... trolling the waiver wire and churning through guys trying to see what sticks is perfectly fine by me... And I saw the references to the Giants doing exactly that... I'm still thinking, or hoping... he finds an unconventional method to also bring in some very high level talent as I had pointed out. But yeah, not mutually exclusive.
  23. He's also buying himself some time as... The mobilization, and training/ equipping/ etc... will take several months... I don't think they can whip together battalions all that quickly at this point...
