Correct. Prior to 1790 they were part of a Polish-Lithuanian Empire (not I believe as a co-equal but at least with some autonomy and dignity rather than being raped as Stalin did to them). Prior to that they were an Independent Nation, prior to that, they WERE the Rus empire (loose term based on the day and age) based in Kiev; and Moscow didn't even exist. From the first Viking settlers in the late 800's AD until 1790 (900 years of history), they were either Independent, or controlled all of the territory surrounding them. But that doesn't mean anything because Russia defeated the Polish-Lithuanian Empire and took control of Ukrainian territory in 1790. Putin... go F yourself.

Yeah, The word-usage of "tanking" has become abusive and no longer has any realistic meaning anymore. If a team loses more games than it wins nowadays it's "tanking". I'm sick of all the contempt heaped upon any organization that is legitimately trying to rebuild.

I don't know about that.. maybe? I've never hear of that though. What I do know is that the St. Louis Cardinals (Branch Rickey) had basically developed a modern farm system ahead of any other team and boat-loaded their minor league teams with signed prospects that no one else had thought to put under direct contract to his major league team. Every one before that had tried to buy out a contract from independent minor league teams (they were ALL independent... until Branch Rickey came along...); and of course the Yankees could buy almost any minor leaguer they wanted to so... In order of fairness to all other teams, the draft was instituted and all (most) minor league teams were bough out by major league teams, creating our modern minor leagues. I don't know about reducing competition/ money to minor league players... it may have had that effect on the best minor leaguers but I don't believe that for 99% of them...

If you've changed the draft order for teams, that began in order of a mathematical record, in favor of a random "lottery"... The draft order has inherently been distorted.

It'll break more strongly across regional lines. East of the Dnieper River (mix of ethnic Russians and Ukrainians) will be more closely OK with Russia, West of the Dnieper are ethnic Ukrainians dead-set against Russia... Probably 80-90% against.

Yeah but on the season as a whole he is... Not a -25 like Leddy Is a net positive +2 on the +/- (only Staal is better at +9, everyone else is worse). Not earth shattering... but like Sloth is saying (I'll summarize): there's just enough improvement there to notice...

Russia wants Ukraine wiped off the map. Or as much as they can do successfully do that. Russia has no interest in a successful Ukrainian Democracy right next door. And Putin believes Ukraine should be a part of Russia, even if forcefully annexed. And while Russia is legitimately upset that NATO could be also parked at their doorstep (if Ukraine were ever successfully able to gain entry... which is not looking likely for at least the next 10 years btw...); Russia is using their "negotiating position" on NATO and NATO's refusal to change their modus operandi as an excuse to invade and kill Ukrainians. And their Democracy. The conflict is not tied to Ukrainians not wanting to roll over for Russia... but... yes, Ukrainians want nothing to do with Russia... that much is absolutely true.
