2025 Detroit Tigers General Discussion Thread
lordstanley replied to IdahoBert's topic in Detroit Tigers
I'm a bit surprised so many people on MotownForums have dated. Apparently chicks dig the Tiger talk! -
I’ve attended two games in Colorado. One, in October 1976, was Atlanta Flames @ Colorado Rockies. About 3000 people in attendance, including Krazy George banging on a drum. https://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/afm-vs-clr/1976/10/27/1976020085 The second was in the 1999 playoffs. Still at McMorran Arena. Two-time defending Cup champions Red Wings won a decisive shutout to take 2-0 series lead and seemed to be in total control. Saw Clod Lemieux leaving in his exotic sports car after the game. Shockingly, that was the Wings’ last win of the season. https://www.hockey-reference.com/boxscores/199905090COL.html

In 1988 I was dating a girl and about a month in we’re flipping through a photo album. Her with her parents, her at her high school grad, her running a 5k.. next page, oh yeah, her in a bikini sitting on the lap of some dude in a jean jacket with her arms around her in a lawn chair on a beach in North Carolina at sunset. It was John Mellencamp, lol. -

I saw an older dude wearing a navy blue Tigers' warmup jersey with Zumaya on the back in the check-out line of an IGA grocery store in downtown Vancouver about 10 years ago. Turns out it was his dad. -
I liked this feature on Jazz Chisholm from the Atlantic. Baseball needs players with personality and attitude. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6230899/2025/03/26/jazz-chisholm-yankees-individual-boone/ When Chisholm arrived in the big leagues in 2020, he brought 20 custom pairs of cleats that he bought and designed himself. They displayed his passions, from Oreo cookies, to the anime series “Black Clover,” and even the video game, “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.” Marlins infielder Miguel Rojas did not see artistry. Rojas saw a flashy rookie who needed to be put in his place. That meant taking a pair of those custom cleats and cutting them up with scissors. That meant ruining another pair of shoes by filling them with milk. ----------------------------------------------------------------- “The unwritten rules of baseball are White,” he said of the sport’s set of arbitrary standards, many rooted in a time before integration. “And I always broke the unwritten rules of baseball.” “Nobody would ever cut up my cleats or throw my things away if I were White,” Chisholm said. “I’ll tell you right now, if this was a White boy’s stuff, you weren’t gonna cut that sh– up because if a White boy goes and complains, now everybody’s f—ed. I go and complain and it’s not that big of a deal. It’s, ‘Let’s try and find a solution for this.’ But if a White boy goes and complains, nah, f— that.” ----------------------------------------------------------------- Aaron Boone danced along to a song from the 1980s — the Yankees manager couldn’t remember which — but Chisholm immediately noticed. Already, things felt different. This was two weeks after the Yankees traded for him in a deadline deal last season, not long after several clubs made it clear that they were “completely out” on acquiring the infielder because of his strong personality. “Watch, I’m about to go to the plate right now and hit a homer,” Chisholm promised his new manager. “I’m gonna come back and do that little dance.” Chisholm followed through. After stepping into the batter’s box late in the first game of an August doubleheader against the Texas Rangers, Chisholm launched a 416-foot blast into the Yankees’ bullpen. Before shaking hands with teammates in the dugout, Chisholm pointed at Boone and performed the same step routine his manager did an inning before. It sent Boone into hysterics. Months later, the memory of the incident still cracked him up. “That’s why I appreciate him so much,” Chisholm said. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Chisholm would be the first to tell you that he spends too much time online caring about what nameless, faceless people say on social media. --------------------------------------------------------------- Chisholm named eight different players he hung out with away from the park last season, including the team’s ace. “Gerrit Cole might be White, but he could pass any day,” Chisholm said. “Gerrit Cole is 1,000 percent invited to the barbecue.” ---------------------------------------------------------------

Tanana is also deeply religious and grew close to Ernie Harwell through that, if I recall correctly. -
Not to mention the entertainment value. One playoff series, even in a losing effort, typically has as much excitement as the rest of the regular season combined. The Tigers making the playoffs last year and winning the wild card round and hosting two playoff games had value and was exciting, even if they weren't legit contenders to get past the Yankees let alone the Dodgers. We know the Pistons can't compete with Boston or Cleveland, but they'll make the playoffs and should give the Knicks or the Pacers a challenge, and that's enough to make their season better than the Wings'. At least last year the Wings' final half-dozen games or so were a playoff atmosphere with some last-minute heroics. This year might not get that.

But doesn't the removal of the strip affect Comerica's chances of hosting the Cricket World Cup some day? -
Austin Watson scores in back to back games, lol. 4-2 Avs, 3 minutes to go.

Had just come here to post it. -
Habs look to be on the way to a loss in St. Louis, so the window has opened a crack for the Wings. But Wings trail 2-1 after 1.
-
Compher gives the Wings a 1-0 lead in Denver. Hard to expect much from the back end of a back to back.

Same reason I’d like to see a Lions alternate of at least half gold. Look more like a lion. Never see any black and blue lions in the wild. -
A short write-up in today's Vancouver Sun on former Wing Pius Suter, who scored his 21st goal of the season last night. No regrets with the Wings letting him go, but he's been decent for the Canucks @$1.6mm/year. https://vancouversun.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/canucks-4-new-jersey-devils-3-so-points-gained-points-made-with-gutsy-comeback-effort/wcm/4960666b-64d0-4a42-bd5a-ef79a21b2e09 Suter becoming super shooter Smart and responsible have always been calling cards for the pending unrestricted free agent. A knock on the Swiss centre is he isn’t the fastest pivot, but he lets the puck do the work by getting into scoring areas. He struck again in the first period on a play that said everything about poise and positioning. When Marcus Pettersson worked his way down the left way in the offensive zone, he spotted Suter finding a soft area in the slot. And with one quick motion, he took the feed and whipped over the stick side shoulder of Jacob Markstrom for his career-high 21st goal. Suter’s value continues to rise, which makes you wonder about next season. He’s 28 and a glue guy and penalty kill staple. His expiring two-year deal and US$1.6 million salary cap hit is a bargain. At this stage of his career, he’s probably looking for salary and term. Maybe less of a bump and more security here? “Smart guy, systems guy,” said Tocchet. “He’s like another assistant coach for us.”

Concussion?
-
I was actually interested in the Wings looking at Chyrchrun this summer. Not at $9 million though.
-
ENG for DeBrincat. Wings have never lost in Utah.
-
Edvinsson knuckles one in. 3-1!
-
And have lost their goalie and are somehow leading. Are the Wings going to tease us and keep faint hopes alive by actually winning this game?
-
3 shots, 2 goals. Kasper gives Wings the 2-1 lead.
-
-
Elmer with his 4th of the season. Four more than I thought he would score with the big club this year.

I’m hoping to go to the Tigers-Mariners matinee on Wednesday April 2. I haven’t been to a game at T-Mobile Park when the roof is closed. -

Fine on TV or of course on radio. But I'd hate to go to one game at Comerica all season and have it be the City Connects instead of the classic home whites with the olde English D. -

Since it's a General thread, I'm posting a YouTube clip of a commercial I remember well from Tigers broadcasts growing up.
