I mean, there is a credible chance he helped fund the entire reason why we have a mask debate.... so I mean, take that for what it's worth.

https://nypost.com/2024/06/02/opinion/nih-scientists-made-710m-in-royalties-from-drug-makers-a-fact-they-tried-to-hide/ Even if you fully support the NIH and Fauci, this has to be a little bit concerning, right?

same as you, but it looks like i'm a little older: 96 - Dole 00 - Bush

Finished season 2 of the The Jinx. Instead of just following the trial which I think anyone that watched the Jinx likely followed a bit, they went into those around Durst and questions just how culpable they should be.

https://nypost.com/2024/05/16/us-news/nih-director-admits-taxpayers-funded-gain-of-function-research-in-wuhan-four-years-after-covid-pandemic-began/ Ridiculous answer, but more truthful then they've been in the past.

It would be nice if folks like Rina Shaw took the time to outline the changes and voice dissent, rather than lie. https://www.wric.com/news/politics/capitol-connection/disabled-veterans-urge-youngkin-to-use-line-item-veto-on-budget-language-affecting-college-tuition-waiver-program/ Apparently students fitting this could simply provide the required information and get this benefit before. Now they will be required to complete a FAFSA and if they are given financial aid, Virginia will only be on the hook for the balance of it.

I disagree with the premise that he's learned that perfectly. Trump had a keen eye for identifying things that everyone was upset with and reshaping the party around him to accept it. But then he got into power, wanted to keep it, and I don't think he has that keen eye anymore. Abortion is about the only thing you could argue he understands can hurt him, yet while he tries to play the states rights line, he allows to much talk about contraceptives and federal bans from those close to him. IMO, because he is more focused on revenge that actually winning. Add in the fact what he's done to the GOP. Helped start (and finish) civil wars within the state GOP for Michigan and Arizona, two swing states that need a healthy state level GOP to help drive voters to the polls. (Guess you could argue Michigan's sane party took it back, but it's a flaming pile of dog crap still. Loyalty is more important than turning out the base for him. In fact for the previous base that wasn't 'loyal' to him, he couldn't care less about them.

I definitely think some Canadians care, just not with the passion with their own team. Probably similar to what I see with myself and a lot of folks I know with the Big Ten. I actively root against OSU (Maple Leafs) and if MSU or UofM aren't involved, I hope to see the Big Ten team (every other Canadian team) win, but I'm not losing any sleep if it doesn't happen.

Nothing confusing about that. The part I'm confused by is those saying Butker said that stuff to women. You yourself pointed out your wife had snide remarks directed towards her. Maybe more folks accepting of Butkers views (not necessarily following them though) could have saved your wife those comments. I heard him say his wife didn't truly understand her vocation until she was a wife and mother. I was never career minded, I wanted to work and do well at it, but I didn't have the drive to go up the management chain. I did want to be a father, but once I was, it was clear to me what I cared about more and what I wanted to be known for more, a good father or an accomplished worker? I strive for both, but on my death bed I would like to think most people would only care about one of those.

If only there were people that could use there platform to point out there is nothing wrong with that path if you choose to do it.

Did something publicly happen with someone that said this recently? Links or it didn't happen.... and I mean links with the wording that explicitly says their only job is to procreate and cook. I have read Butkers speech if that's what you are referring to. I did take exception with some parts of it, parts in which I view him as a Catholic that likes the conservative push we're seeing with that church in the US of which the pope is actually pushing back on. There was a part where he mentioned that women, the type of women that would choose to go to a catholic school, may be looking more forward to starting a family then pushing for a c-level position. My wife was and is very proud of her degree and she was working towards that when we met. Apparently because I'm a horrible conservative, we also talked about our hopes for our lives outside of work before we got married. In hindsight, I guess I should have only looked at my wife in the terms of the money and titles she could attain and just hope she would eventually want kids like I wanted. Obviously I'm part of the patriarchy. That was later re-enforced when after our 1st child was born, she wanted to quit work and spend more time raising our child. I encouraged it and when she felt horrible about the lack of financial support from her, I tried to make sure she understood I'd do anything to help her have her wish. At the time I felt I was being supportive, but I'm woke now and realize I was telling her she should just stay home, cook, and procreate. It was difficult on her as she was raised in a family of female's that worked and she had a new world out there that said women should be pushing for more power in the workplace. It was not an easy decision for her and a lot of that was based on outside pressures to be a successful women. She eventually went back to work, but raised two wonderful kids. Even if she didn't go back to work, she was successful in my eyes.

Ahh yes, I forgot how Sean Hannity got so big over his FoxNews coverage of the 68 Olympics. Both sides have done it for as long as their have been at least two sides. Stop pretending it only happens when it offends you.

Ever watch a White House press briefing? If you miss it, you can go back and watch them on youtube and I think c-span usually has the most recent one up.

Stock market rising when Trump is in power - It means nothing, average American's aren't getting the advantage of that rising stock market, there are many other factors. Stock market rising when Biden is in power - It's the ultimate measurement, you shouldn't discuss anything else, this should be the only focus.

Not the best thing to say, but.... and hear me out......have you seen MTG?
-
It was absolutely trading barbs, but it wasn't equal either. Ridiculous that they allow MTG to get away with her comments, funniest part is the chairman didn't even realize the sarcasm that Crocket used. Screw term limits, what about a law that you can't run for congress (or president) if you're over 65 on your first day.

I've put too much money into my 2009 Traverse (put about 4-5 thousand miles a year on it over the past 5 years) and my wife's 2015 Equinox in the last year, but my tires on both cars are great still, so I feel like I have to try and get a little more out of them both, lol. My son's girlfriend was bitching about the car her dad gave her and how it makes some noises. Wanted to tell her i'd trade it even up for my car but held my tongue.

Ahh yes, if you agree with a celebrity, they are awesome, if you don't, they should shut the **** up.

Being one of the lone conservatives on this forum, i'm a huge fan of the military. So pro military that even back in my "working with Ann Arbor people" I had a huge argument over Audioslave's "doesn't remind me" video as they claimed it was some anti war crap, but we all know Cornell was paid by the CIA to help drum up how cool it is to serve. That said, and please take no offense Tigerholic, but this thread reminded me of a reddit thread my BIL sent me: https://www.reddit.com/r/justdependathings/ I'm trying to get my SIL to change her behavior so she can be like this. So far she's not going for it, but she needs to realize her husband walks on water and therefore she shouldn't be on the same level as anyone else she deals with on a daily basis.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2024/05/14/president-biden-new-tariffs-on-china-economy/73684903007/ More tariffs, but without even knowing much about them, I know they are good because Biden says they are. Unlike the Trump tariffs which were enacted without any thought, even though Biden reviewed and determined it was exactly what he would have done and kept them in place. Must of have God's work to guide the Plinko chips to the correct tariffs when Trump picked them so haphazardly. Seriously though, looks like he's trying to give US producers some more time to compete with cheap EV's. I see the argument. Definitely something the new GOP wouldn't be against either. Guessing GM and Ford pushed for this. Only concern is I could see the progressives getting upset as it'll slow the rate of electric vehicles into our markets. I suspect it won't register much though.

Pretty sad that I'm pleasantly surprised to learn this today.

No way I could do it justice. From someone that I think is a bit of a PBS'er type of guy, I'd think you'd love a 10-20 minute spoken word story. 🙂 TL/DR, He finally met John Prine after years of mutual friends, scares him, and it ends with front row seats.

I listen to the Drew Lane Show (former Drew and Mike Podcast) and they have a guy that does Top Ten "X" where X is some specific type of song, like Top Ten songs with a false ending. Seeing the Old 97's and the first thought I had was "what about a top ten bands that everyone knows, but never made it big" They have been such a solid band for so long, had songs in movies, a handful of top 10's. Unrelated, it's usually the Friday show (comes out Thursday night) and you can find a timestamp for when it starts in the show notes if you don't care to listen to the show but want to listen to this segment. Often it leads to some great music discussions.

Do you actually believe Ukraine is in a better spot right now then Russia? And when I say a better spot, I'm referring to Russia and Ukraine's ultimate goal of controlling land. Short term (next several years, regardless if Trump or Biden is the next president), Ukraine is ****ed. Putin doesn't care about his losses as long as he holds and increases land. Long term this is good for the US, because Russia is in an untenable situation in that it's reworked its economy for war, so it needs war. If it wins in Ukraine, it's screwed. But slowly killing off both Ukrainians and themselves, they can and are more than willing to do that for years. The longer they do that though, the worse their economy will be when it ends. The longer this lasts the better for the US, but also the worse for Ukraine. But let's keep up with the ultra nationalism for Ukraine (which we hate for our own country) and keep claiming that they just want to fight, so what else can we do but keep on supplying them.
