https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2020/10/12/gretchen-whitmer-emergency-orders-struck-down/5970811002/ https://www.foley.com/en/insights/publications/2020/10/michigan-supreme-court-limits-powers-governor Later the legislature went and repealed the 1945 law, leaving us with at least the now more defined 1975 law. Judging how inept Nessell has been as her AG, i'm willing to agree that Whitmer didn't have the intention of being a tyrant, but for the folks that were out of work due to her unlawful orders and weren't getting any unemployment because she couldn't properly administer that division, I understand why some may think differently. Just as I understand those that question DeSantis as he chose to try and thread the needle of being a standout within the GOP, without going against Trump.
-
This could be said of anyone you disagree with politically. In fact the Michigan supreme court voted that Whitmer overstepped her powers. She won't speak to local journalists unless they agree to ask her questions in advance as well. I honestly don't know enough about him outside the fact that when I see horrible things attributed to him, I often learn later that are exaggerated, but are there politicians that aren't elevated on the narcissist scale?

I just don't see how anyone can watch DeSantis and really think he's equivalent to Trump. Does he have political views 1/2 the country doesn't like, absolutely, but seriously I don't see any Trump like qualities in his personality.
-
I can't believe there is a debate on if DeSantis or Trump would be worse for this country. The argument that DeSantis is a smarter Trump thus worse for the country, in the words of Biden, "C'mon man". With Trump, you get a 100% chance that he will try to find a way to stay in power or ensure Eric or Ivanka take over, legally be damned. He wasn't close to doing it last time, no matter how bad we all agree 1/6 was, but we're still just learning how close he was at breaking with the 'adults in the room' leading up to 1/6. I doubt he makes the mistake of allowing any adults in the room next time.
-
We'd be much better off with DeSantis than we were with Trump. He is much smarter than Trump though, and has shown a willingness to follow the crazies if it helps him. So don't take that first statement as an endorsement.

He's an oddball. When he was on the council, he loved to say 'no' to everything. Additionally he demanded the mayor to be more transparent with everything. Probably the only thing he would have said yes to was transparent bathroom stalls that the mayor could use. As Mayor, anyone that questions him is just trying to make a name for themselves or trying to steal from the city. He does work a ton, responded to me over the weekend to a small complaint I had which I assumed my email would just hit a secretary in his office. But he definitely feels no one else can do what he can do and therefore he shouldn't be questioned.

He is a democrat and has voiced support for more progressive candidates, like Bernie Sanders. I regrettably voted for him once as well.

To satisfy Pfife, I think you could argue that Detroiters in 2016 were coming off seeing a republican Governor that actually was working with the city to try and help it out (got them through bankruptcy for example). As 1984 mentioned above about republicans, they are going to vote republican. Same thing with Dems, so while percentage wise, those that voted for Hillary, there might be an argument that many stayed home because they weren't that mad at the GOP because of Snyder. Goes towards my previous point as well, if Dems actually tried to talk/address issues seen in Rural areas, maybe they don't pick up a ton of votes, but they may also lower the amount of people that are intent on voting against them. Much easier to point to Wyoming as an example of everything that is wrong with voting in this country and why the GOP 'steals' national elections occasionally.

Oh trust me, i'm not blaming everyone else. I certainly admit that I was not an 'abortion' voter as even though I disagreed with the republican platform and even leaned towards the 'bad law' complaint for RvW. I simply never thought it would be overturned. Similar to the social platform of the GOP. I didn't like it, but I felt society as a whole was moving in the right direction and would overrun the religious component of the GOP. Now, I can't vote based on what I think are the best policies for the issues that I feel are most important to how we run our government. I'll still give local republicans a chance if I see they are doing good work (probably just Miller), but i'm straight ticket dem at this point on bigger races. I just wished the dem party focused on real solutions instead of complaining about how bad the other party is. I mean, RvW wouldn't be this big of an issue if they would have just codified it, which even Manchin showed support for.

No, it's not fair to try and play the game the way it was designed. The much better political play is not to do anything about it, except complain.

I really wonder if this part of her testimony was a ploy to try and lure some additional testimony. Hutchinson's testimony can be truthful (that's what she heard) while the situation itself never happened, or at least to that level. If true, I feel like the Trumpers took the bait. Trump will push to have anyone that he feels can negate that comment and push them to testify, at that point, it's a free for all.
-
I missed the first hour, watching some of that now, but this one is quite damning. And as mentioned above, while not as sexy, the obstruction comments at the end of the hearing might be the biggest news of all.

He should run as a republican.

https://www.mediaite.com/tv/jim-obergefell-justice-thomas-should-remember-the-right-to-interracial-marriage-is-only-6-years-older-than-roe/ Because hypocrisy always exists, this is my guess of what happens over the next 18 months with SCOTUS. Someone brings this interracial case up. This time though, instead of using the same argument, Thomas votes against it. Roberts, still pissed, gives no legal reasoning and just votes to overturn it. Thomas and his wife are no longer married, the Justice department forces them to testify against each other in a case that further implicates Trump. Thomas resigns and Biden gets a SCOTUS pick. Roberts pushes to hear cases that bring both abortion and interracial marriage up again and they revert both decisions. I'm like 80-85% certain that's what is going to happen.

i'm just going to bow out, as I mentioned initially, overall I agreed with Oblong in regards to this hearing. It has been refreshing to see.
-
It certainly wasn't anything crazy. It was just a day or two ago where I caught him talking for 5 minutes or so. To me it felt like he was trolling the Trump style folks that are now saying 1/6 wasn't a big deal rather than adding any value. I didn't think much of it at the time, expected out of Schiff IMO. I then listened to the Bullwark podcast which is another never Trumper conservative guy and he quipped the same thing which validated it to me. My guess is those that aren't conservative Never Trumpers probably don't feel the same way as me.
-
Schiff did some grandstanding the other day. But yes, overall it has been very well done. It's different from most as well though as it's more of a production and less of a hearing. Much of the investigation is being done behind the curtain and then these hearings are the presentation to the people.

I'm leaning towards Terry Hobbs.

I know you guys will scream that i'm 'both sides'ing', but while Rusty Bowers is an example of a legitimate issue, and while agreed it's a bigger issue with the GOP today, this forum is a pretty good example that the other side has some similar tendencies. I have acknowledged I voted for Biden and Whitmer, I have consistently said that at this point they have my vote again. But, I have criticized them, thus I love Trump and i'm everything you hate. And again, i'm not saying the majority of you are whacked out like a solid contingent of the GOP right now. I openly admit it's not an apples to apples comparison. Related, but unrelated... I love true crime and i've been following the WM3 case. Tomorrow there is a hearing about using current DNA technology to test evidence. In following details on twitter I came across a women that has spent the last week or two telling her followers that the 3 folks that were originally found guilty were definitely guilty. For those that don't know about this case, note that they are out of prison now due to an agreement with the state AND they are the ones pushing for more DNA tests. It's the state, that allowed them take an Alford plea to get out of jail, that is fighting them. Imagine being guilty of a murder, getting lucky enough to find a way out of prison, and fighting to test evidence which if you did it, could solidify the case against you for everyone that has fought for you over the years. But anyway, this women has been steadfast in this position. I look back at her tweets and prior to a few weeks ago, I never saw anything WM3 related. But what did I see, Johnny Depp. She is absolutely convinced Johnny Depp beat the crap out of Amber Heard 24/7. Months worth of anti Depp tweets. And one significant one to me where she learned at some point that Johnny Depp supported the WM3 in their attempt for a retrial. Thus, if Johnny Depp supports the WM3, since he's a horrible person, obviously that means the WM3 are guilty. Wow, took me way to long to get to this point and i'm not sure how to conclude this. Probably would be best not to post after getting home from the local summer festivals beer tent.

Agreed, but i'd make that push.
-
They need to get Pence in there in primetime.
-
Did they need Republican votes to pass it? Is there evidence of price gouging actually going on? Seems to me a lot of people are complaining about election laws, without any proof of election issues and dems are pretty keen on fighting against those. Aren't there already price gouging laws at state/local level?
-
I did see a meme that stated if we all just stayed home for two weeks, we could flatten the gas curve.
-
I don't disagree with you, but your response is what i'd expect a pre-Trump GOP member say if a GOP president was in charge. Basically a 'throw my hands up' combined with a 'the free market will fix itself' as they tried to push blame away from their POTUS. In the past, the Dem party has always been more so inclined to use laws/regulations to push industries into a direction they felt was good for the country. When events resulted in a major issue, you've seen both parties do it. Instead all i'm hearing is 'well, this just underlines the importance of moving to electric cars and renewables.'
