  1. I like the opt outs. It's good for the players and the team. The players should be motivated to play well. If they opt out, the team has options. In Baez' case they could give him a qualifying offer or try to trade him before the deadline but he can block a trade to 10 teams. Rodriguez has already received a qualifying offer from the Red Sox but he doesn't have any no trade clauses. If they don't opt out, it doesn't mean they are bad. They might enjoy playing in Detroit. Baez and Rodriguez are young enough and talented. The contracts seem reasonable compared to what others have received so I think they will be worth the money.
  2. Is this realistic for next year? That's 37.5 WAR. A good starter, better bullpen and better DH could push them to contend. Barnhart 1 Torkelson 2.5 Schoop 2 Baez 3 Candelario 3 Baddoo 2.5 Greene 2 Grossman 2 Cabrera -1 Haase 1 Hill .5 H. Castro .5 Rodriguez 3 Mize 2 Skubal 2.5 Manning 1.5 5th starter 1 Alexander 1 Fulmer 1.5 Cisnero 1 Soto 1 Funkhouser .5 Lange .5 Foley .5 Jiminez .5 Closer? 1
  3. Gotta love people who make your job easier and that's exactly what Baez and Schoop will do for Trammell. He will probably focus most of his attention on young Torkelson. The defense up the middle was a big problem last year. It looks much improved now.
  4. Baez for probably $200 million less plus he plays every day, very good signing. I don't mind the opt out. If he takes it, they get a pick in the draft.
  5. Some guy named Shohei Ohtani. Ask Jack Morris about him.
  6. I'd like to see another starter signed. A reliever or two would be nice. How about extending Candelario for the next few years? The Baez contract certainly allows more flexibility to add more players.
  7. I watched the videos. Thank you. Very happy with Baez. I'm looking forward to many arrows shot rounding second base the next couple years. The baserunning and defense look great too. He looks like he will fit right in with this team's play style.
  8. Never bring a knife to a gun fight. Never bring fiscal responsibility to a drunken sailor spending spree?
  9. MLB owners making it rain like drunken sailors at a strip club.
  10. $25 million per year. 3 years shy of what they gave Arod.
  11. Mlbtraderumors had estimated 6 years $138 million. They thought 6 years might be a stretch since he's 31.
  12. Rangers close to signing Semien for 7 years. Seven!
  13. It sucks that the Mets can do something stupid like sign a guy for 10 years and $341 million. Now everyone expects to get that deal. Doesn't matter if they play every game or are consistent year after year. That's the price tag now. That doesn't mean the Tigers are going to be as stupid as the Mets. I think we see other teams are also reluctant to make that mistake as well. The pitching market has moved fairly quickly while everyone waits to see what Correa will get.
  14. I think Correa is still number one on Detroit's list but they don't want to bid against themselves either.
  15. Yes but just to confuse things he could sign a two year contract right now and that would nullify his arbitration in 2023 but who's realistically going to do that after the past two seasons of mediocrity? He should have made the adjustments the Tigers wanted him to make but now his best bet is to sign for one year and hope he performs like his first two seasons.
  16. No they don't have to go to arbitration this year because he's a free agent now. If they keep him next year he would be eligible for his third year of arbitration but he will probably end up in the same situation again. Nobody will want to pay for arbitration again and he will be released, go unclaimed and become a free agent. This season he can sign for whatever contract he wants but what are teams realistically going to offer?
  17. Yes but nobody wanted to pay for his second year of arbitration so I doubt anyone will want to pay for his third year. He could have done himself a big favor and listened to the team and batted right handed, making the necessary adjustments to improve his game. Then he might be making three million now but he didn't and he's probably going to have to sign for one million somewhere.
  18. Nobody claimed him this year, so nobody wanted to go to arbitration with him. He would probably get released again after next season unless the team thought he was worth the third year of arbitration (probably not).
  19. A team can sign him to a major league deal this year and then he would be under their control for his final year of arbitration as well. Example: Tony Sipp was released by the Padres in May 2014 when he had between four and five years of Major League service time. The left-hander subsequently signed a guaranteed Major League contract with the Astros that ran through the end of the '14 campaign. Because he finished the season with less than six years of Major League service time, Sipp was eligible for salary arbitration as opposed to free agency. Sipp qualified as a free agent following the 2015 season and re-signed with the Astros on a three-year deal.
  20. "You will join us or we will crush your hopes and dreams. Verlander didn't listen, Kate will dump him momentarily." - AJ Hinch at brunch with Carlos Correa.
  21. Whatever they want. Nobody wants to get hit by a flying elbow.
  22. I can see Haase getting some playing time in spring training at first base. He and Miggy can handle first until Torkelson is called up. I wouldn't give up a year of control over our top two prospects.
  23. AA quoted as saying they are keeping an eye on the outfield market as well.
  24. Red Sox have offered him a multi year contract. No details on mlbtraderumors yet
  25. Something just happened! Tigers outright Carlton.
