De Jesus, Hutchison, or El. Rodriguez.

Probably Hutchison.  He's 31 and has no future.

Cutting Hutchinson for Keuchel really doesn’t solve the issue.  All things equal, I’d rather run Hutchinson out there.

They have about four or five guys that would have been better off pitching in Toledo this year, but what is preferred and what is reality often doesn't mix.

The reality is that Garrett Hill and Elvin Rodriguez are already on the 40 man roster and, to varying degrees, could factor into the future of this ballclub. In order to bring Keuchel on, you have to DFA someone off the 40 man roster.... is it worth giving someone the boot for Keuchel, particularly when you have Manning, Rogers and Turnbull who are on 60 Day IL and will require roster maneuvering if they come back this year.

I just don't see it as being worth it, particularly for a starter carrying a 9 ERA.

Yeah, the 40-man roster is real and going to be a challenge moving forward.

I can understand that thought process. You know he is probably good for 5IP each time he goes out and what you get back for him probably wouldn't be worth much.

If he doesn’t yield anything of worth in return, you keep him.  We need as many innings we can get out of him, in the event of more injuries or innings limits to our young guys.

    That's stupid.

Pass on a pitching prospect who can help, when we've seen how pitchers can get hurt because someone won't give you an equally rated bat. Isn't that why we held on to Boyd?

My point is that we’re under no obligation to make a trade.  Moving a young pitcher like Soto for another young pitcher, unless it’s a big upgrade, doesn’t make sense.  I also believe we have a lot of good young pitching knocking on the door, so yes, I’d prefer we fill one of the 7 lineup spots next to Tork and Greene that are currently mostly a black hole.

    Take the best prospect regardless.

You thought we were good pitching wise to start the year. How is that going.

Just take the best guy don't take a lesser prospect just cause you're like I need x today.

    Or don’t make a trade.

These games are super fun to go to. They are literally sold out almost every game though and tickets are ridiculously hard to find..... Baseball can learn something here from them for sure.........

Seems odd that a pitcher playing for an independent team would still be draft eligible vs just being a free agent

One would imagine that they would want a bat, but also there may be a difference in the value of pitcher / batter that could be returned.

Put another way, it may be easier to acquire a high ranked pitcher over a high ranked hitter.

perhaps, but I'd rather pool out tradable assets for the best position player we can get (that makes sense for our roster).  if we're getting more pitching in return, I'd just assume hold on to Soto, who we control for a few more seasons.

Now obviously this is just one person's opinion but below is what Bowman said it would take to get Soto.

Chad Jennings and Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently tossed around a few names in a hypothetical trade with the Red Sox for Soto. Jennings suggested LHP Brandon Walter and RHP Wikelman Gonzalez. Bowden countered, suggesting it would take more for the Tigers to part with Soto — perhaps Walter and right-hander Brayan Bello.

Jennings may have undersold the amount and Bowden may be a little on the high side but Bello is currently ranked 44 on Pipeline.

really hope we focus on getting a bat in return, if we move any of our relievers.

Not sure this has been posted here but I feel like the kid would work well with Baez.

looks like an asshole.  But he's our little asshole now.

I am curious as to the shakeup we will see after the AS break. Usually you will see some moves happen after the ASB to move players up and down levels.

I think we’re a bit limited in what we can do.  The AS break has sometimes served as a line of demarcation, where players who had a bad first half, turn it on in the second (and vice versa).  I think we’re better off giving Schoop, Grossman, Candy and Barnhart a month to see if the break helped them.  By that time, Rogers might be ready to come back.  Kreidler could be an option at 3B if he can get some reps in Toledo.  Could also bring back Cameron or Hill, too.

He hasn't had his time at the majors yet, but getting Reese Olson for Daniel Norris is another eye opener. Very solid prospect who projects to being a major leaguer for a guy who wasn't even rostered for the Brewers postseason run last year.

The Wilson/Norris deals definitely provide hope they can get a little more than we think they can.

Cubs just cut Norris this past week—never understood why he wasn’t better.

Ever since the Royals won the WS with a dominant bullpen teams do seem to be willing to pay a little more for stud relievers at the deadline vs. other positions.

For example the Cubs gave up a top 5 overall prospect in Torres for a half of year of Chapman and we also got a good haul for Justin Wilson ourselves by getting Candelario and Paredes. I know there have been several more "overpays" for relievers but those are just two off the top of my head.

Cubs got Nick Madrigal for Craig Kimbrel.  Of course, that hasn’t worked out for either team (yet).

Here's Smith's best picks by year

    96 - Robert Fick

    97 - nobody worth squat

    98 - Jeff Weaver/Brandon Inge

    99 -  Cody Ross/Jason Frasor

    00 - Nook Logan 🙂

    01 - Ryan Raburn

Now for 2002 it's up to you whether to give credit to Smith or DD as I think most of Smith's guys were still here:

    2002 - Granderson/Zumaya

I'm only offering that up as information....

Smith also traded Cecil Fielder and Travis Fryman for Matt Drews, in two separate transactions.

Dude traded for Brad Ausmus seven different times.

I know that they were trying to go underslot, but the pick I didn't quite understand today was Jake Miller.

I know they are all lottery tickets, but outside of his relatively good K/9 and BB/9  numbers, didn't see much to suggest any chance of success.

Perhaps they are hoping to save enough with all of these college kids that they can do an over slot with a HS player tomorrow?

Kind of a meh second day, which is to be expected with their limited draft pool money. Michael in the 10th round is at least an interesting pick for a guy who is probably going under slot. The Tigers still skew more traditional rather than data focused in the draft. But, walking out of the draft with Jung and Graham was much better than I expected going in so it's been a good draft overall.

Couldn’t find much on Michael, except that he’s 24 and gives up dingers.  Any special pitches?
