One suspects some of these names may not be in the picture next year lol

agree--I see the depth chart as:  Greene > Meadows > Baddoo > Carpenter > Castro > Reyes, with the last two not looking likely.  I don't get hung up on the OF being all LH, as long as we have some balance though out the lineup, which we do with Tork, Haase, Baez, etc.

  2. I like your chart--gives a good overall perspective of the roster and potential moves.  Personally, I disagree with giving 40-man spots to the following:  Navigato, Joyce, Nieporte, Charlton, Bergner and probably, Hess too.  I don't see any of them as potential big leaguers and/or risks to get selected in the Rule 5.  I'd rather keep Elvin, Garcia and Funkhouser over any of these guys.  DeJesus could go, and I'd be more inclined to keep Cameron over Reyes, and I would tender Harold Castro a contract.  Can plug into a lot of positions, LH bat and probably would be our best pinch-hitter.

  3. we'll know very quickly after the season whether Miggy is in the plans for next year or not.  They won't cut/waive him later.  I fully suspect he will be part of the roster in 2023, unless his pride gets the best of him and he can work it our with the Tigers to get paid without playing.  I do think he will want the imminently retiring star player treatment, though, as he makes his way across the league (rocking chair gifts, etc.).

File this under a situation we can't control, so lamenting his involvement next season is probably futile.  Hopefully Harris can mitigate his roster inclusion with some creativity and Hinch can manage his playing time and ego, if that becomes an issue.  I personally think that Miggy realizes he's done, and won't be a problem/distraction in a diminished role next season.

There is only one scenario I can see under which Miguel comes back, and that is that he undergoes some off season medical treatment that could potentially help the knee. IMO, for him to try to come back without some change in his physical condition is pointless for him and impossible for the team.

I thought I had read somewhere that his knee could not be repaired surgically.

I get the impression this is a fan concept that doesn't have any foundation in anything the team is saying or doing. By the same token, that contention is not a hill I would die on either.

agree--it really is just a fairly obvious and desirable outcome for the next 5 years of Baez' contract.  Anyone who has seen the guy play SS this year recognizes he shouldn't be counted on to be there for the duration of his contract. Now go and sign the guy we should have in the first place, Mr. Harris.

Candy has shown some signs of life in the second half with a good July and September, sandwiched around an awful August.  He's probably not a solution to anything but if they can have him around in 2023 for cheap in case he figures it out again, that would be fine.

Schoop has had 2 BB, 2 singles, 2 doubles, and 2 HR in his last 28 PA....that's not good but it's a better than horrible for a short stretch.  All we need out of him is the Brandon Inge reboot version circa 2009-2010....87 and 93 OPS+, good defense, 1.3 and 1.6 WAR.  I give it a 50/50 chance.

if we don't move on from guys like this, we might end up with the same roster.  Haase, Reyes and the Castro boys could all be back as our bench (and hopefully nothing more than that).  from a starting position standpoint, the opportunity to upgrade (assumes Tork and Greene are being counted on in 1B and CF and stuck with Miggy at DH), are at 2B, 3B, C and one of the corner outfield spots.  If you bring back Candy and Schoop in a starting capacity, you are really only changing out C and one outfield spot.  I'd be fine with going with Jake Rogers and Haase at C.

Let's go get a real SS and LF.  Move Baez to 2B and keep Schoop for UT (1B/2B/3B).  bye bye, Candy.

I think you all aren't foreseeing the paradigm shift in roster building.

I think the Tigers will be scouring the waiver wire, trying to accumulate as many players as possible, and hoping a few bust out while waiting on the farm.

Players will be acquired if they are a value. The days of "We need a catcher. Let's get Tucker Barnhart, mission accomplished" are likely over.

So, dumpster diving?  Who is on the farm that we’re waiting for?  Jung, Keith, maybe Meadows?  Are you suggesting this likelihood because we have few tradable assets (which I don’t disagree with)?  That’s why I like bailing teams like the Padres and Yankees out of some shitty contracts with some of their better prospects.  Yankees SS situation, as someone previously brought up, is a prime example.

  8. Constants for next years lineup (barring any my trades):

    C-Haase, Rogers

    1B-Tork

    2B-Schoop

    SS-Baez

    CF-Greene

    DH-Cabrera

Meadows is under contract, but given his mental health challenges, can’t be counted on.

Baez could move to 2B, with Schoop moving to 3B or UT role, depending on other moves.

Would be shocked to see Candy or Barnhart brought back. Reyes and the Castro boys are less likely.  Doubt we’d count on Kreidler, Clemens, Baddoo or Carpenter to be significant contributors.

I believe Harris will focus on SS, LF and 3B, in that order.
