I just read that Boras wants 200 million for Semien. Wow. After listening to Al and Ilitch yesterday during the press conference I think we are down to Baez, Story and Taylor.
-
I am not advocating for Baez over Correa but one is demanding 10 years and the other might only require 4 or 5 and Baez is only 2 years older so Baez contract would be for years 29,30,31,32 and maybe 33. So the question is "how much more value "does Correa really represent for a much much larger commitment and opportunity cost with less $ for additional players ?

Stay Healthy Like Zimmerman ? Of course its expected but there is no way of knowing except past history.

So the "Golden Ticket " for shortstops now is Lindor's 341/10 year deal which is already looking bad after an ok 2021. So offer the following : Correa - 5/175 - Makes him the highest paid shortstop per year at 35/yr and free agent again at 32. Story - 5/150 - 30 mil per year despite questions about playing outside Coors. Free agent again at 34 Semien - 4/120 - 30 mil / yr , offer to play shortstop , and free agent again at 35 Baez - 5/125 - 25/year and free agent gain at 34 Send them all out on the same day and tell all first come first served with a time limit. No takers start looking for a trade partner and allocate the funds elsewhere and/or go hard for Chris Taylor.

So assuming Baez is 20 mil/year and provides the 265/295/450 you suggest plus solid defense and posts daily is it worth 10 million more per year and 150 million more commitment for Correa to provide 277/350/480 with solid defense and misses time ? That comes to getting on base 30 additional times per year given 600 ABs, slightly better defense, slower runner and more prone to injury for 10 mil more per year and 150 million more in total commitment. I am not arguing either way but just wondering if we aren't shopping for the same thing at Saks 5th Avenue we can get almost the same at Costco.

Seager would hit 40 bombs hitting in that park with the short right field. He has to be their # 1 target.
-
I agree with this especially if we can actually develop a shortstop during that time so that $ can then be allocated to keeping some key core players that will be nearing or at Free Agency.
-
I was always bullish on Wentz but now I'm not so sure after your post. Hope they both do well.

So we suffer through a long rebuild to suffer through covid to worry through a potential work stoppage and still no Tork and Greene opening day? Unacceptable !!

The Tigers are nearing agreement with Eduardo Rodríguez

"not who we want " in deference to Correa, Seager or Story but of course he would help us tremendously as noted in the post..power. defense and plays every day. -
I want aware of that. It's interesting. I thought "markets" were limited geographically I guess.
-
Without doing research I doubt Detroit metro is top 10 wealth wise in the USA. California alone probably has 4 or 5 greater wealth wise. I would guess closer to 20 to 25.

Mickey Lolich was a mans man...doughnuts by day and strikeouts by night. -

Javier Báez 6/130....not who we want but not drunken either ..20-20-22-22-23-23 with opt out after 2. He fits Al's budget, improves the defense, has power, prime years within contract and stays on the field. Barnhart -6 ( after new 3 year deal ) Erod 14, Baez 20 = 40mil which leaves al $ for 5mil starter and bullpen or outfielder. -
I wonder if Al is on a strict spending allowance this off season. He seems to be trying to cut some corners to have more monopoly $$. Save 2 mil on EROD, cut Boyd, Goodrum etc and maybe get Barnhardt down from 8 to 6 million by spreading out a 3 year deal. It could add up to nice bullpen arm or outfield depth. And if he did have say 30 million left to spend is it better to get Correa or Story over 10 years or say Chris Taylor AND Jon Gray over 5 ?

Zimmerman was 30 million more. -

This is a solid sign. $ for value is solid. Way better Than Zimmerman. Going for the young pitcher in their prime rather than name recognition. Solid improvement for Al who is now 2 for 2 in the off season. Fingers crossed for a good shortstop. Al seems to move quickly like DD always did which I think puts a little pressure on the player to sign. Maybe it will work for a shortstop who doesn't want to twist during the work stoppage. -
Yes I saw that and while I agree tanking needs to be addressed I think mid season trades build fan's interest for both sides..getting a veteran to win or a prospect to build upon. As for tanking is it possible to rank draft order by increased wins or increased win percentage ? Meaning the team that improves by the most victories from the year prior picks first. That is easiest done for teams that have low win totals so it still should help the lower teams but also eliminates winning 55 games for consecutive years to keep tanking/drafting low. I haven't thought it through but it might work. Use increased win percentage to break ties.

I think Baseball will start on time FWIW

Like the A’s scout in Moneyball

yes that also works.

What about offering Seager and Correa 10yr/320 million contracts paid 40/year for the first 5 years and 20/yr for the last five years and give them an opt out after 5. The player would be the highest yearly paid shortstop, have the security of a 320million contract and the option for another bite of the apple at a young age should they opt out. The Tigers get the best shortstop, pay a premium for the most productive years and then the salary reduces in half ( or most likely disappears) about the same time Tork, Greene, Mize, Scubal etc get expensive.

You make a very interesting point. Everybody assumes Carlos Correa wants to come to Detroit because of our manager but is it possible our manager does not want him at all because he did undermine him before in Houston.
-
I just read Tony Pauls top 50 free agent predictions. I don't agree with but a very few. Seems light on most and way high on others. He has a player who were offered a qualified contracts ( 18.7 mil/yr ) signing 4 year 33 million deals ? He has us with Correa, Verlander and Rondon. 2yr/50 for Verlander and 9/270 Carlos. But who knows he could be correct on most. Waiting to compare his with MLB trade rumors. I do give him credit for putting out $/yrs which isn't easy.
