  1. counterpoint: miguel cabrera. i had a friend who owned a pretty popular bar in ferndale. tigers players would be there all the time. he told me all kinds of stories about giving guys bottles of this and that. they'd pound the whole thing and then drive home. happened all the time. young, rich, and famous = party all the time.
  2. hilarious.
  3. then put the case in federal court if youre worried about getting home towned.
  4. The auto industry and its feeder industries went through a bit of a downsizing in the late 80s, early 90s. there went your tax base. remember when Suh left the Lions for the dolphins? 4.5% tax versus 0% tax is a big deal when youre making that kind of money. And youre a hockey fan, how many times in the last few years have you heard teams complain about losing free agents to low tax environments like florida or texas or vegas? tons. Detroit is not NY, Chicago, or LA where the cultural amenities, nightlife, and business opportunities outweigh tax considerations. Marginal things like taxes will hurt a destination like detroit. look, its not like detroit cant get free agents, it just has to overpay to get them or offer a championship window. Or both.
  5. so state income taxes is a big deal for some folks.
  6. fellas, every city in america has nice suburbs. detroit is not a nice city. its "fine." but it has crap weather, is not a party town, is not a destination, and has high taxes. no one is coming to detroit unless the franchise is close to a championship and is overpaying massively. i like the tigers being more of the rays than the dodgers. however, i do think they should have ponied up at the deadline this year and should have overpaid for bregman because they only have skubal for one more year.
  7. it's almost like you wrote a book about this once...
  8. hopefully that adds a little something to the competition. the international guys will try hard and the american players will blow it off.
  9. i dont think so.
  10. they needed that one. losing to wake at home would not have been good. try shooting better than 15% from 3 next time.
  11. kyrie going down really killed them too.
  12. Bye bye nico.
  13. theyre going to need defense for their inevitable play-in loss to the heat. their only legit big man is vuc and he cant defend the paint. buzelis is soooooo skinny someone is going to bully him down low. white and giddey play zero defense. patrick williams is disinterested. they can outscore you when giddey/vuc/white are hot, but they cant stop anyone who is trying. ever.
  14. after starting 5-0, the bulls have lost 4 of their last 5.
  15. first you would have to find a wizards fan. second, once you found them, the wizards fan would say "the wizards LOSE that game? yeah, i can see that for sure."
  16. i am wearing my "liberte egalite fraternite" shirt, why do you ask?
  17. this is a better win than beating philly without embiid! only duren and cade and a bunch of g league guys, on a back to back with travel, and they still pulled it out. i know the wizards are awful, but theyre still an nba team (barely, but still), and the pistons won with daniss jenkins being the key man!
  18. the only disappointing thing about this game was that no one clocked cam whitmore afterwards.
  19. this ref crew is having a very rough game.
  20. there is no "playoffs" in those sports, that's an american invention. in europe, the regular season decides the champion. if you win, you get rewarded by being in an extra competition just for champions the next year. the champions league/copa libertadores, etc is a separate competition from the domestic league. america only has one league and one competition (which devalues the regular season and essentially turns it into an exhibition before the "playoffs" which actually decide the champion). in europe, you actually get rewarded for winning the competition. and - like i said before - punished for being bad. they both have their pros and cons. but europe is much more likely to see the major clubs form a us style competition w/o relegation than america is to ever doing the euro style thing. it makes no sense foe current stakeholders in us sports to give up their guaranteed profits. europe almost did it a few years ago but the fan backlash was so great almost all the big clubs abandoned it (except madrid).
  21. you're too old for that. stop it.
  22. too many injuries to overcome tonight.
  23. why did the pistons move out of the palace?
