LOCKOUT '22: When will we see baseball again?
sabretooth replied to Motor City Sonics's topic in Detroit Tigers
I agree about baseball, fans know when to pay attention and when it's time to chat with your friends or grab something from the fridge. Soccer (at least European soccer) is just dreadful as a spectator sport to me, not exciting in the least bit, and has very little to interest the mind. Because my wife is from Spain, I have watched a fair amount of European soccer. I think if they had more liberal ball-advancement rules it might be OK to watch, at least as a mind-numbing thing on the TV while I do something else...maybe MILS is better, I don't know.- 1,851 replies

I can live with..... - pitch clocks, because the modern Jeter-ization of batting routines was getting ridiculous, and requiring pitchers to stay in for 3 batters eliminates the modern overutilization of relievers. I'm also interested in... - trying to limit the overshift, because it's reinforcing the current no-balls-in-play K-or-HR aspect of baseball which makes it more juvenile and boring IMHO. I don't like.... - the universal DH, but that battle was basically lost decades ago. I absolutely HATE.... - the extra-inning baserunner thing; it was just an abomination, and reeked of the little leagues. I am very frightened of.... - the further expansion of the playoffs seriously threatens to ruin the UNIQUE value of baseball as a marathon season, which reinforces it's un-clocked/timeless/eternal aspect. Bottom line: baseball can be rough, mean, dirty, and childish, just like any other sport, but I **really** cherish the grown-up and contemplative part of baseball, which no other sport can touch.- 1,851 replies

I think the success of soccer demonstrates that you don't have to be exciting to remain popular. Baseball can only hurt itself by trying too hard to be up-to-date. Younger people won't know that the changes have been made and won't be able to appreciate the efforts to modernize; if they were not interested in 2010 or 2020, they will still probably be disinterested in 2030 no matter what changes are made. And folks like me who see little or no benefit to the changes, and who **like** baseball's presumptive nod to preservation, feel like our perspective is laughed at for no other reason than some people like change for change's sake. Promoting modernization for baseball is a lose-lose proposition. It ain't broke....don't "fix" it.- 1,851 replies

This is the "Family Man" scenario (the Nicholas Cage movie)....he is shown a glimpse of life had he stayed home to marry Tia Leoni. If ever there was a good moment to have one of the Rams' top guys as our GM, it's now. Hopefully Sheila can give him the kind of support that he needs to move the ball downfield and SOON....not 5 years or some BS like that....they should be able to acquire a few good players this offseason, build on the last 6 games of this year, and knock on the door of .500 tihs year. Yes, THIS YEAR. -

They were missing offsides calls on both defenses throughout the game FWIW. -

Wooooow.....the game was pretty even in terms of passing and such, but Aaron Donald's pressure in the 4th Q basically nullifed the Bengal's running game advantage and the Bengal's one turnover advantage that the Bengals had (one of their two INTs, the one in the endzone, basically served as a punt touchback). -

It was the kind of call you don't like to see at that point in the game, but the Rams had another down, and on the nextd play Cupp caught a TD that was nullified by a Holding call, which you also don't like to see at that point in the game, so it basically evened out. Plus, the Bengals had a TD from Haskins that should have been overruled on the face mask but it was missed. The officiating did not decide the game IMHO. -

Yeah, as Chas indicates, baseball has the huge RS schedule which is a juicy target to swap with perhaps a big-tournament approach for more $$....that would be truly awful.- 1,851 replies

Newman was awesome in all phases....very thoughtful/ecclectic and warm. Would love to see that kind of radio host again somewhere.

Frank was a legend and FWIW I agreed completely with his politics, though he whiffed very very very badly on the Sergio/Tiger thing. I was more of a David Newman guy in terms of talk radio, miss him so much.

I totally agree with this from a moral and philosophical basis, and I would prefer if there were no DH at all. With the DH in the AL for so long it was inevitable that it would arrive in the NL. The 14 team playoff format is much worse in it's long-range impact. My fear is that most teams (especially super-cheap-arse owners like Chris I) won't ever give their teams the tools to win more than 82-85 games, so we'll bounce along in mediocrity trying to eek into the playoffs. Blech.- 1,851 replies

Awesome feeling.....the closest that Lions fans have or are likely to ever come to Super Bowl glory. Congratulations Matt Stafford! -

Yeah, a couple of the ads are funny but the rest are like watching movie previews of ad placements. -

I honestly dont give a rats pitootie what the resolution is, and I refuse to be invested in the **seeming** substance of this process, or get drawn into sides. The significance of this CBA in relation to the interests of the fans wont be known for some time afterwards. I do want to see baseball ASAP, and that is all that matters to me.- 1,851 replies

Yes there's the vicarious experience, but there's also the "WHY CAN'T YOU DO THIS LIONS???" message that Stafford's success sends, and that's a great message coming from the fans. It won't improve anything with the Lions because nothing ever does improve the Lions, but it's better than yawning at Stafford's success in LA as if it has no larger significance. -

I feel good for Stafford because he's a good guy and I like to see good guys win, and rooting for him provides a little bit of a feeling as to what it's like to root for a Super Bowl QB. And yeah, there's some f'ing warm shadenfreude in there...love for Stafford, and a big f-u Fords/Lions for not being able to turn Matt and Calvin (and Barry and the 90's Lions) into anything more than mediocre/occasional first-round-wipeout teams. If you can't feel that anger against the Lions for wasting oppo after oppo, then man you need some lessons from people like me who love to be angry at a bad team, especially a bad team that's been bad for 60 years.
