  1. The list series is here if someone wants to do the work. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/layoffs-havent-hindered-playoff-teams-historically/
  2. Evidence that long layoffs may not hurt teams:
  3. Or they could barnstorm for 8 months periodically having some tournaments. That would be cool.
  4. I could support that. I prefer the long season and don't need them to have any tournaments, but I know most fans like tournaments. playing 162 games just to start all over again with a bunch of short series just seems insane to me though.
  5. He was terrible, but I don't know that what they have now is any better.
  6. I liked it better the old way, but it's not coming back. I do not have a problem with the post-season being separate and distinct from the regular season. The problem is I don't think they are regarded separately. The post-season tournament is regarded as far more important with the winner determining the league champion and the regular season virtually being ignored as far as team accomplishments. I would like the teams with the best records in the regular season to be rewarded more for the regular season records than the post-season tournament. I do understand that the post-season would make no money if it was regarded as a footnote to the regular season, but I don't have to like it. On the other hand, regular season individual accomplishments get more recognition than post-season accomplishments. It's a strange disconnect. That part makes me happy, because I am probably more interested in individual than team accomplishments.
  7. I don't think playing the lower seeded team is a big enough advantage in baseball.
  8. It will go to 16 teams, but there needs to be some incentive in winning the division. Maybe, they'll have more home games for the division winners. I don't really care anymore. I enjoy the regular season more and haven't even watched the playoffs yet this year.
  9. Eisenreich's comeback was a success story. I remember when he played for the crazy Phillies teams of the 90s, Kruk told him: "For the fitrst time in your life, you're the most normal person on the team".
  10. So, try not to be too good during the season! It's OK though because because pretty soon there will be 16 teams in the playoffs.
  11. I don't think he would qualify since he was charged with felonies. "The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States. They shall in all Cases, except Treason, Felony and Breach of the Peace, be privileged from Arrest during their Attendance at the Session of their respective Houses, and in going to and returning from the same; and for any Speech or Debate in either House, they shall not be questioned in any other Place."
  12. I don't get why people think Trump would want to be Speaker of the House. How does that help him? He is not interested in helping Republicans. He is only interested in himself and I don't believe being Speaker would help him advance his status or wealth. I guess I could see him doing it for a few weeks just to stir up trouble and keep himself in the news, but he'd get bored really quick.
  13. The only sources I have are MotownForums posters. You can decide if they are reliable or not.
  14. Totally Tigers and Heyman are not the most reliable combo! However, I have seen elsewhere (I believe Morosi) thst the Tigers have checked in on Yamamoto.
  15. I think it was a reference to having a different line-up every day.
  16. Bad umpire calls are annoying when they happen, but I always get over them pretty quickly. They have a tough job with no glory, only blame. I'd rather blame players or really just circumstances. Or even better, blame the manager or GM. Just like in real life!
  17. The play I most remember from that game was Polanco not making the play in extra innings. It was a double play ball that would have ended the game. The announcer raised his voice in anticipation of the game ending play. The only question was whether it would be a DP or just a forceout. Then he didn't make the play at all. It wasn't an error, but is was a play he makes all the time. The Inge play was big too, but it impacted me less because the way the game was going, they probably would have blown it in the bottom of the inning anyway.
  18. My view on politicians is we don't agree with THEM. They pretend to agree with US, so they can get votes. That is true of both Republicans and Democrats.
  19. Yes, B-ref has JAWS. They calculate WAR over the best seven years of a player's career (WAR7) and then then take the average of WAR and WAR7 to get JAWS. Here are the results for first basemen: https://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/jaws_1B.shtml It may surprise some people that Cabrera ranks better on WAR than WAR7.
  20. Probably the same. Pitchers are expected to have shorter careers and are usually remembered for their peaks. Also, I think it's understood that you can't compare pitcher counting stats across eras because pitcher usage has changed so much. At least, it should be understood. Cabrera's last 7 years have zero effect on his peak dominance. Cabrera was a little more dominant at his peak than Thome. He was not more dominant than Ramirez and Thomas though. I would say they were pretty similar. They also have little effect on his all-time ranking for me, but that is the problem. They could have enhanced his status and they didn't. Cabrera was awesome. I don't even know what we arguing about. I am just not going to say he was one of five greatest hitters ever because of four arbitrary categories designed to eliminate guys like Ruth and Williams.
  21. Maybe he would have been Hank Aaron instead of Manny Ramirez.
  22. Stats are not arbitrary when you use them to try to fairly answer questions. Using them to try to make your favorite player look better than Ted Williams and Hank Aaron is a misuse of stats. He is absolutely a Hall of Famer. He's just not in the sane class of guys like Hank Aaron and Ted Williams. He's Manny Ramirez (who statistically meets Hall of Fame standards) and Frank Thomas. Nothing wrong with that. I disagree that he'll look better over time. I think he'll look worse over time because his WAR total is not very high for a hitter of his caliber and that is more and more becoming the standard. I think he's probably a little better than his career WAR suggests, but he's still not Aaron or Williams.
