All you need to beat Trump in a debate is "baseline bad". However, Biden was a complete disaster in the early going and there was no way to overcome that first impression. Trump sucked in the debate too, but he sucked in ways that aren't going to influence the average voter. He never answers any questions or gives any solutions. It's just whining and insults and claims about The United States being a ****hole country under Biden. However, he spoke loudly and confidently which is all that's going to matter to his followers and a lot of undecideds.

I heard that Scott Harris had turned the organization into a player development machine. That is not a sarcastic knock against Harris. It's just that fans overrate their team's prospects all the time and there is a lot of luck involved in drafting and development. Even if you do things right. it's really hard to build a core

I just learned on facebook that Walter Partlo passed away yesterday. This is really sad and shocking to anyone who knew him. He was still young and seemingly vibrant and I believe it was totally unexpected. For those who didn't know him, he was a long time poster here. He had quite a life - Marines, PhD, professor, good family man and all around great guy.

I don't think Biden looks old at all. He SOUNDS old.

There are milions of people who just don't pay attention. We keep on making the mistake that people are as aware of what's going on in politics as posters in this thread. Most people don't know **** about politics. And chances are they didn't watch the debate.

He is only getting better because he is triggering Trump into his usual insanity.

I agree, but Trump wouldn't respond appropriately to a national emergency on any day. He is more likely to be the national emergency.

There is NO way I would ever support Trump in any way, but Biden actually does sound like a senile old man tonight. He is getting worse.

If they are considered equally bad, then I'll still go with Avila. Avila at least seemed like a pleasant guy (perhaps being too open) whereas Smith came off as one of those people who seemed smug for no reason at all.

Skubal is fantastic. The only question is his durability. He has an extensive injury historyand still hasn't been good for a full season yet. I am however not interested in seeing him traded. It always depends on who they can get in return, but trading established players for prospects at the deadline seems to backfire more often than it works.

I get that you have decided that Avila can not get any credit for any successes from players currently on the team and that any player that succeeds will be because of something Harris did. However, Randy Smith was horrible. The only thing that saved him was Gonzalez not wanting anything to do with Detroit and refusing that stupid contract.

Doing bad in the playoffs would be better than never getting even close to the playoffs!

Smith was worse. Year after year after year of terrible draft picks and pointless trades. I think Avila had a plan and stuck with it, but ws bad at executing it. Smith didn't even have a plan.

It struck me as odd when I saw the line too. Thanks for confirming it. The other thing is you wouldn't expect it from Mize who had never struck out more than 7 batters in a game previously.

yeah, It is definitely noticeable. They have gone from Avila talking too much at times to not giving any info at all. I don't think that works well when your audience is baseball fans emotionally invested in the team.

Right, K rate only measures rate of contact. It dosn't say anything about power or hard contact. I am not sure that batting average measures anything in particular. It is just familiar stat from our childhood. There are other measures which tell us more about specific batting skills than batting average. If anything, batting average is a mish mash of both contact and type of contact and you can't isolate any skill by just looking at batting average.

I think k rate measures contact skill better than batting average and it also stabilizes faster. I'd never toss any stat, but batting average doesn't have a lot of use for me unless we are talking about runners on base splits.

I rarely look at batting average anymore, but his k% does look good. His BB%, ISO and OPS all look terrible. I don't think it's a matter of re-orienting expectations. The results have just been bad. I am encouraged that his recent results may indicate that he is making adjustments.
