  1. Do they let you use the Rolls or is that just for Bert?
  2. I think it's done mostly for money. It's not because they have discovered a better way of line-up construction. Versatile utility players and platoon players cost less money and allow teams to stay within. a smaller budget There are some platoons that actually do work very well, but the more moving parts you have on your roster, the more things that can go wrong.
  3. One day is enough for most people. You could hang around longer than that because it's a beautiful and relaxing town, but to see the museum and explore the town a little bit, one day should be enough.
  4. Very good points which illustrate the potential problem with too much mixing and matching defensively. I know this is the overall tendency in baseball now and it probably helps offensively, but it may have unintended consequences on defense.
  5. FanGraphs says they have a 1% chance to make the playoffs. That is better than the Yankees and Cardinals. I think the fact that we are even having this "what if" discussion is why teams should always put a reasonably competitive team on the field.
  6. In Massachusetts, we only include height. We are too woke to ask for weight.
  7. The Tigers are scouting top Japanese pitcher Yoshinoba Yamamoto.
  8. Wow, I was not expecting that kind of finish tonight!
  9. As it should... But I am biased because I was a first baseman for many years as a kid!
  10. FP% makes a little more sense at 1B than other positions (where it's not very useful), but there is not much variation in FP% for first basemen. They all are between 99.1% and 99.9%.
  11. Torkelson leads the majors in scoops by a lot: https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/major-league?pos=all&stats=fld&lg=all&qual=y&type=0&month=0&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=&enddate=&season1=2023&season=2023&sortcol=15&sortdir=desc&pagenum=1 What this doesn't show is exactly how many opportunities he had to make scoops but failed, although I assume those would show up as errors much of the time. What it probably does show is that he had a lot of opportunities and was successful many times.
  12. I always assumed Bergman was a good teammate since he wasn't that good, but had a pretty long career. He was good enough to be a useful role player, but not good enough to start. Those kinds of players are not always kept around long.
  13. This is the best one I have seen yet.
  14. Marketing doesn't have to make sense. You just need one of every 100 people in your audience to be an idiot.
  15. There are more failure stories than success stories though because the MLB is hard. If you keep thinking every minor leaguer with an .800 OPS is going to have success in the majors you are going to experience a lot of disappointment.
  16. Mike Ivie was kind of a sad story. He was the first pick of the draft in 1970 and had a hard time dealing with the pressure. He had some good years, but then his career was derailed by mental health issues and that kind of thing was not well tolerated back in those days.
  17. He is already selling "never surrender" tee shirts with his mug shot on it. It's all about money. Also, he is back on twitter. I checked to make sure he is still blocked, since I heard they were unblocking people. He is still blocked.
  18. More than 5 or 6 for me. All the answers are immediately obvious when I look at them though. I'd study ahead of time, but probably 20 minutes would be enough.
  19. I got the Honus Wagner bobblehead in Pittsburgh too. August 12, 2014.
  20. Other than a few games of Meadows, none of them have on field production in the majors.. So, it's either statistical probabilities or hopes and dreams at this point. I certainly hope all four of them become good MLB starters, but I don't think that is likely.
  21. I think we can reasonably expect one of them to become a solid MLB regular next year. If two of them achieve that status, it would be a big success. Any more than that is very improbable.
