Very high level, like one of the top position prospects in the minors. I don't think teams would offer that but that was my interpretation of the the hypothetical question.
Carpenter is not a good defender, but the relatively small sample defensive numbers do not suggest he is terrible compared to other corner outfielders. More like average. Anyway, I don't really understand why they would trade him... unless some team is offereing Chet Lemon.
I am not a fan of cliches like 'Hitting slumps. Defense is daily.' However, it depends on how good a hitter and which position. If it's a corner outfielder or first baseman, then you want to emphasize offense more. If it's a shortstop or catcher, then defense becomes more important.
Pitching and defense often work together, so it's hard to tell. It's probably less important than it used to be with all the strikeouts now, but it still matters.
Meadows is reportedly a better defender which might make a difference in how he's perceived if he struggles offensively. I still think Baddoo should have spent more time in the minors, but you can't go back in time. He'll probably have a hard time getting another extended shot in the majors.
Agreed on the small sample size. Right-handed hitters have much less of a problem with splits than left-handed hitters, so I am not anticipating thst will continue to be an issue going forward.
Why do conservatives take pride in seeing a big company fail and why are politicians going after this company? I thought they were supposed to be pro business and free market.. Budweiser marketed their product using a trans theme. It didn't work and they lost money. EVERYTHING a big company does is about profit. This was not a political decision.
If he has reverse splits, that gives me more confidence he could play offensively everyday since RHH seem to to have better chance of learning how to hit RHP than LHH have of learning how to hit LHP. The problem for him, of course, will be finding a position.
I think managers in general, while not totally irrelevant have less relevancy than traditionally believed. I think bullpen management is one of the only areas where they can win or lose a few games over the course of the season. The Tigers bullpens have mostly over achieved during Hinch's tenure. I think a lot of that credit goes to Fetter though.
Not all the no brainer draft picks in baseball work out...
I am not saying he was a great GM. I am just saying that there will likely be a good number of Avila players on the team when they start winning more.
