  1. I think they helped him by extending his prime. I bet Cabrera would have had a longer prime if he played in that era.
  2. Rapid expansion is not talked about enough. Anyway, I believe Bonds' numbers were boosted by PEDs (along with hundreds of other players) but he was already one of the all-time greats before anyone even started talking about steroids.
  3. You can't just throw out stats. Stats are not a reward for good morals and ethics, They are a record of the game's history. Hundreds of hitters and pitchers used PEDs. It's not even practical to try to re-adjust all the stats to penalize the hundreds of hitters and pitchers who used steroids, amphetamines, etc. You can say that you think Aaron was a better home run hitter, but Bonds is the all-time home run leader. If I was going to select the best home run hitter, it wouldn't be either of them. I still think that's Ruth.
  4. I have not read any of pig snuggler's posts in a long time. Has he developed any original ideas or engaged in a conversation with anyone yet? If not, why even respond
  5. Catchers are undrerepresented in the Hall of Fame in part because they don't have as many plate appearances as players at other positions.
  6. That is possible. I think something similar might have happened to Whitaker and Trammell (initially).
  7. MLB.com says that Barry Bonds is the leader. Some say it is Josh Gibson.
  8. It seems like if there is any question about whether a prospect can stay at a position, they usually wind up moving down the spectrum more often than not. However, you are right that Greene is an example of someone who did not.
  9. The draft is always BPA regardless of your organization's current players. Also, my impression of Meadows is that he is the type of prospect you want to watch, but not one you pencil into the future starting lineup.
  10. Even more so if you live in Massachusetts.
  11. I think it just means .985 is a really high sluggng percentage. Amateur stats mean very little, but one can still marvel at the magnitude of a stat regardless of the relevance.
  12. That is a legit concern. The only good thing that has been done during the Manfred years and they are going to **** it up.
  13. That sounds more fun as I have become very Tigers-centric.
  14. Immaculate grid pisses me off, but I keep on playing every day! I feel like I should do better and know I would have done better when I was younger. I get some 7s and 8's, but can't quite get to 9 even though I always feel like I am on the verge.
  15. Hodges is a good comp. He was considered a god, but that because he played for the over rated 50s Dodgers.
  16. It doesn't really fit with McGonigle though.
  17. He didn't hit for a high batting average other than the one big year, so he wasn't recognized as a top hitter. I think he would have been valued more in today's game.
  18. If the Tigers are going to be the kind of organization that is not willing to sign a couple of good players, then it's going to be really depressing to be a fan. I'd rather not think about that.
  19. I was just looking back at the Nashua Rosters. They had an AA team from 1983-1986. I saw future major leaguers like Devon White and Bobby Bonilla, but the guy I remember the most was Reggieeeee WEST! He had a good season for them, but never made it to the majors. I also remember Biiiiiiiip Roberts. The cool thing about Holman Stadium is that it was the home of the first racially intregrated team of the 20th century. Their roster included Roy Campanella and Don Newcombe. They later had some independent teams (which is when I saw the Cansecos), but could not support a modern affiliated team.
  20. I loved when Nashua had a AA team (first the Angels and then the Pirates) and I went frequently. So, I wouldn't be surprised if we were at one of the same games. Those were some of my best ballpark experieces ever. It was before minor league games were popular, so the crowds were not large and it was all baseball. A minor league game was not a circus with non-stop music and sounds and all the silliness between innings. Some of that stuff is fun but they over do it.
  21. My favorite is Ed Irwin, but I'll let Boom tell the story.
