  1. Yes, I think they would have made the Phillies trade. They still needed depth which Vierling provided and Maton was supposed to provide. I also think if they knew how good Candelario would be this year, they would have kept him (and then traded him at the deadline). They gambled and lost (but saved some money!)
  2. The Tigers are 25th in the majors in RA/G, so run preventon has also been a problem. Their bullpen has bailed them out a lot, but their run prevention would be a lot better if Skubal, Mize, Manning, Turnbull were healthy and living up to their potential which is pretty substantial collectively. It's probably unreasonable to expect all of them to succeed next year, but I think that is their only possible route to a quick turn around. Their offense is terrible and I don't think any amount of mixing and matching will make a big difference. They need better players which means young hitters will have to develop or they'll need to acquire position players outside the organization. I am curious which depth players you think they need to tap into more?
  3. If the Central Division remains week, it doesn't have take three or more years. If (and I know it's a big if) the Tigers get their pitching healthy, they can contend sooner than that.
  4. That was Mike Laga. Pittaro is the best rookie he has seen in 15 years. Carl Willis is the next Rollie Fingers Barbaro Garbey is another Roberto Clemente
  5. Most of what management says is BS. Same as it ever was. I am more interested in how the players perform. The Randy Smith era felt more hopeless than this one.
  6. The other guy was tigersrok. You don't tell Bert to **** off.
  7. Who were those two posters back in the old days who posted something negative every five seconds? Cats Meow and can't remember the other name (the guy that told Bert to **** off)? **** that was almost 20 years ago. I've been here too long.
  8. Yes, we'll hear those complaints. I think his approach is a little different from Avila so far, but it remains to be seen how successful he'll be. I am trying to think positive about him until proven otherwise.
  9. When it comes to high level talent, they don't have much of either. I also prefer the outfielders, but the top three are reportedly special talents. If that's the case, I wouldn't want them to drop to another tier to get a hitter.
  10. I don't get that ad. Was that an ad favoring Trump or DeSantis? It was confusing.
  11. I have no faith at all. It is certainly possible that the right well trained civilian could happen to be at the wrong place at the right time, but the odds are heavily against it.
  12. Can Skenes hit? https://www.on3.com/college/lsu-tigers/news/paul-skenes-reveals-whether-plans-hit-and-pitch-mlb/
  13. Should someone go to prison for being a coward or freezing during in a moment of terrorism? I don't believe so. He should probably lose his job though.
  14. There are very few players where I think about service time and if someome is good enough where I would think about it then they should be signing him long term at some point. So, I guess I never care about service time. Of course, that doesn't mean they don't care about it.
  15. They are winning at the same pace I predicted at the beginning of the season and have done it with a lot of injuries. So, I'd say they are overachieving (mostly due to the bullpen).
  16. With so many pitchers coming and going I had kind of forgotten how impressive Skubal was last year. It looks like he hasn't missed a beat.
  17. But if you don't have all the right pieces, it won't work all season even if guys stay healthy.
  18. Ideally, you don't use 32 year-old Jody Mercer at all because he was a poor fielder at that point. There have been platoons in every era since I have been watching the game. They are harder to do now because so many roster spots are used for relievers but, as you pointed out, teams are still using them. I don't know if I like an overabundance of platooning. If someone is a good fielder, they shouldn't necessarily be platooned because their defense may override the value of the offensive platoon. An old timer example would be Lou Whitaker who never hit well against LHP but his defensive value in his prime was more important than an offensive platoon advantage. Later in his career, when his defense slipped, it made sense to platoon him and they did.
  19. I don't think are going to do that fully. I believe they are going to have a challenge system like the instant replays already in place which would be a shame.
  20. Mike Pence has made it work in Indiana.
  21. He is Trump with no personality at all. It doesn't get much worse than that.
  22. eyeso was Shelton's word for what you described in the post. It was a combination of the ISO stat and good eye.
