AOC is pretty much the only person in congress that can genuinely connect to young adults, a demographic that doesn't always vote in large numbers. They need her. Even Bill James likes her. 😄

So, if he gets who everybody else wanted, he gets no credit. If he get a late round guy who succeeds, he gets no credit. No matter who he picks, he gets no credit. Chris Fetter was signed under Avila too, but I am retty sure you have already explained why he gets no credit for that. I still say those were all successes for Avila. He was also a bad GM. Those two things can happen at the same time.

Biden was horrible in the debate and it wasn't an isolated incident. Being able to speak extemporaneously is a very important skill in politics especially when campaigning and he no longer has that skill. I don't really agree with your suggestion that he is in serious mental decline. He may be, but the inability to talk smoothly would not suggest that. Many of us would pobably perform just as poorly in a public debate. We, of course, are not running for President. Trump was just as bad in the debate as he was unable to answer any of the questions and all he did was deliver his set of canned talking points which often had nothing to do with the questions and were mostly false. He said it all loudly and confidently though, so I guess that makes it OK.

Interesting assessment of Biden from a surprising source. James is not just being a knee jerk lefty by the way. In fact, he has been critical of Biden before. I don't think he's a righty either. He is all over the map.

Going to minor league games is definitely more fun for me. I am not emotionally invested in the teams and don't care who wins, but the environment is usually more enjoyable.

This needs to be done. A lot of people don't understand how bad of a person Trump is because they don't pay attention. His character should be attacked daily, systematically and unapologetically. And don't sweep it under the rug because a new scandal pops up.

You can't moderate Trump. He's just going to do what he wants anyway. It was Biden's job to do that. The old Biden would have grilled him.

It's worth something. They need to know if he learned anything and whether he is part of their future. They came into the season with three young players with something to prove (Tork, Keith, meadows) and so far they have proved little.

Yeah, that was Biden's job and that was the most frustrating part of the "debate". He started doing it later, but it was too little too late.

By having a plan, I man he was committed to building from within. He tore everything down and tried to collect young players and never waivered. I did not like his plan and he was bad at it, but I saw that he had a plan. I don't follow the behind the scenes management stuff as much as you do, but I know they were not good at analytics. Harris and his team appear to be far superior at analytics and that is what I've always wanted from the Tigers. I am excited about that. What I don't know is whether they will be good at team building. My excitement will be tempered until I see evidence that they have that skill.

I don't think anyone here with the possible exception of Echoes admires Avila. I think Avila was a poor GM. It's just that any time someone points out a positive acquisition by Avila - such as Skubal, Greene, Carpenter or Olson - it gets shot down. It seems that Avila is hated so much that people won't give him credit for the few good players he produced. It's possible for someone to be terrible at the job, but still do some good things.

It's the same thing as players. Everything was different a long time ago. You can compare Avila to his contemporaries and Smith to his contemporaries and decide which one was worse. What I see was that Avila and his team had a plan, but were bad at executing it. Smith didn't even seem to have a plan. Regardless, the Tigers did very poorly under both of them. I hope they do better under Harris. They couldn't do much worse.
