  1. I want them to have at least one good veteran pitcher next year. If extending him is ther best way to get one, then I have no problem with it. Right now, his remaining contract is 3 years/48 million which would likely be a bargain in the open market. 4 years/68 million would be reasonable. There are some good free agents (maybe including Rodriguez) available which might be better and also might be more costly. I hope they get one of them.
  2. He was pretty good for the first three months this year. Now he sucks again.
  3. I remember that well. I laughed because he knew the emory board was in there and he deliberately tossed it pretending that he had no idea it was in there. His excuse was that he needed to file his finger nails in order to throw the knuckleball properly.
  4. I feel like Martinez never got as much appreciation as he deserved. The top Tigers in OPS+ in at at least 1,500 PA: Cobb 171 Greenberg 161 Heilmann 149 JD Martinez 147 Crawford 145 Cabrera 141 Cash 139 Tettleton 135 Cullenbine 135 Kaline 134 https://stathead.com/baseball/player-batting-season-finder.cgi?request=1&match=player_season_combined&order_by=b_onbase_plus_slugging_plus&ccomp[1]=gt&cstat[1]=b_onbase_plus_slugging_plus&ccomp[2]=gt&cval[2]=1500&cstat[2]=b_pa&team_id=DET&comp_id[]=AL
  5. That goes without saying for almost every player. The only exceptions might be a Detroit native or life long Tiger.
  6. All I want is a consistent winner. If they do it with a bunch of cooperative guys or like the 1970s Athletics it is not important. to me. Chances are they'll get along better in their good years than in their bad years regardless of who is on the team.
  7. That sounds like bull**** that management people say all the time. I am hoping they are better at it than the previous administration, but I think those are the kind of things that all management people want. They'll make exceptions if a **** like Doyle Alexander is unbeatable for two months.
  8. When it comes to building a team culture, I leave that totally up to the team. I don't think that is something fans really know about. The players may very well like Rodriguez and be sympathetic to whatever his problems are. The Tigers have a history of malcontents, who were important parts of some great teams. Two notable examples are Ty Cobb and Denny McLain.
  9. Ideally, they get one guy for multiple years plus another Lorenzen/Boyd type. I don't know if they are ready for that commitment, but that is my hope.
  10. yeah, I wouldn't be totally against it, but it may be better to let him opt out and see what they can get in free agency.
  11. I have changed my thoughts on possibly extending him. I don't necessarily want him gone because he's a difficult person. That's not a concern of mine, but extending him feels unnecessary. I want them to add a good pitcher or two to go with Mize/Manning/Skubal and their cast of prospects, but after looking at the list of free agent pitchers again, I think they should be able to get what they need without extending Rodriguez.
  12. I still hope he opts in because he is a good pitcher and that would be a good three-year contract for the Tigers. It would also be easier to move him at next year's deadline with no opt out involved and 2 1/2 years remaining.
  13. It's all speculation and hypotheticals at this point, but this was my thought.
  14. It was a difficult process due to the nature of his contract, but I have got to believe that there other teams that wanted a pitcher of Rodriguez's caliber and would have returned something of value. I think the problem was figuring out to make the contract work.
  15. That is fair. GMing is hard, but it was Harris' job to get something for Rodriguez and he didn't get it done so he has to take his share of the blame. If the same thing happened to Avila, there is no question that everybody would be blaming Avila.
  16. attention
  17. Harris traded our top pitcher and one of our best players for some guy hitting .179 in AA ball??? Who the **** is Carteraya??? What was he thinking???
  18. It would have been more fun to talk about Rodriguez and Rogers for a big prospect haul than talking about Rodriguez opting in or out.
  19. His track record is actually pretty good and consistent as far as performance. So, #2 would be my biggest concern as it would be with virtually every pitcher. Can he get 5-6 years with a rich free agent crop and concerns about his flakiness? After all, a number of smart people here are theorizing that teams didn't want him because of his contract.
  20. I would be fine with it too, although I think the deal is good as is. I do want them to have enough proven pitchers to be competitive next year. I don't want too many starts from guys like Wentz and Faedo.
  21. I was thinking about an extension before yesterday, but pitchers are delicate creatures. It would depend on the reason for his poor performance. If his velocity was down or strikeouts were way down, that would be a problem. Out-of-the-race would mean little to me. I want players to pitch well all the time. Six years would be too long. Four years would be reasonable for a pitcher of his caliber. I am not sure about five.
  22. I think the only way he'll opt in is if he pitches poorly the rest of the way. If he's worth keeping, then they'll most likely have to extend him. f he doesn't do well, then I don't want him. I want them to attempt to be reasonably competitive next year. To do so, they will need sign at least one good starter from a strong free agent crop this off-season. If Rodriguez pitches well, they have the inside track to sign him before he becomes a free agent. That might be their best chance.
  23. Fine. How You?
  24. Solid Game for Rodriguez. Screw all the teams that didn't want him. 😃
