Health research is not going to be able to function at all if the NIH cuts don't get reversed or substantially mitigated. I think people don't understand the difference between direct costs (not being cut) and indirect costs (severely cut). In my understanding, indirect costs are not in place to make profits, they are things that are essential to research (like equipment and labs) that are not allowed to be part of direct costs.

I understand that there are audits and there should be audits. What Musk is doing goes way beyond an audit. Slashing the budget is not an audit and should never be decided unilaterally.

He's not an auditor. As far as I know, he has experience as an auditor. Anyway, audits are done to detect fraud or error. Auditors do cut funding which is not fraudulent or erroneous.

Again, that's not the point. The problem is the one person who is controlling the budget right now is probably receiving more funding than any individual. That is a huge confict of interest and probably highly illegal. Biden has nothing to do with that. He's done.

It's such a shame. There is no need for any of this at all. The country was doing fine. There are always problems, but there was nothing happening in the US that required any radical change in the foundation of the country. We really screwed things up for no reason. Not really sure what plans to make. Are you talking about leaving the country? That's hard to do if you are not wealthy. Another problem there is that we are dragging every developed country in the world into this and many countries in Europe are having trouble as is. There aren't going to be a lot of places to turn anymore. Can't even think about Canada anymore!

According to this, if 3.5% of the population peacefully protests something, change will inevitably happen. That is roughly 11 million Americans protesting together at the same time. You'd need a tangible hook to get them together and it needs to stay peaceful which is no easy task. It's not out of the question though. What's the hook going to be? It doesn't matter when it originated. It's still a huge conflict of interest (to put it mildly) to have someone who is receiving more money than anyone overseeing the funding by the entire govt.

I don't think many are salivating over Arenado either. He is already in deep decline and has three years left at 30 million. I would think that acquiring him would be more about taking on salary than giving up players of value.
