  1. I don't know whether I agree or disagree with this, but I do agree that pitching and defense works together in a way that makes it difficult to measure the value of defense.
  2. His offensive projections look pretty consistent across different systems. He doesn't get on a lot, but has good power for a shortsop. He is going to be a really big upgrade I am a bit concerned about his defense being statistically average last year. Is that a fluke or has he peaked? Even if he just average, he'll still be a big upgrade, but elite defense like he had in 2019 would make him an allstar caliber player.
  3. One play I'd love to see again is Gibson practically passing Whitaker between third and home and then knocking down both the catcher and umpire barrelling into the plate. I have never seen anything else like it. In the same game he hit a ball completely over the right field roof. Here is an article:https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/sports/1983/06/15/red-sox-win-cant-stop-gibson/14341127-b597-4c7e-8908-476ae47dd89d/ Gibson actually knocked down the umpire Larry Barnett who fell into catcher Rich Gedman forcing him to drop the ball. Strangely, Whitaker was out on the play. Barnett was carried off the field on a stretcher. I remember reading in The Boston Globe that the bug eyed Brown told Gibson after the play that he shouldn't do things like that because someone is going to get hurt and Gibson went ballistic. Brown walked them the next time up and Gibson told first baseman Dave Stapleton that if Brown says anything else, he better watch out because he's going to go legally insane. Brown was never quite the same after that! The boxscore:https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/DET/DET198306140.shtml
  4. Tony Clark has been holding it in for 30 years. You finally broke him and it's going to get ugly.
  5. One thing which is not commonplace is for an industry to have an anti-trust exemption allowing it to behave like a monopoly.
  6. Divide them into three divisions based of records over the last three seasons. The top ten teams go in the Willie Mays Division, The next ten teams go in the Chet Lemon Division. The bottom ten go in the Milt Cuyler Division Seven teams from the Mays Division make the playoffs, five from the Lemon Division and two from the Cuyler Division.
  7. Realigning geographically is always a fun exercise, but I don't know what it accomplishes. If half the teams are going to make the playoffs, why even have divisions? Every team plays every team 5 or 6 times and then the top 14 make the playoffs.
  8. I didn't like divisions and a balanced schedule because it was illogical. I thought the point of having divisions was to play more games against regional opponents. If you aren't going to have that, then just have one big league and take the top four teams. I know they created divisions for maketing the illusion that more teams had a shot, but I have little tolerance for setups based on marketing.
  9. Those were the days! I was actually intrigued by interleague play when it first started, but the novelty wore out a long time ago and I don't like it. I prefer the mystique of separate leagues.
  10. I don't think the playoffs are going to last much longer than they already have. They are talking about the first round as three games all at the park of the better team, so they wouldn't need a travel day during the series. This would replace the play-in game they now have. Then the rest of the playoffs will be the same as usual.
  11. It's tech heavy and everybody has been saying it's going to be a bad year for tech with interest rates rising. So, I figured I'd take my profits and get out. I got into gold. I have most of my money in low cost SP500 index funds though.
  12. There will be more bad teams playing "meaningful" games down the stretch. The good teams will be able to cruise at the end which is boring.
  13. Some of the teams I remember most from my youth were dynasties like the Orioles, Athletics and Reds. I like it when there are teams like that. They become villains which every other team wants to beat. I wouldn't want a league where all the teams were average and a different team wins every year. Look at NCAA football. You've got the same teams winning every year and it's still very popular.
  14. Baseball is not boxing. Even great teams in any era lose 50-60 games a year.
  15. Sure, having more resources helps, but it doesn't mean you'll be more successful in the post-season crapshoot. And there will be expanded playoffs. I think that's a foregone conclusion. Besides, I think the fact that there are good teams and bad teams is entertaining. Too much parity is boring. You need some big villains and little heroes.
  16. There was lots of competitive balance in the 70s and 80s without any CBT. I just don't see that it matters now with so many teams in the playoffs. As much as I hate the set up, the idea is to make the playoffs and try to win the championship. The expaned playoffs gives everybody a chance regardless of whether a few teams spend more money than all the others.
  17. When 14 teams make the playoffs, everybody has a chance to be competitive regardless. If you can't be competitive with that, then you should sell your team.
  18. Biden is a terrible speaker. They say a lot of untrue stuff about him, but that part is true. Obviously Trump was terrible too.
  19. Yes, my life was better when I was ignorant of politics. I should get back to that.
  20. 14 teams are going to be in the playoffs. So, even if a few teams have more resources than all the other teams, there are still plenty of opportunities for poorer teams to win. nothing is required. The owners just want to keep salaries as low as possible.
  21. I got out of FCNTX about a month ago after being in it for about 15 years. I also invested in GLD at the beginning of the year which turned out to be a good move. It's not enough to avoid the pain though. Most of my money is still in either SP500 or Bond mutual funds which of course are getting killed.
  22. I don't really care as most of the issues don't affect me as a fan. I just favor the players over the owners. The players are why I watch the game.
  23. Trump bailed out again for 500th time in 40 years.
