I can see Manfred doing this too. I don't believe he has any feel for the game or its history. A lot of young fans don't care about history, but baseball fans, more than any other sport I think, have always liked tradition and history and you are going to lose fans if you don't understand this. Baseball will never be as exciting to the casual fan as other sports. You can't compete with them at that level.- 1,851 replies

I have never liked expanded playoffs, but 14 teams goes above my threshold of what I find acceptable. They are trying to mold baseball to be a generic sport like any other sport and I think expanded playoffs work worse in baseball than any other sport.- 1,851 replies

I was just giving a hyperbolic response to your cliche mocking of the double switch. I have never seen anyone here say that the double switch was a reason for wanting pitchers to bat.- 1,851 replies

Yeah, this could be the most destructive move they had made since I became a fan and Manfred's rationale was "fans love brackets!!!!!"- 1,851 replies

I think they should make it like football where you have separate offensive and defensive teams. That way you'll always have a good hitter at the plate and great fielders in the field.- 1,851 replies

Yeah, this is what I don't like about the DH. I like it when teams are forced to decide whether to play the slugging outfielder who can't field at all versus the weak hitting gold glove caliber defender. That is more interesting to me than having the no defense slugger just bat the entire game.- 1,851 replies

Pitchers hit .142 with a wrc+ or 6 in 1972, the last year before the DH. They hit .108 with a -22 wrc+ in 2022. So, they have gotten signicantly worse since 1972, but they were bad back then too. Pitchers weren't always anemic hitters. They hit .216 in 1930 with a 32 wrc+ which was still not good but they were enough of a threat to not be considered an automatic out. Even in the 1940s and 1950s they hit .180 some years. They started to drop off a lot after that. The Negro League pitchers were actually pretty good hitters and it was not uncommon for individual pitchers to play multiple positions and hit better than league average.- 1,851 replies

I don't care which side wins. I kind like the draft lottery. It will be fun! I don't really like the DH, but it's not practical to have pitchers bat anymore. I just wish they would do something to discourage the use of professional designated hitters - maybe limit the number of plate appearances some can have as a DH over the course of the season. Expanding the playoffs to 14 teams is the worst thing ever.- 1,851 replies

Stafford watch (A place for Stafford discussion)

It's OK for kids I guess. I am not a kid. 🙂 I can't believe the nation's ad execs have conned the country into thinking they must tune in to watch their ads. It boggles the mind! -
Stafford watch (A place for Stafford discussion)
Tiger337 replied to RedRamage's topic in Detroit Lions
The only way to watch the Superbowl is to mute the commercials and go eat a long meal at half time. A couple of years ago I was at a family Super Bowl party and I left at halftime. They were shocked that I would leave with before the game was over when the Patriots were playing. I said "All I've seen for two hours is singing, dancing and commercials. Where's the football?". -
Young peope today are usually more comfortable around people of different races than adults. Most people are not intentionally racist today, but they make assumptions about Blacks and Hispanics which can make their lives difficult.

Torkelson and Greene are not on the 40-man roster. I am a bit worried about Paredes though. $130,000 doesn't go too far with inflation as it is and Issac likes to eat.- 1,851 replies

I was looking at players that played the majority of time at third base and then I counted all seasons they played at any position. Certainly if Cabrera played most of his time at third base, he would be #1 by a lot.- 1,851 replies

You have to understand. When Archie refers to liberals, he is talking about people that support Mitt Romney.

Also, talk fast.

Prospects in particular. I bet if you went through all the proven player for prospect deals in the last 15 years, you would find out that the team getting the propspect loses more often than not. That doesn't mean a team shouldn't make those deals, but if your team gets into that position too often then the odds will be against them.
-
I think it's just the nature of prospects. They are risky. You are going to miss more often than you hit, so you need your hits to be big ones. There is a lot of luck involved too.
-
It seems to me that teams that trade proven players for prospects at the deadline lose the trade more often than not. When you repeatedly have deadline fire sales, you are not dealing from a position of strength.

I am glad that they are mostly peaceful. I support people who peacefully protest something that they strongly believe in even if I think they are choosing the wrong battle. I don't support them clogging up major roads for days and days. I supported BLM protests. I didn't support violent extremists hijacking their protests looting and destroying property. There is no fascist regime in the White House. That is silly.
