  1. He can hit .280 no problem. If he wants to be a really important player, he'll need to draw walks (which will never happen) or hit for power
  2. Butternut squash is my favorite vegetable.
  3. This is exactly what they need and number three only needs to be a stop gap defense first catcher. The question is whether they will be willing to spend enough to get both (1) and (2).
  4. He won't hit enough to be a reguIar, but I think the power is for real. He can probably be a decent backup catcher for a couple of years.
  5. Shannon has been around baseball for a really long time. He almost died from kidney failure about 50 years ago.
  6. I just looked at his historical stats and you do have a point. Over the last five years, he has consistently hit much better with runners on base. So, here's the solution: make him a pinch hitter who bats once a game always in a key spot. Yeah, I know he needs to have three crappy at bats to keep his mind in the game for his one good at bat!
  7. Cabrera has a .386 slugging percentage. His RBI total is purely a function of opportunity. If his name was anything other than "Miguel Cabrera", he would not get that opportunity.
  8. There's got to be some money angle behind it. I'm not sure what it is though.
  9. Cabrera has a .707 OPS this year which isn't really fine if you are trying to make a playoff run. Everybody loves what he has done for the Tigers and some like watching him get milestones, but if they are able add some hitters and he's still playing every day in the middle of the line-up, he'll hurt the team.
  10. For what it's worth (not a lot), Heyman says the Tigers are interested in Correa. https://twitter.com/JonHeyman/status/1443985561270853673?s=20
  11. There will be 14 teams in the playoffs next year. Any team that doesn't make it really really does not deserve it.
  12. It's a competitive league with owners who are particularly knowledgeable about prospects. There are no sleepers because everyone stays on top of everything. I prefer roto over head to head, but I liked the draft and the trading and all the fantasy GM aspects of the league. I left because I have been spending more time on historical simulation leagues. I still have one roto league I've been in for 18 years, but that's it.
  13. Yeah, it is pretty short.
  14. I think a reason a hollow batting average player might be OK on the bench is because you can bring him up to pinch hit in situations where a hit is better than a walk.
  15. Probably true, although I don't really expect Tigers to have a 5th outfielder. The fifth outfielder is probably a utility player who also plays infield.
  16. True, and there is nothing speculative about it. He actually said it.
  17. So, is this the Old Fart Tigers Forum now? I like it.
  18. One concern is if they go after mid-range guys and get burned. Without doing an analysis, those seem to be the guys that kill teams. I'd rather they go big on one guy and then look for some bargains.
  19. I was just looking at Victor Reyes' similarity scores on B-Ref. The second most similar player is Jim Thorpe!
  20. I would argue that it's always the right time from a fan's perspective.
  21. I expect them to spend more this winter. I don't know how much more, but I am confident they will try to put together a playoff team.
  22. It's about as good as you'll get in the wildcard era, but fighting for a wildcard game is not the same as battling for a division title, not to mention 7 consecutive one-run games between the top two teams. Next year when there are 14 teams, we'll get to watch a race between .500 teams battling for the 14th spot.
  23. I will never take Reyes seriously as a starter until he can either draw walks or hit for power. I am pretty sure he will never draw walks. So, he'll have to hit for power which also seems unlikely at this point. He is OK as a 4th outfielder.
  24. I remember the thrill of the pennant race more than the pain of the playoffs. There won't ever be another pennant race like that again.
