It's only six games of ten runs or more which I think that can happen randomly. I don't think it's a situation whre they are good hitting team which should be scoring runs on a regular basis. They are a poor hitting team which occasionally has a good game.

That is a problem and a reason I don't like deadline selling. However, I am still hoping that Flaherty is good enough this year where they can get something of real value. If not, I hope they extend him.

We may have different defintions of "lotto ticket" but If all Harris gets is a lotto ticket for Flaherty, I would be disappointed. With a lot of teams looking for pitching and Flaherty having an excellent season, I am hoping they either exrend him or get a major league ready prospect.

I have always wondered about the saying "speed and defense don't go into slumps". A good defensive player could go into a slump if he goes through a period when he's not concentrating. I think we have see that with Baez. Kinsler was another one. He would go through most of the year doing everything right and then he'd make a series of bonehead baserunning or defensive plays.

I think Fetter is great. He makes the Tigers a better team. Coaching can only do so much though. You can't sustain anything without talent,

I agree with that since they were not capable of that last year.

For the first few years with Fetter/ Hinch, the bullpen did well without much talent. It looked liked they had some bullpen magic. This year, not so much. So, maybe bullpen success is more about talent and luck than about management. You really can't reliably predict bullpens.

I see it as mostly random variation.

That was the most exciting individual season for a Tiger that I have witnessed. It's hard to explain what it was like if you were too young to remember. That Monday Night game versus the Yankees is required viewing for any Tigers fan.

I was 21 during 1984 and it was my peak as a sports fan. I was really into the Celtics and I still liked the NFL (especially the Browns). Sports was a bigger deal to me then and there was more emotion. Now, I've gotten way more analytical about everything. And yes 1984 was better than any of their recent teams. You could make a case that the recent team had a better run than the 80s team, but they never had a team as good as 1984. There were no questions about who was the best team in 84 from start to finish.

I ordered it, but haven't started reading yet. It is next on my list. I got a chance to chat with the author Tom Gage on the phone recently about another book he is writing. He wanted my opinion on a statistical formula he was using to rank players. He was very humble. He said he was sorry to bother me and glad that I remembered him. Really? Gage is a Detroit media legend.

I was a fan for life long before 1984, but 1984 is the year I'll never forget. That team was near perfect and had no weakness. They had starting pitching, bullpen, hitting, fielding and depth. It was also a mostly home grown team which stayed together for several years. The Leyland era Tigers was great too, but didn't quite have the same feeling for me. Even if they won the World Series, it probably wouldn't have been quite the same because I was older and more cynical!

True, not much has been made of the decrease in offense in MLB to this point. It will likely get better in the summer months, but it probably won't catch up to 2023 overall

I think the answer is both. They have improved offensively this year, but they are not the 13th best team offensively. Their OPS and other rate stats don't show that, but they have somehow upped their run total by bunching their hits together.

No, the Media (including lineral outlets) want him around for as long as possible because he helps them make a profit. He is an absolute lunatic who has been normalized for 8 years because they want him stay in the news.

I remember it well. That was probably one of the five worst Tigers games of my life right up there with game 163, the Ortiz homer in the playoffs, etc.

That's a Little League mistake.

The only things a pitcher controls consistently from year to year are strikeouts and walk rate and those things stabilize pretty quickly, so if something changes you'll notice it fairly quickly. A pitcher has some control over hits and home runs, but there is a lot of variation. Things like barrel rate and hard hit rate are not nearly as predictive for pitchers as they are for batters. It's hard to reliably evaluate pitchers beyond BB and K rate. It's not impossible, but there is a lot of guess work involved. WHIP is better than ERA for relievers, but neither is very predictive of future performance.

So, we can wait three years for their core to be promoted and watch them not hit for another year. That brings us out to at least 2027.

I never really have an opinion on who they draft. I love reading about them and speculating, but I don't think we can really project these guys especially after the first two picks.

Eduardo is sure getting a lot of hate for a guy who led the team in WAR last year. 😃
