If they get blame for the misses, they should get credit for the hits. But I think the scouting staff will suddenly start to look better now that the team has a more competitive roster and a more competitive coach. It will become rarer that they have to settle for the second or third or fourth best option on their FA lists just to fill a roster spot.

Special thanks to that sub-par pro scouting staff. 😉

There is, of course, a ton of speculation here, but the NFL has brought it on itself. -

Yes this has been all over. The question I have (and posted in the other thread) is when did that bet come in? Was it after Dan Campbell had his pre-game meeting with the officials (at which he undoubtedly told them about this play)? -
“Item 3. T-Formation Quarterback. It is legal for a T-Formation Quarterback to go in motion, whether he has placed his hands under center, on his knees, or on the body of the center. However, it is a false start if the action is quick and abrupt. If the player fails to come to a complete stop for at least one full second prior to the ball being snapped, it is illegal motion.” This rule is confusing and poorly written. Boomer Esiason was confused about it. He made the point that Goff did not put his hands under center, which is one of the three criteria listed above for establishing that you are a T-formation QB. Goff did not do any of those three things. He did remain behind center for a second but never established himself as a T-formation QB as stated above. Was he required to?
-
Does anyone know when the bet was placed? Like, was it placed after Campbell’s pre-game conference with the officials?
-
Agreed, but it is one thing to have bad calls go against you. It is something entirely different to have the league office call down to the sideline and, apparently, violate the league’s own rulebook to change a call in favor of a team that is already suspected of getting preferential treatment by the league. This weird $500k bet that the guy thought he won, but then lost, is another very odd factor, especially now that the league is accepting massive advertising money from bookies. This does not smell right at all.

This is a Sheila to Roger call now.

Chris needs to determine whether it’s worth a third of a billion dollars to have the hope of someday building a statue of a homegrown talent outside Tiger Stadium (or whatever the hell bank it is named for today). Skubal needs to determine whether he will settle for a third of a billion.
-
Totally agree. But let’s be fair that a huge step forward occurred in 2024. Nobody expected that run. I may be the only one who thinks this but I think you have to run it back with Skubal next year. Realistically they were a bat away from making it to the ALCS. One FA signing and calling up one or two of the hitting prospects during the year gets you there. Then you’ve demonstrated to Skubal you are willing and able to contend. Maybe this gives you an angle to retain him long term.

Chiarot is in the last year of his contract. I assume he is no better than Plan D for Seider’s partner next year. Plan A would be to bump someone up from current 2nd or 3rd pairing. Plan B would be to elevate a Griffin. Plan C would be to sign a more dynamic FA. Plan D would be to bring back Chiarot. He got hired to do a job. He has done it respectably. Wings fans should tip their caps to him.

One thing I do not like about the offense this year is the downgrading of David Montgomery. I believe he is one of the team’s tone setters. If there is a team you really want to bully, you need to have him in the lineup early and often. He only got four rushing attempts against KC. This is not enough.
-
Maybe. But maybe (and probably) Boras has already told them, “We are going to market no matter what you offer.” That’s his job and he’s good at it.
-
Good. He can rest before the bye when the Lions will be playing a team probably without its top four receivers.
-
I get it, but who are you suiting up in his place on Wednesday night?

You see one or two hits like Hutch laid every week. Frustrating to see as a fan but it is not as easy to go from full speed to full stop as it might look. You see one or two hits like Branch laid every year. As coach pointed out, it is not acceptable. -
All this talk about how Chiarot would be better suited for the third pairing is missing the point. Of course he would be, but when he was hired there was nobody else suited to play on the first pairing. Chiarot has done exactly what he was hired to do, which is to eat up minutes for four years until the franchise had credible prospects to replace him on the blue line. Even now, leaving aside Edvinsson and ASP who promise to be a formidable second pairing, there is nobody who is clearly head and shoulders above Chiarot. Anyway, his contract is up after this season so the search for a successor is on, whether it is a prospect or a new free agent.
-
It’s almost like Yzerman and the staff have done a good job of rebuilding the talent pipeline and there are now several talented prospects who promise to be able to win jobs from replacement level veterans who command NHL market salaries. Looking at the roster/contracts going into this season, I thought maybe they’d call up one or two players to start the season at most. I assumed the youth movement would begin next year. But clearly the youth movement has started this season, and will undoubtedly see at least Danielson and Mazur and probably Wallinder up this year also.

I don’t even know who two of the top three defensive performers are. And the third is a backup. -

They also need to make the audio between NY command center and field officials available after the fact. If they want to put to bed any notion that they might be in cahoots with the bookies who are now their biggest sponsors. -

As always, it is disappointing when the refs pull points off of the board. It would have been a different game had they not. Also, ASB catches that pass 999 times out of 1000. It is a different game if he catches it. Apart from that, it seems like the front seven was a lot less aggressive tonight than they were against the Ravens. Was that by choice given the depleted secondary, or was it that they just did not have time to get home? Probably a bit of both. Hopefully Alim is back for TB to juice the pass rush. Then we can get healthy over the bye.
