While I don't think a Christian fundamentalist like Alito would want slavery back, I do think he'd love to leave issues like inter-racial marriage, gay marriage, LGBTQ equity, women's rights in the workplace, anti-discrimination laws, voting rights up to the states. States rights arguments are the same way of saying you don't support something. I think Alito, Barrett, Kavanaugh, and Thomas want this nation to look fundamentally different than it does now. They fundamentally don't believe the federal government should be in the business of promoting equity and equality. It's ironic for Thomas considering he is both black and from the south that without the federal government stepping in and mandating equity southern states in this country would still infringe on his right to vote and right to marry his wife Virginia.

As much as the radical Christian right loves kids, they love guns even more. Nothing trumps their love for guns. If the radical Christian right put the energy into ensuring well-funded schools, universal healthcare, nutritious food on everyone's table, shelter over everyone's head, as they do pimping out for guns, the world would be a better place. But you know, that would require you to act like a, um, Christian.

NFL Draft Night - As It Happens.

LOL at the dude from the Houston Chronicle giving his own team an A. The Texans reached on a Guard in the 1st round in Kenyon Green and drafted what could be the 2nd or 3rd best Corner, who had 1 productive season 2 years ago in Stingley Jr., when they had needs at literally every position on the field. Were I Nick Cesario and the Texans GM I would have picked Ikem Ekwonu or Kayvon Thibodeaux at #3 and then one of Treylon Burks or Trent McDuffie at #15 after the trade back. What do I really know though. -
Right. I still believe in all the flaws and critiques I pointed out back in 2016. I still believe she is an empty shell, with little conviction on public policy. I still believe she flip-flops, vacillates, and does things out of political expediency. I still hate her husband, the bad policies he enacted during his Presidency and the woman he hurt throughout his lifetime. As you said though, when the choice is someone who cares for democracy and democratic norms and someone who does not, the choice is obvious. I did vote for Hillary, I wished I would have done more to convince others to do the same.

If the Republicans don't pay a political price at the ballot box as a result of what is happening to women's choice and abortion rights then all this discussion we're having here and all the hand ringing and protesting across the country is for not. If you consider yourself pro women, pro choice, pro healthcare, pro religious freedom, pro democracy, pro liberty, in any way, shape or form, you have to get out and vote and make the Republicans pay a steep political price at the ballot box. If they win the House and Senate then you as an American have not done your job. Get out and vote for Democratic candidates or else you have failed if you consider yourself pro women, choice, healthcare, democracy, religious freedom, liberty, and on. Even if that Democratic candidate is too moderate, not progressive enough or too far to the left, if they have a (D) next to their name on the ballot, get out and vote for them. That's all there is to it.

I regret a lot of things in my life, including criticizing Hillary Clinton the way I did back in 2015/2016. The one thing I don't regret though, is deciding to vote for Hillary Clinton in the end. Had she been elected President we wouldn't be here.

What would stop them from doing that now? This suspected ruling by the Supreme Court will make it the wild west for states to create all kinds of laws and impose them on woman who have abortions, whether in or out of state. They'll also likely criminalize anyone aiding the woman in having an abortion, so a parent, a friend, whomever may drive a woman to a healthcare clinic, will face accessory type charges as well.

Don't ever call a pro life person on the radical Christian right pro life, they are only pro birth. First and foremost, they are looking to impose their ignorant views of Jesus and Christianity on all of us with a national Christian religion. Don't lose sight of that, they want all of us to fall under and live by their bastardized version of what they think Jesus said and did. When it comes to helping the poor and those in need, you know, actually providing people with a good quality of life, the Christian Right are bootstrappers through and through. They are some of the most vocal opponents of public assistance programs like TANF benefits, SNAP, WIC, free/reduced school lunch programs, SChip for children's healthcare, Medicaid expansion, Obamacare with preexisting protection previsions, woman's healthcare initiatives, universal healthcare programs like Medicare For All, mental health reforms, student debt forgiveness, racial equity initiatives, and more. They are also proponents of Social Security privatization and ending Social Security altogether. They also worship a man who goes on profanity laced tirades, runs scam charities for veterans, and bilks people out of their money with fraudulent real estate and college courses. They believe that gays, lesbians, transgendered, and non-binary are subhuman and damned to a life of hell. They oppose the right of people to marry whom they love and identify with the gender they feel comfortable with. They fiercely defend the rights of business owners to refuse service to people based on their sexual orientation. The Christian Right denounces Christianity and Jesus every single day when they selectively live by the words of the Bible and the compassionate Christ they claim to love. They denounce being a truly pro life person when the fight so fiercely against public assistance and social welfare programs that lift people up and provide them with a better quality of life. So they are not pro life, they are only pro birth.

I love when we on the left get told we're being hyperbolic about how radicalized the Republicans and Christian right are in America. Abortion is done for at least a decade in America. Contraception, teaching sex ed, and marriage equality will be next. This is Republicans America. Obergafell, Griswold, Casey will all be done soon.

NFL Draft Night - As It Happens.

I think it all comes down to age. Stafford was mid 30s versus mid 20s with Kyler and Lamar. You're presumably getting a decade out of either Lamar or Kyler in their prime versus 2-4 seasons of Stafford in his prime. I agree with Buddha that the bidding starts at 3 1sts. If I'm willing to do it for unproven commodities in Stroud or Young then I'd probably do it for Kyler or Lamar as well. -

Let's split the difference and say the Lions end up with 7-8 wins next year, not bad enough to draft in the top 10 and not good enough to have taken a big leap forward and be a playoff team. As a result of that they will be drafting #14 overall (Ravens won 8 games this season and ended up at #14) and they have decided to move on from Goff. Let's also say the Rams have another super successful season but don't win the Super Bowl and their pick ends up in the #29 overall. Does a trade that involves a mid 1st round pick at #14 pick, a late 1st at #29 pick, and a future Lions 1st in 2024 get it done to either move up in the 1st round to get Stroud/Young or to get one of Lamar Jackson or Kyler Murray? -

So I hope we see growth from all of our young talent to the point that we are picking outside of the top 10 next year. That said, if Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, Will Levis, Grayson McCall, whomever ends up being a can't miss QB prospect, I'm willing to do what it takes to move up and get one of those QBs. I know, we had Stafford on this roster and I spent years complaining about a guy who I didn't believe could get it done, only to watch him go and get it done the year after he leaves our franchise. The appeal of having a top young QB prospect on our team, under a rookie contract, with a quickly developing roster of other talented, young players, is something I'd love to see. If Stroud, Young, Levis, whoever is the real deal, I'm willing to package 2-3 1st rounders to go up and get them given how important having a good QB is in the NFL. -
Lions Draft Grades and After Draft Talk/What's Next?
Mr.TaterSalad replied to AlaskanTigersFan's topic in Detroit Lions
The Paschal pick is the one pick that gives me even the slightest bit of hesitation. I don't dislike the player at all, based on what I've read. Rather, it's did the they make the right decision passing up on Nakobe Dean, Chad Muma, or Troy Andersen in favor of Paschal. Time will tell on that one, but my preference was for them to grab a LB there, with Dean being my first choice. -
Hands down, Naomi and Wynonna Judd, The Judds, were one of the best duos in not only country music, but music as a whole. Country artists often get pigeonholed and stereotyped because of the amount of people that don't like the genre. But Naomi and Wynonna Judd were up there with the best of them, in any genre. RIP to Naomi Judd. While the news isn't out there, it is speculated that Naomi committed suicide after a long battle with mental illness.

NFL Draft Night - As It Happens.
Mr.TaterSalad replied to Motor City Sonics's topic in Detroit Lions
I will start out by saying that overall, what I know of these players they drafted, I like. I am not smart enough nor have I watched enough film on each of the individual players drafted to truly dive in deep, evaluate what they did, and give a real, earnest, credible opinion. This is just my 1,000 foot view as a hardcore fan who watches a lot of college football, YouTube clips, and reads pages of player analysis online in the months leading up to the draft. There are times where I've been right in my amateur opinion and times I've been horribly wrong on player evaluations. The biggest thing, above all else, that I appreciate about what Brad Holmes and the front office did this year was drafted seemingly talented players with natural speed, game play speed, and athletic ability. Gone are the slow, big, unathletic guys of the past that we saw from Quinntricia. There were no unathletic, plodding players like Teez Tabor or Jahlani Tavai. Instead, even though some of these players are still a mystery to us, they bet big on athletic ability and the upside that comes with it. After a dark 3 years of Quinn and Patricia drafting the types of players they did, I really appreciate what Holmes and Co. did here in the draft by leaning heavily on athleticism and speed, things you can't teach a player. I love the Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams picks a lot as individual players. I'm glad that we have a regime that finally recognizes the importance of having good pass rushers to get after the QB. When you've got to play Aaron Rodgers twice a year and (assuming he develops into a good QB) Justin Fields twice a year, you need top-tier pass rushers who can get pressure on the QB and disrupt plays. I think they've obviously got that in Hutch and possibly in Paschal as well, depending on how he develops. This regime also seems to recognize that you need explosive playmakers and gamebreakers on offense to score and win in this league. Assuming he comes back fully healthy and ends up being the top wideout in this class as some projected him to be, I think Williams will be the playmaker on offense we desperately needed. St. Brown is a very nice slot guy and #2 option at WR. If he plays like he did last year and improves upon it, he could develop into one of the better/best slot guys in the league. But Williams is the type of guy that, once you get a better QB, can really be unleashed and blow the top off defenses and help you build an elite scoring offense. This is a guy that should be 90-100+ catches, 1,100-1,200+ yards, 10+ TDs. He is a game wrecker you can build an entire scheme around. They essentially traded one of their two 3rd round picks to move up and get him. In the end, while I had some reservation on draft night, I think this was a really shrewd move by Brad Holmes and he fleeced Minnesota in the deal. If Williams develops into what we hope he can be, I'd much rather have him than anyone we could have gotten at #32 or #34. He's tall, athletic, fast, has solid hands, and is by all accounts a smart, crisp route runner. He should be our #1 WR for the next decade around Detroit. My loan disappointment was them passing on Nakobe Dean. Being fully honest, I don't know enough about Dean as a player, what scheme this coaching staff wants to truly run under Aaron Glenn, how Dean would have fit that scheme, and Dean's ability to stay healthy and on the field. After all, Dean may not have been a scheme fi, he may have been too small for what they want to do, and he may have too many red flags as far as his personal health goes. Being able to stay healthy and on the field is an important trait. Still, I would have loved for them to take the risk, address a big area of need, and draft Dean. I have the feeling the Eagles are getting a stud and a steal in Nakobe Dean. We will see. All in all though, I don't think I've ever felt this happy about a Lions draft in my entire life. I have more confidence in Brad Holmes than I did last year and this years draft, at least on paper, has only boosted my confidence. This was by my uneducated opinion and by the metrics of at least semi-reputable draft analyst a really solid draft. We addressed needs not just for the sake of picking a body to fill a hole, but with talented players, with high athletic upsides. With a roster devoid of playmaking and game changing talent. Holmes went out and potentially got 2-3 playmakers to elevate this roster. Great job Brad, great job front office, at least so far. We will see now how it translates on the field. Maybe these aren't the Same Old Lions for fucking once! -

I don't understand what Bill Belichick is doing. He picks a Guard with a 4th-5th round grade in the first in Cole Strange, a WR with a 3rd-4th round grade in Tyquon Thornton in the 2nd, and now he needlessly wastes a 4th round pick a QB in Bailey Zappe. I think New England has a really bad draft on paper. -

I think it's clear given the two DEs and WR the Lions picked, Hutch, Paschal and Williams, that unlike Quinntrica, this regime really values athleticism. They want guys they have the athletic ability to be disrupters and playmakers. I don't know what Paschal will bring ultimately, but he's certainly got the athletic upside to be good. -
