  1. anyone want to work for the Tigers? https://blogs.fangraphs.com/instagraphs/job-posting-detroit-tigers-performance-science-roles/
  2. must be a real *** . teams are not interested in keeping him around
  3. if you add in Holland, Erasmo Ramirez, Nunez, Mazara, and Ramos, Avila spent about $15M on non-Grossman/Schoop free agents. probably would have been better off signing 1-2 players who can actually impact the team. not sure how much Krol, Hutchinson or Garneau made.
  4. yes, but assumption is that he has found something that works and would want to stay. he made $1.5M* so makes sense to have him stick around for $3M. good for him if he can get more elsewhere. *Urena got $3.25M and Tehern $3M
  5. Ilitch's (sometimes crazy) spending was not the issue; the lack of success of drafting and developing was what brought it crashing down
  6. just realized that Houston has developed so much young pitching that Grienke will pitch in relief during the playoffs
  7. if I remember this correctly, a decade ago the union flipped out because some team cut a guy late in spring training who won his arbitration case. union claimed that is why he was cut and team screwed him by cutting him after other opportunities filled. team just had to pay him a portion of his salary. totally within rules Players on arbitration contracts who are cut on or before the 16th day of Spring Training are owed 30 days' termination pay (based on the prorated version of his agreed-upon arbitration salary). A player cut between the 16th day and the end of Spring Training is owed 45 days' termination pay (based on the prorated version of his agreed-upon arbitration salary). The arbitration salary becomes guaranteed if the player is on the 25-man roster when the season begins.
  8. 2022 is Boyd's 4th and final year of arbitration. he made 6.5M in 2021, so if they offer him arbitration, he gets at least 5.2M (80%). seems like a lot for a guy who might get 10 starts in. 5M probably gets you a decent 5th starter w/o injury concerns. they are going to need to work something out before the arbitration deadline. like 2022 at $3m, with team option at $10M for 2023, or a $2M buyout. Boyd gets $5m minimum. Drew Smyly and Michael Pineda both signed 2/10M contracts coming off TJ, with expectation that they would not ptich year 1
  9. 2nd best #12 pick all-time after Nomar is Kirk Gibson in 1977
  10. they pick 12th Orioles (52-110) Diamondbacks (52-110) Rangers (60-102) Pirates (61-101) Nationals (65-97) Marlins (67-95) Cubs (71-91) Twins (73-89) Royals (74-88) Rockies (74-87) Mets (compensatory pick for not signing Kumar Rocker, the 10th overall pick in the 2020 draft) Tigers (77-85) Angels (77-85) Mets (77-85) https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/10/2022-amateur-draft-order-established.html
  11. don't disagree, but Wentz, Faedo, Turnbull, Rogers and Boyd (sort of) should appease any god no matter how cruel
  12. this is a great plan if you want Niko Goodrum to be the SS on Opening Day.
  13. some duds in 2021: Nick Quintana - god awful season except for a 2 week stretch in August; looks like he is going in full reverse as others pass him at 3b Parker Meadows - the hit tool does not seem to be there; and he battled various injuries Beau Burrows - awful Franklin Perez - LOL Elvin Rodriguez - reach AAA, but got worse as season progressed Bryant Packard - popular sleeper pick had bad year, injured Adinso Reyes - first state side ball for can be difficult for anyone, but was not good Trei Cruz - lots of rope here as he got his first pro ABs, but not good
  14. pretty accurate all around maybe low: Lange finished strong his last 20 innings; like Gardenhire, Hinch played Niko way too much and Hinch and Fetter get A+++, just amazing what they did with so little talent
  15. Position players needed: 1. SS; 2. Catcher; and (maybe) 3. someone to bounce between 1b/OF/DH until Tork and Greene arrive, but clearly they are both going to be in Detroit early if not Opening Day. Mark Cahna on low end / Schwarber on high end DH – Miggy – not yet, but soon, he will be in the way of a better player. C – Haase; add Tucker Barnhart as starter, a LH bat on a one year deal. Then Rogers and Dingler join Haase in 2023. 1b – Tork will finish season here; until then Miggy/HCastro/Niko/Canha?/Schwarber?/Rodriguez? 2b – Schoop, where he belongs SS – Semien or Story or Correa 3b – Candy Paredes, Clemens, Kreidler at Toledo; it will be a good problem to have to try to get looks at all of them (maybe Short as needed too), especially if they keep both Niko and HCastro. OF – Baddoo/Victor/Hill/Grossman until Greene comes up, then: Grossman in RF, Greene in CF, with Baddoo in LF, Hill or Daz as 4th OF. Victor will hang around some. WCastro in LF at Toledo? Not sure why they just do not cut the cord. JaCoby and Stewart will depart as MiLB FAs as well. Pitching: Tier 1: no one yet Tier 2: Mize, Skubal, Manning Tier 3: Alexander, WPeralta, FREE AGENT Tier 4 (unknowns): Wentz, Faedo, Shore, Garcia Bullpen: Fulmer, Cisnero, Funk, Lange, Soto is a nice start. An elite BP might be easier to build than an elite rotation (see Brewers). If so, add Raisel Igelsias and Andrew Chafin (LHR).
  16. Greene homers off Beau Burrows
  17. The Giants and the Red Sox have both pulled off some NBA style trades, taking on salary and a young asset for very little in return. The Rays have a continual 40-man roster crunch, and are going to want to get rid of Kiermaier so they can re-direct his $14.5M and play younger guys just as good. The Reds are in a bind with too many infielders making too much, Nick maybe walking, and not enough pitching. The Padres may need room to reload. And teams that don't want to go over the salary cap (whatever it will be under the new CBA) may want to dump money. It would be nice to see Aliva do something creative, or better yet, it would be nice to see someone who is not Avila do something creative for the Tigers.
  18. Mize for Abrams would be a really interesting idea
  19. Manning for Abrams would be a huge!!! win for Det. Pipeline has Tork, Abrams and Greene, at 4, 6 and 7 overall. Baseball prospectus has Abrams at 4. Baseball America has Abrams at 5. FG has Abrams, Tork and Greene, at 3, 4 and 7 overall, but they are very down on Abrams defense. Without the broken leg, Abrams clock would have been same as Greene and Tork, and if healthy you can still expect to see him in the majors for the second half of 2022.
