20234-24 14-68. Now what? (The 2024 Offseason thread)
NYLion replied to Motor City Sonics's topic in Detroit Pistons
If PG13 wants to come here, you take that and run. Grant I'm back and forth on. He has the skillset the Pistons need and I liked the way he swallowed his ego and allowed this to be Cade's team after Cade was drafted but that's a big contract for an aging player. I would have liked this idea if Grant was 2-3 years younger but he might be too old now. If we are to take anything away from Langdon's press conference, I don't think we'll see any big adds this offseason. Could see more Burks type moves taking on draft capital for an overpaid player that you can plug into the lineup. Hopefully somebody more impactful than Burks but it seems like the plan isn't too different than Weaver's, continue building around this core with players that won't break the back to acquire or sign. -
That's my thinking as well. They probably wouldn't get much in a trade down especially if it's in the top 10 but I'd taking any decent asset in addition to the top 10 pick and take my chances with one of the other prospects and teams seem to be hot for Clingan so it's possible. Clingan, Buzelis, Holland, Castle... not much at all to get excited about. I probably like Castle the most in that group and even he likely won't be much of an NBA scorer.

Bickerstaff turned them around before they acquired the star player ftr. Either way, I think you'd agree that this team isn't going anywhere until the roster is fixed. As awful as Monty was, and he was truly awful, a coach still needs players to work with so Langdon has his work cut out for him regardless of who the new coach is.

Yes, I like Atkinson but we're basing it on one year of success. Patricia was part of the best front office and coaching staff in the league. "Heat Culture" could very well be the new "Patriot Way" for all we know. This is what I'm saying, there's risk with every coach but I don't know why Bickerstaff's successful run with the Cavs makes him a disaster while Atkinson and Quinn are the right choices. You're taking a leap of faith with any of these guys. Outside of a few coaches, who knows who is really good or not.

They had one of the biggest turnarounds in the NBA under Bickerstaff, how is that not molding a team together? As I said before, no superstars to carry them either so you can't say... well, he was carried by Luka, Jokic, Embiid etc. I'm not sure how Mitchell being poor on D is Bickerstaff's fault, he was like that under every coach. How did he misuse Mobley? Which players weren't held accountable? I see every fanbase say this about their coach but I rarely see concrete examples given. With Monty, we had real examples of his failures. Starting Hayes for as long as he did. the regressions of Duren, Ivey, Ausar as the season wore on, failing to stagger the starters putting in the entire bench unit only to watch them get destroyed yet still keep them in etc. As I said before, Bickerstaff wouldn't be my top choice and I'm sure he has some flaws like every coach does but I'm having a hard time seeing a guy that turned a 19 win team into a 44 win team in 2 seasons as a disaster. Everybody loves Atkinson and Quinn but what do they have over Bickerstaff?

The Pistons added talent too but got worse every year. Not all talent is built the same but you still have to mold the talent to fit together, it's not like they had any superstars to carry the team/coach. He inherited a 19 win team and win 44 two seasons later so he must have done something right. I thought the whole locker room issue was Altman confronting Bickerstaff about some disagreement (don't remember what). I didn't hear about any player dissention. In any event, I wouldn't be over the moon about his hiring but I don't see anything on his resume that would scream "disaster". Of all the available options, he's won more than all of them.

Is he? Why? He completely turned that team around and that was before the Mitchell trade. His firing didn't seem to performance related, it seemed to be because Altman got in a confrontation with him that Altman started if the rumors are to be believed. I thought Cleveland did well against Boston considering how shorthanded they were.

20234-24 14-68. Now what? (The 2024 Offseason thread)
NYLion replied to Motor City Sonics's topic in Detroit Pistons
Because we watched the games and Monty was such a disaster that it's almost like he sabotaged the team on purpose out of spite for Gores dragging him out of temporary retirement, that's how bad his coaching was. You can tell right off the bat at his opening presser that the guy had little interest in the job and even admitted that he took it because the money was too good to turn down. I wish him well going forward and I feel for him for what he's gone through with losing his wife but.....good riddance, give me a coach that cares about the team and city and wants to be here. With that said, the roster needs a ton of work as well so it's not only a coaching issue but there was a big coaching issue last season. -

Thank God, Monty was the worst thing to ever happen to the Pistons. He had no interest in being here and coached like it. I gotta say about Gores, he might make the wrong personnel decisions time after time but the guy does what it takes with his resources to try to win at least. There are plenty of owners that wouldn't have footed the bill to rid of this coach but Gores did so credit to him for that. Now lets try to get it right this time, Kenny Atkinson would be my choice. -

So Langdon is president and GM? Sometimes presidents hire GMs so I assumed that was the case here since I don't see GM in his title. -

So are they hiring a GM before, ya know, the draft? I know they hired Blackstone as Langdon's assistant I guess? and the shooting coach but still no news on GM and coach and is now about a week away. Not off to a good start if you ask me. -
The draft sucks, it's as simple as that. I don't recall a draft when there was not one prospect you can point to and say that they'd be a surefire top 5 pick in previous drafts. Just look at last years' draft for instance. Is Sarr a better prospect than the Thompson twins? I don't know, maybe, but I can't say for sure that Sarr is better going into the draft. There's going to be good players coming out of this draft and maybe a franchise player or two because...who knows... but none of these guys outside of 23 year old Knecht and little guards Sheppard and Dillingham did much to raise their profile in their draft year. All the previously hyped guys either flatlined or regressed from their high school/international hype.

He's a baller and really clutch, he was the only reason Providence had any relevance. I always wondered why he didn't get more draft buzz. I don't think he's a fit for the Pistons because he's better with the ball in his hands but he's a lottery talent in this draft.

I get your frustration but I don't think they'll have a presser until the coaching situation is sorted out. -

Still hard to believe that a young team like that with no max contracts has relatively minimal cap space but I suppose those mid size contracts really took up a lot of space. -

How do the Spurs only have $21m of cap space? Without looking at their contract situation offhand, that just seems impossible. Vassell is their only sizeable contract as far as I know and even that one isn't near max. -
Shams and JEIII reporting Troy is gone! Monty next?
NYLion replied to Betrayer's topic in Detroit Pistons
There was a podcast that called this last night. They said Weaver was offered a lesser role in the organization and turned it down, Eric Tellem (yep, Arn's son) is going to get promoted and that Monty is likely staying. They were bang on with the Weaver part so...we'll see and hope they're wrong because I think Weaver, while obviously flawed, is the least of all the evils in this organization. -

I was just wondering the same. Draft is less than a month away, they need to get moving on this if he's going to make changes. Makes me think that Weaver and Monty are going nowhere. -
Beyond the nepotism aspect, does anybody believe that he REALLY has full autonomy? I'm sure when Weaver and Monty are retained, we'll get fed this BS that these were Langdon's guys when in reality nobody in this fanbase is dumb enough to believe that these guys were the best candidates after some fictitious thorough search. I hope I'm wrong but Langdon feels like a puppet, a "window dressing" hire to make it seem like there's change when nothing really changes in reality. Maybe I'm just jaded by this whole Gores regime but it's hard to have any faith in any decisions they make especially when they're hiring somebody with no real experience and who was a Tellem client.

Yeah, Monk is the kind of guy like Naz Reid for example that you want to sign before he blows up. Still, I'd give him the bag, he'd be a great fit for the Pistons. -
Trevor Lawrence at 3 is based on ??? I would rank St. Brown ahead of Hutch. He's top 5 as far as I'm concerned. Sewell, Gardner, Chase, St. Brown would be my top 4. I know that Wilson has had nothing for QBs throwing to him and he's quite a talent but how is he ranked ahead of St. Brown?

The Wolves are fun as hell to watch, defense first team that plays actual team ball but also has a ridiculously dynamic superstar with all sorts of swagger. Ant vs. Luka is going to be wild.
-
Hard for little guards to be highly successful in the league today. It's why I think it's possible that Dillingham and Sheppard slide down draft boards in favor of prospects with a better archetype like Buzelis/Holland etc.

Playoff games at Ford Field - Goff 2-0 and Stafford 0-1. The Rams can take their "Stafford" Field and shove it.

3 out of 4 home games with at Arizona sandwiched in between is a nice start to the schedule then comes the bye and straight into the meat grinder with road games against Dallas, Green Bay, Houston and Minny. Playing Chicago with a more experienced Caleb late in the season isn't great but it doesn't matter much anymore, the Lions are now for the first time in....well.... forever are good enough to beat anybody anywhere under any circumstance.
