.500 might have been a stretch, although that's what I was hoping for. But the Tigers are the 4th worst team in baseball and are only 4 games better than the worst team in baseball. Washington: 47-87 | .351 Pittsburgh: 49-84 | .368 Oakland: 50-85 | .370 Detroit: 51-83 | .381 .389 winning% is the magic number to avoid 100 losses.

How do we know if he was training or doing any kind of throwing or workout routine while he was gone? The assumption that he wouldn't be able to help us when he got back isn't exactly unfounded. Again, regardless of what the reason was.

It shouldn't be besides the point. What he did was grounds to void the contract, regardless of what the reason was.

Not necessary. They signed Norris.

I never had nor will I ever like interleague play. I'd rather have the mystery of two teams never facing each other in the World Series with nothing to prepare themselves for the other team's strengths and weaknesses. But I guess they can make more money this way.

It's not what Grossman is doing that's bothering me. It's Hinch's remarks about it.

James McCann was an All-Star for the White Sox, but reverted back with the Mets. There's also C.J. Cron, but you can cry small sample size on that one. EDIT: Just saw Cron's OPS was .894 for the Tigers. I remember it being much lower.

Hinch made the statement that they need to get better in this area, implying that they didn't have the means to fix Grossman.

He played before my time, but I was looking at his stats and it's interesting that he was playing right between the last two Tigers World Series. He made his ML debut in Kaline's last year and left the Tigers the year before they won the '84 WS.

The new market inefficiency: grab players that the Tigers have ruined and revert them back to the hitter they used to be.

I remember how bad the offense was in 02-03. I can't believe it's even worse this year.

This right here. You can have all the fancy equipment and up to date stats and data available, but without proper communication from the front office to the hitting coach to the players, it's all useless. This is one of the reasons why I want them to do a clean slate. Fire Hinch and all the coaches and start over. New GM and front office and new field manager and coaches. What they have right now isn't working.

Typical Chris Ilitch, shifting responsibility to someone else. He doesn't know who to hire for GM, so he's letting Hinch do it.
-
That was the point of my comment. We judge managers based on their W/L records even though it's the players that determine the outcome. Hinch's reputation is solely based on how well he did in Houston. Take that away and just focus on what he has done in Arizona and Detroit. Would you believe he was capable of winning 100 games? Take a look at Torre's career. Would you believe he could win a bunch of World Series before going to New York? Managers are the most overrated part of the team and easily the most replaceable. Get a guy in there who isn't entirely incompetent and they'll win if you give them the talent.
-
Torre was a complete failure of a manager until he got to New York. Sure, he had a few winning seasons, but never won 90+ games. Hinch was a failure in Arizona and is currently a failure in Detroit. If you have good enough players on the team, the manager becomes less important. A manager would really have to screw up hard to turn good talent into bottom feeders. No manager can turn a low talent team into a winning team.
-
The fact that he's available now and cheap makes him an attractive option. Sure, ideally I'd want a 27-29 year old all-star, but I don't think that's gonna happen. They could cut Candelario now and plug Andrus in there and immediately be better. He could easily be a good fit for the bench if nothing else. I want to move on from some of these players and this could be a good place to start. Of course he isn't going to be a long-term option, but I don't think either Schoop or Candelario are long-term options either.

He's hitting better than Schoop and will only cost the league minimum.

He complained about the dimensions of Comerica Park, so maybe he was intentionally tanking so they'd get rid of him. He likely didn't like playing in Detroit, either because of the park, the manager, or the fact the Tigers weren't in contention (or something else entirely).

Did they seriously release him as I was typing that out? Ok, sign him now and see if he's worth keeping for next year.

I could see him getting close to $20 million/year as well. I'd like to see them get someone like Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who the Yankees got last year. But they'll likely have to make a trade, as I don't see anyone on the FA market that fits the bill. They're either really expensive (Swanson, Turner, Correa, Bogaerts) or washed up/utility players. I could see Oakland not picking up Elvis Andrus' option, but his defense has really gone south. If they really want to rid themselves of Schoop, they either have to spend a lot of money or go the trade route.

Given his age, I highly doubt his elite defense is sustainable.

They can always release him and eat the salary. It's not an ideal move, but sometimes that's what you have to do in order to move forward.
