McCoskey (paywalled article) lists Meadows, Wenceel, Bergner and Gipson-Long as "on the bubble" to be protected from rule 5. He protects Kreidler and Olson....leaves Lipcius, DeLa Rosa and Hess out in the cold.
I would definitely put Meadows and Wenceel on the 40 man along with Kreidler and Olson.
He was traded right before the start of the 1984 season...along with Glenn Wilson...to Philadelphia for Bergman and Willie Hernandez. That trade was the final piece of the puzzle (along with Evans as a FA) in making the Tigers WS champs
Both Shelton and Boesch had two productive seasons in Detroit. Be great if Carpenter surpassed that...but I'd be ecstatic to get those results from a 19th round pick
Pronman listed Edvinsson as one of the tournament's disappointments while noting that he was injured pre tournament and had food poisoning during it.
Whatever....
Jobe threw close to 48 pitches in 1.2 innings. Gave up a run one one hit...but three walks to go with three K's. Sounds like he was getting a lot of movement...but didn't have much command. Not too surprising for a 19 year old.
On a happier note...Sequera hit his 17th HR. Not bad for a 19 year-old
You can't run Miggy out there next year...he's shot. If he insists on coming back...stick him on the 60 day DL...his knee appears to be made of wet cardboard now, so I think it will be viewed as legit. If he plays along nice, bring him back in Sept for a farewell tour. If he starts griping...bring off the DL and DFA him.
The most depressing aspect re this team....Harold Castro and Riley Greene are the only two position players I would want to play next year. The rest...including Baez...can hit the tape
Dingler and Crouch should be moved up a level each...and maybe Wenceel. Sad that you really can't find position players beyond those guys that warrant it right now.
I sure do hope they can fix Tork. Missing on 1:1 can really F up your rebuilding timeline
Andrew Miller was a unicorn...a middle reliever who could completely shut a team down for multiple innings and close it out if need be. Had we signed him as a FA in 2010 or 2014 when he was available, we might have one a World Series or two.
Hire Epstein or that Houston fella..Lubnow? Let them sort out who stays and who goes
Saw some Jobe footage on twitter last week...frustrated and beset by fielding issues (familiar theme organizationally) he hulked up and blew a couple of fastballs by hitters...he also threw a coupe of sliders that looked ignorant of the laws of physics. The team has a recent history of drafting pitchers who get hurt...dating back into the 90's at least...before or shortly after they make the squad Could Jobe join Verlander and Porcello as injury free pitching prospects?
His BA last year at Toledo and Erie wasn't tht great..He did a lot of damage when he made contact though and he walked a lot. Maybe they should have started him in Toledo to get things going and take the pressure off of him but hindsight is 20/20
Al Al is every bit the guy at the Politburo who rises in the party because he toiled loyally at the tractor factory for decades and rose within the party because he outlasted everyone else
Pablo Picasso was never called an asshole...
Re the trade...maybe Husker Du and Weezer will see enough of a drop off moving to Calgary that we can sign one or both of them cheap when they hit FA
Depends on what I gotta spend to keep Larkin...but I'm inclined to say yes. If it comes down to keeping him over Bert...dump Bert. It if comes down to keeping him over Larkin...that's a tough one
