Al Avila: “You’ve got to go full bore from Day 1"
gkelly replied to Useful Idiot's topic in Detroit Tigers
I am really surprised N. Carolina doesn't have a franchise. The Raleigh area has over 2 million people and Charlotte has around 2.5 million. Both are really beautiful areas and growing quickly. It's at least a 4 hour drive from Charlotte to Atlanta or Raleigh to DC. I can't see the Tigers moving out of Detroit, and I think Oakland, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and Tampa Bay are much better candidates to move. Oakland isn't even going to get to 700k attendance this season. Detroit is 21st out of 30 in attendance. In 2016, the last time they fielded a decent team, they were 13 and in 2014, they were 7th overall in attendance. They reached 3 million in 2013. The fans go to the game as long as there is a decent product on the field. You put a garbage team out there, and regardless of the location, people aren't going to attend the games. -
Methinks Hinch's reputation as a solid manager has more to do with garbage cans than anything else.

It's almost like Avila just wanted to get rid of Fulmer; it seems like such a little return for someone who could really help a playoff team. Fulmer is a legit late inning arm. I am also glad that Avila didn't trade any of the other pieces from the bullpen because it would have just been giving guys away for nothing. This is the house that Avila has constructed: Probably the worst starting nine (DH included) in MLB. Two #1 overall picks and neither one looks to be anything special (I know Torkelson is young but he looked completely overmatched this season). An overachieving starting rotation...a very good bullpen. A minor league system devoid of legit prospects. It's silly to be mad at Avila. He's already proven that he can't run a franchise successfully. It's not his fault that he is still employed.

He fits in with over half the players in the organization with that slash line.

I have a bad feeling that Mize will only turn out to be a middling starter and Torkelson will be a bust. Ugh. I feel the Avila regime drafts will not produce many above average MLBers.

Methinks there is probably something going on here other than a marital issue. One could conjecture that there is something illegal going on back in Venezuela
-
Those guys have done it longer.

I don't know about top 10 but he is definitely one of the top 30 or so offensive players of all time for sure as it is.
-
Anybody who is competent in the majors should be considered a success regardless of where they were drafted. i.e. Beau Briske.
-
We will miss him when he is gone after next season. Truly one of the greatest players in the history of MLB (same with Pujols). As of this moment, they are the two greatest players of this generation. This year he is the heaviest strictly singles hitter in history.
-
He looks overmatched by MLB pitchers. Who knows what will happen in the future, but he needs to turn it around or he will be a huge bust.

Candelario is as good as gone at the end of the year. It doesn't even matter who they put there, it will be an upgrade.
-
It would be nice to call up a guy from the minors and just have them be able to hit at least league average with average power. How can you have a rebuild going on for 6 or 7 years, trade away a bunch of all stars for prospects, draft in the top 10 every year, and end up with no players that would start on basically any other team?
-
I don't believe this qualifies as alliteration. I believe his last name is pronounced Young; although, if I am incorrect on the pronunciation, I apologize.
-
The Tigers should try to get Andujar from the Yankees. He would easily be the best hitter in the organization as soon as the deal was done.
-
I thin Alex Bregman deserves consideration. Trevor Bauer is technically still in the league.
-
Well, Avila has been GM since 2015, so it seems like there really isn't anything a person can do to get fired around here. Results obviously do not matter.

No one is more delusional in all of sports than Detroit Lions fans. I don't know about baseball, but I remember at the beginning of the year hearing Tigers fans talk about how Mize, Skubal, and Manning were all aces and were going to compete for the Cy Young. Torkelson and Greene were going to run away with the ROY voting. Torkelson would be in consideration for the MVP...
-
How can they score a routine grounder that went through Candelario's legs a hit? That's just ridiculous.

Great bullpen and some overachieving starting pitchers. Eric Haase is really the only Tiger who hits the ball regularly with authority. It didn't look good for the Tigers at the beginning of they year, but they are even worse at hitting major league pitching than I thought they would be. Next year isn't going to be any better.
-
No way Baez moves to 2nd base. He wouldn't be on board with that. No one in the Tigers organization would have the balls to make the decision or to tell Baez that they are moving him to 2nd base. This is the worst hitting Tigers team I can remember. The only player on the Tigers that regularly hits the ball with authority is Eric Haase. The Tigers have the worst hitting catcher, 1st baseman, 2nd baseman, 3rd baseman, and collective outfield in the league. Cabrera is strictly a singles hitter, and Baez goes through long stretches of suckiness. If they don't make major changes next year, this team is going to be bottom of the barrel again next year.

These aren't anything close to the situation that Rodriguez is in. Luck quit because he was injured constantly and was sick of playing. He never ghosted his organization, and in fact let the owner know well in advance (even though it wasn't reported to the media at the time). Players quit football all the time because they don't want to be permanently injured. I have a feeling that there is something ominous about this.

I went to a game where there were probably only 3,000 in the stands. Bobby ran out to his left field position and threw a ball to a lady that he had been flirting with . He was busy checking her out when a ball was hit to him and he misjudged it. The guy ended up with a triple but Higgy didn't give a damn. It was funny because no one else in the ballpark (except the pitcher) cared either. It was also funny because when we went to get our tickets we asked for the cheapest tickets and they were like 6 bucks or something. And the guy said don't go sit in those seats though because they were in the upper level. We ended up sitting about 3 rows from the field.

...unless it's Candelario or Schoop.

Well, not like he has a long ways to go to match Torkelson. When you consider positions, Torkelson is the worst starting position player in MLB. Clemens will pass him in HR, RBI, AVG, OBP, and SLG.
