2023 Detroit Tigers Regular Season Discussion Thread
tiger2022 replied to oblong's topic in Detroit Tigers
Well, the Tigers do have 16 homers and only 10 behind the league average after 21 games. The team has a .211 BA, the worst in the league. A 603 OPS, the worst in the league. Two guys on the team that have more than 2 home runs. I would say this offense is just as bad as last season. First base and corner outfield positions are your power spots and they have 3 home runs combined. These guys suck. -

Rob Deer 1991, 25 hrs, .386 slg That was only 25 hrs, but yikes. Chris Davis, Khris Davis, Joey Gallo, Dave Kingman, Gorman Thomas were other guys that hit a lot of home runs but had very low .slg. -
Late to this topic, but I will claim Jonathan Schoop. I want to support a guy who gets released/DFA before May is over.

Remember how everybody blamed the reason why the hitters sucked on Scott Coolbaugh? I think the real reason the hitters suck is because they just suck. -

They might consider playing him in the outfield. Probably be in contention as the best hitter on the roster. -
The traditional Tigers road uniforms with Detroit in block letters are one of my favorites. I think the Spanish Tigres uniforms are pretty cool.

Putrid. Softball uniforms at best.

Hopefully whoever the DH is, he will be able to hit better than the guys Hinch has been penciling in at that position. -

Maybe I am pessimistic, but I really don't see Torkelson ever being anything more than a bad version of the San Diego era Eric Hosmer. I know they are still kids, but lots of guys that never found success in the majors were kids once too. It sucks too, because if these guys are busts, the Tigers will have to basically start from scratch again in a few years. -

Lots of reasons why baseball is dying out among kids in general. It's not a very exciting game to play compared to basketball or football. If you live in a city, baseball is tough to play just because of how much area it takes up while there are basketball hoops all over the place. It doesn't require the athleticism that other sports require, so it gets ignored. You don't get paid right away like basketball or football. There are plenty of other reasons, but baseball is now simply a sport that people in the Caribbean/Latin America and some parts of California/Florida and a few other states play. I can't remember the last time I saw kids playing baseball at a park or having a pick-up game. On a side note, I also think the pathetic results from the Tigers over the last 7 or 8 years also affects kids in the area wanting to play the game. When a team is as bad as the Tigers, many parents of young kids just don't follow baseball and in turn don't expose their kids to the game. I grew up in the 80s/90s, played 2 years in college, but just stopped following baseball because the Tigers were just so bad. It's really hard to care about an organization that doesn't value winning. I played catch with my son and threw batting practice when he was growing up, but he never was excited about the game and we never watched games together because the Tigers were so bad all those years. I have a feeling the Tigers are going to be bad for a long, long time. -

Sometimes it's hit em where they ain't, but if guys like Torkelson and Greene aren't driving the ball with authority, they will be out of the league in about 2 or 3 seasons. -

Good for Miggy, but it is kind of sad to see how one of the greatest players in our generation has fallen -
Crawford, Hill, Burrows, Manning, Faedo, Mize, Greene, Torkelson, Jobe, Jung. Those are the first picks from the last 10 drafts. That is a rough group (Jobe and Jung--too early to tell). For whatever reason, none of these guys have worked out so far. Pitchers are so injury prone and nowadays they only pitch 5 innings anyway. No more first basemen...they grow on trees. I think both positions are bad values. I would prefer to just pick shortstops or outfielders with the first pick.

This might be the most potent and feared Tigers lineup to appear this season. I am surprised they haven't exploded for at least 3 hits so far. -
Can we do after 10 games? Because I am feeling that the team isn't going to get any better anytime soon.

It is indeed. Everybody has anxiety, the difference is normal people have to just deal with it. They can't take years off from work because they just feel like it and expect their employer to just pay them. I feel bad for him but also see him as entitled at the same time because his anxiety over baseball seems so trivial compared to the anxiety that people in 3rd world countries feel 24/7 with just surviving. -

It feels like the early 90s all over again... Terrible roster construction. At least the pitching was serviceable to good last year. Not so much the beginning of this year. -
Week Eighteen: Detroit Lions (8-8) @ Green Bay Packers (8-8)
tiger2022 replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
It is completely irrelevant and pointless if the Lions win. Trying to keep the Packers out of the playoffs really doesn't matter one way or the other. No one who is a Lions fan will care one way or the other who wins this game by tomorrow afternoon. -
"Goff has been playing just as well as anyone in the league, and that includes Burrow, Allen, and Mahomes. " Perhaps if you re-read what I wrote, you will see I said he has been playing just as well. I don't want to make enemies on the board, but sometimes embellishing and exaggerating what other people post is kind of a "jerk move." But you do you. Guess the only way you can be considered a good QB is to run around and make sidearm throws. I don't recall ever seeing Joe Montana doing anything like that. The purpose of a QB is to make great decisions and deliver the ball to play makers. And 15 TDs to 0 INTs, well if that isn't good enough for some people, I guess you are just never happy.

Not that I have watched an NBA game in about 25 years but the home team free throw advantage is so ridiculous. -
I think the Bengals may be the team that ends up getting screwed the most. I believe they were going to beat the Bills and probably crush the Ravens this week. I also think the Raiders have a good chance of beating the Chiefs on Saturday. The Bengals would have been the #1 seed. Instead they will probably get the #3 seed now because they can't get as many wins as the Bills or Chiefs now.
