I think the only route for the Lions will be to draft an edge rusher with their top pick some kind of help in the defensive backfield or a WR with their other first round pick. I think Holmes has a lot higher IQ than Bob Quinn, so no TEs or RBs with first rounders (and no slow CB who played against lousy Big Ten WRs and QBs at #3). Positional value in the draft makes a lot of sense-Bob Quinn had no clue based on his draft picks. I have no idea why people want to replace Goff. Goff has been playing just as well as anyone in the league, and that includes Burrow, Allen, and Mahomes. He doesn't make the mistakes and turn the ball over like Stafford. I am not sure what else you want in a QB. He distributes the ball to the playmakers. And anyway, Stroud, Levis, and Richardson will be busts anyway. Young might be as good as Goff one day, but none of those guys are any sort of improvement over Goff.

Pujols years with the Cardinals stand with the greatest run of anyone ever in MLB history. Trout, while spectacular, isn't on the same level as Pujols for the first 10 or 12 years.

Like I said, he would be the best hitter in the Tigers organization the minute he steps on the field. The Tigers have the worst starting 1st baseman, 2nd baseman, and 3rd baseman in the majors. The starting catcher, outfielders, and DH (just because he has zero power) are all at the bottom. This is the worst Tiger's offensive team I have ever watched. The only 2 players that even hit the ball regularly with authority are Haase and Baez, and those guys sure do like to swing and miss a lot.

Drafting a catcher high in the first round is just such an awful use of a draft pick. It's such a taxing position that many teams want to move a great hitting catcher to 3rd base or something usually. I am also not a big fan of drafting a 1st baseman very high. Good hitting first basemen are everywhere and unless the guy you pick is going to be that much better than the other ones, it is a terrible pick. I know many of you think Torkelson is going to be a great hitter, but for using the top pick on him, he better be top 3 at his position starting very soon. I am not just saying this because Torkelson is struggling but it's just a bad use of capital at that spot. I know...I know...he was the consensus best pick in the draft so five or six posters don't need to point it out (even though some will). Also, they are locked into that position, so if there is someone decent ahead of him, there isn't a spot for both of them. Most aren't athletic or versatile enough to play other positions I prefer to target outfielders, shortstops, or college pitchers. You can never have enough pitching, and shortstops are usually able to play the other infield positions and can convert to outfield if needed. There is always room for more outfield bats.

If Abreu played every game against the Tigers, he would own every record in the book. That guy just destroys Tiger pitching.
-
Best at bat of the night for him for sure. It looked like Sousa was trying to go outside and just either missed too far over the plate or challenged him on the fly out.
-
MLB pitchers are going to make his life miserable until he does something about it. There is no reason to throw anything to him other than on the outside corner.
-
I think they strike out enough without any help.
-
Miguel still one of the smartest hitters in MLB history
-
If people on a message board can figure it out, I am pretty sure Torkelson should be able to figure it out too. I am not defending Coolbaugh because I have no idea what he does, but you really think this roster would be mashing on a nightly basis with a different hitting coach?
-
I have no idea what a MLB hitting coach does, but you would think that a #1 pick overall in the draft would have some kind of idea how to hit.
-
Torkelson is overmatched and outsmarted every at bat.
-
I am listening to the White Sox broadcast... "Not many players are going to strike out more than Javy Baez."
-
And that's why Willi gets playing time
-
Has to be the absolute worst 5-9 hitters in the league. None even close to .600 OPS. You know pitchers are praying that their day lands during the Tigers series.
-
Over under 4.5 hits tonight. I will go with the under.

Mize is having surgery for sure. But he doesn't need it, he just wants to take a year off.

The Tigers could trade any of the position players away and I would be cool with it, but I can't imagine there is a big market for any of those guys. The one player I would think about would be Soto; although, he really doesn't have a long track record, so I am not sure what the return would be. There are probably more reliable vets out there most teams would feel more comfortable with.
-
What are they really going to get for any of these bullpen arms? I can't imagine it's going to be something as valuable as what they are giving away. The bullpen is the only competent area that this organization has. Better to just keep them and hope to sign some free agents next year and hope that Torkelson and Greene can be at least average MLB hitters next year.

Wouldn't be the first time teams have used the IL to stash a player, but it seems as if any of these guys were really that impressive they would just play them. All these guys are fringe MLB players at best. If the Tigers lose any of these outfielders that wouldn't make any other team's roster, is it that big of a deal? It's not like the Tigers wouldn't be able to find other guys that can rack up a .550-.600 OPS or whatever they do.

I really don't think roster congestion is a big concern when it involves a bunch of players that can't hit. There really isn't any teams out there that are going to be beating down the door for a Detroit Tiger who can't crack this starting lineup. Not sure why the Tigers would trade any of their bullpen arms for simply an innings eater in this season.

It's only fair to give Avila credit for the pitching if he is going to take the blame for the offense.

Kudos to Al Avila. It is difficult to put together a roster where all 8 of the starting position players are bottom 5 in the league offensively at their position. The entire infield have BA's under .200 and OPS's under .600. 17 home runs from the starting infielders. And the strength of the offense...the outfield. Meadows, .322 SLG. Grossman .245 SLG, Hill .289 SLG, Badoo .220 SLG. Reyes is off to an okay start, but I don't expect him to sustain it. Maybe he proves me wrong. Barnhardt seems like a solid defensive catcher who would be fine if he were on a more capable offensive team, but he supplies very little offensively either. It's sad when your top offensive player is a 39 year old shell of his former self who can't get around on a fastball any longer and who many were hoping would retire after he got his 3,000th hit. Harold Castro is a great utility player. Someone asked why Willi Castro keeps getting chances, well, why not? He just turned 25 and who else can do anything with the bat outside of Miguel and Harold? He probably wouldn't be on any other MLB rosters, but he could be considered a stud on this roster. To be fair, the pitching staff is the only reason this team even has double digit wins. Skubal has emerged as the ace of the staff. Faedo and Brieske seem like they are middle of the rotation guys. I have never seen the appeal to Rodriguez other than a guy who can give you innings; although you can do a lot worse than him. Mize seemed like he was on his way to being a reliable if unremarkable starter. The bullpen has been the true strength of this team. Lange, Vest, Fulmer, Foley, Chafin, Jimenez, and even Soto have been top of the line. What would the record be without the bullpen. It's tough to contemplate how bad they would be. Guess that is my rant for the week, although I'm pretty sure every one already knew all this.

Ever think maybe the players just suck? That seems like a pretty good theory to me. Reyes, Torkelson, Hill, Badoo, Clemens, and Haase would find it really difficult to make almost any other MLB roster. Baez is uncoachable, the Castros are utility players (they are hitting at least decently). Grossman was never a great hitter but isn't hitting for average since he tries to hit home runs now. Barnhardt was never some stud hitter anyway. What hitting coach is going to have these guys up there even in the .240s? I'm not defending Coolbaugh because I have no idea what he even does with the players, but I just don't think a lot of these guys would be on the roster of most MLB teams.

The only thing I know about Coolbaugh is I had his baseball card and thought he had a great last name.
