  1. The people I grew up with in NH were mostly traditional conservatives. When they said they wanted government out, they meant it-and would take it upon themselves to make sure those who needed help got it from other community members. And religion was a private, personal subject that you only discussed in church. So we didn't agree on how to accomplish some things, but we often wanted the same things.
  2. Something tells me that chart is only telling a small part of the story.
  3. While I am no longer Catholic, the events of the past couple of weeks have reminded me of some of the things I liked about it. I wonder if this will cause lapsed Catholics to take another look?
  4. I'm once again following White Stars, Black Sea, which has Titanic month every April. I also re-watch A Night to Remember.
  5. IIRC there were those in the 90s who argued that global warming was good for the economy. Hmm, now I'll have to look. I remember corporate apologist Jacoby wrote about this (was with The Boston Globe at the time), but I'm guessing he got the idea from somebody else.
  6. My guess is that the doc would like to sell the teenage girls into marriages, and then they'd have a baby a year until they either died in childbirth or went into menopause.
  7. Looking for suggestions on Irish history/oppression-preferably from the Irish point of view. Anyone have any?
  8. He is handsome and he KNOWS it. Congratulations!
  9. UGH. There isn't a word vile enough to describe how much I detest this, this.... whatever he is.
  10. He must have seen The Money Pit....
  11. If nothing happens the Golden Idol will claim it's because he prevented it by some powerful action of his.
  12. So he's Muslim now?
  13. There is still a lot of anti-Catholic sentiment out there, it would seem. Even though I no longer consider myself a Catholic this is more than a little upsetting.
  14. FYI, the FB page White Stars, Black Sea is doing its annual Titanic month. It's quite interesting.
  15. Yeah, I think it and Born in the USA were both a bit overplayed even though I still like both of them. I've always had a special place in my heart for Badlands and Hungry Heart, though in recent years I've grown to like Streets of Philadelphia (even if the song at the end of the movie IS even better) and My Hometown. Maybe it's because I have so many relatives from NJ? 😉
  16. Man, that sucks. I definitely would never want to go back to high school.
  17. His status as an 'outsider' was also too extreme. Many Democratic leaders found him to be unlikable, so they chose not to work with him. Many of these so called liberals ended up cozying up to Reagan. I always thought it was his handling of the hostage crisis that put the final nail in his presidency's coffin, though.
  18. Let's not forget that he turned the thermostats in the WH down to 68 degrees and wore sweaters to keep warm. I seem to remember a Playboy interview that was pretty controversial at the time, too.
  19. That was Jimmy Carter in the late 70s.... imagine if we'd kept up his energy policies instead of having them actively reversed. While far from perfect, Carter's administration had a lot of really great research not only in energy, but in agriculture as well.
  20. Lack of experience isn't even close to his worst trait. In addition to his sexual assault comments, he also had a number of racist comments. And called people of Maine stupid. He sounds like a real pearl of a human being. And I wouldn't be surprised if he does turn out to be a Nazi. I suspect people like him for 'personality reasons,' which is more than a bit concerning. I'm disappointed that my Senator has endorsed him. Is there really nobody in Maine willing to step up who has progressive views without this kind of history? And shouldn't we asking for representatives who don't have this kind of history? I definitely like Mills better. Come to think of it, I like Collins better, too.
  21. Ultimately, rich Democrats want the same thing rich Republicans want: lower taxes. And since many of the ones in power probably think they'll be unaffected by the worst of the current regime's policies, they're not all that concerned about anything else. They're just more likely to leave a few breadcrumbs for the rest of us.
  22. They're part of the Quiverfull movement. And yes, it's creepy.
  23. I don't even wait-when you're famous they let you do it!
  24. True. And unfortunately sensationalism sells-especially when a megalomaniac is at the center.
