Week Seven: Detroit Lions (4-1) @ Minnesota Vikings (5-0)
Jimbo replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
If it wasn't for the constant texting I do with friends, I might do the same thing because these political adds are ridiculous. I think there were 7 in a row at one point. -
Go get a DE. I am good with two 1rst for Garrett or Crosby. If they can't get them then I would be good with a player like Smith although I then want them to get another LB/DE as well. Paschal can't stay healthy and Malcolm has been great but I want to add some depth there as well. This team is not like SF and they have a small window for the SB although I don't feel like trading draft picks now will shorten the window. Go for the SB.

Week Eight: Tennessee Titans (1-5) @ Detroit Lions (5-1)
Jimbo replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
This is a good in between game for the Lions. They definitely shouldn't sleep on the Titans although if Monty or other important players have injury concerns, get them rest. After this we have two brutal away games. After the bye I would of been happy if they went 3-2. Now if we can win either at GB or Houston and its a very successful 5 games. GB game obviously more important because of it being a divisional game. Or why not just win both of them. -
The reason for all the talk for certain teams is that these teams are sellers. I actually think if I was either the Raiders or the Browns I would trade both Garret and Crosby for a draft hall. I actually think Dallas should be and should trade Parsons but we all know Jones wouldn't and still thinks they are a SB team. If they (Crosby and Garret) were younger, its a different story because they will be in their prime when the team hopefully gets better. Especially the Browns since they need cheep assets because of Watson's contract. All is speculation because you really don't know if the Lions even want to do that type of trade as well. Although its fun speculation. Cincy is in a different situation because they are in a win now mode. So unless they lose 2 out of the next 3 I don't see them being sellers. That team feels like they can go on a hot streak. I think Cincy is in a similar situation that the Jets were and is why they ended up being buyers. There are so many situations of teams making quick turnarounds with big trades that brings them trade assets. The Lions being one of them. You need to have a good GM though to make that turnaround.

Yeah if were not taking on Watson's contract. We would need Garret and multiple draft picks

Week Seven: Detroit Lions (4-1) @ Minnesota Vikings (5-0)

This is a game where Glenn needs to prove he is a good defensive coordinator. Without Hutch you have to get creative and do what Johnson has done on the offensive side of the ball. Darnold has had a great year although the second half against the Jets wasn't great and they almost blew their lead. JJ always torches us but hopefully they can do what they did against Lamb. -
The more I think about it, I want to have Crosby here. This team is ready for a super bowl. Now we are in a way better situation than the Rams were 3 years ago. It won't be trading your future for the chance at one championship. I feel like a trade like this, you are trading away your future 4 years from now and I am good with that. Unless you have Brady or Mahomes its not easy to be a super bowl contender for 10 years. We finally have a good GM, so after their run, I am confident it will be a quick retooling. He has also done a great job with later draft picks. Hutch isn't getting replaced BTW, there has been talk about getting Crosby for over a year. Every good/great team has to make hard decisions when it comes to the CAP and we are no different. Luckily we haven't had to make those tough decisions yet because we were in such a great CAP situation. You have no idea what kind of CAP situation the league will be in when we have to make those tough decisions. I will trust whatever decision Holmes makes although I just feel like Crosby would fit in perfectly with this team.
-
If you want a good comparison for what Crosby would cost you should look at the Mack trade in 2018. BTW Mack was the same age (27) at the time of the trade. Big difference is Mack had a contract dispute which Crosby does not. Raiders received 2 1rsts, 3rd, and 6th Bears received Mack, 2nd, and conditional 5th
-
Only way I see it happening is if Crosby actually said he wants to get traded. So far he has said the complete opposite. Although maybe the Adams trade and constant losing will change his tune. He wouldn't look bad and the franchise would probably accommodate him. Problem is, we won't be the only team that will want him and it will be a bidding war. Unless he quietly tells organization that he is willing to get traded if its to Detroit.
-
Are the Raiders in sell mode or just happy to get rid of Adam's contract? 1rs, 2nd next year, and Houston for Max.....get ur done

If Patrick can stay healthy this will be a very good signing. He's got some size and speed. That first catch shows he's got some good hands as well. Its good because they are going to have to focus on Defense at the trade deadline.

Week Six: Detroit Lions (3-1) @ Dallas Cowboys (3-2)
Jimbo replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
I wanted them to explore trades for DE's before Hutch's injury. They are going to do something. Don't expect it to be anything big until closer to the deadline. There are options out there but I don't think its going to be a huge trade. Looks like 3 more games before the deadline and you will know more of who will be sellers. -
I really don't like the comparison for teams each week in the NFL. I think its a bad way to explain how good an offense or defense is. This year is even worse for that. I just don't think you can say the Lions defense is terrible because Giants held Seattle to only 20 points and they got 29 on us. BTW, its not like were talking about 20 points (its only 9 more points). There are only so many factors each week. One thing to consider is it was a short week for Seattle. Another is not bringing your A game against a bad Giants team (without Nabers). So many factors that you can't just say its because of this 1 thing (Glenn is terrible). This has always been a factor in the NFL although I think this year has been crazy with unpredictable games. One a different note. I am curious how good everyone thinks both Minnesota and Washington are. Are either team (or both) a wild card team, division winner, or super bowl contender? I wouldn't be surprised if both teams with their division but don't make it to the NFC championship (they both have pretty good schedules outside of their division). I think we have a better chance of winning the division than Philly or Dallas although its going to be tough. We have some tough road games coming up. That last game of the year could be the deciding factor. Green bay still could make a push as well. Washington could have the best shot at getting the best record in the NFC because I think we are going to beat each other up in our division. Next week is a good test for them against Balt.

The bye week is usually a bummer although now that we have the Tigers its not going to seem so long. I wonder how many Lions will attend these games. Seems like a lot of the players are pumped with them.

Week Four: Seattle Seahawks (3-0) @ Detroit Lions (2-1)
Jimbo replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
This is the NFL and it tries to change the rules to increase scoring each year (with safety as its reason). The rule change could explain the issues with tackling this year (with some other things they need to fix). Every team needs to adjust. I know the posters on here are fans of the Lions and are going to focus on what the Lions have done good and what looks bad. I think the secondary is A LOT better this year. This year we are getting way too many penalties but they are right there with the receivers. Last year with the big plays against us, the corners were not even close to the receivers on the big plays. Similar to what some of the plays against Seattle looked like. How many times last year with a big play against us, was Sutton 5-10 yards from the play. If they can improve on the penalties, then we will be fine. When you shut down the run game, your going to get a lot more passes thrown your way. The fact is when you get 56 passes thrown and with a big receiver like Metcalf, you need to be physical. There were a couple of plays that Metcalf looked like he was boxing out for a rebound. How do you defend that when the ref doesn't call it the other way. They need to improve but those that say the secondary hasn't gotten better is just wrong. You can be critical although saying we haven't gotten better is just wrong. -

I think its OK to call out your coaches regardless of if they are winning or not. Its part of being a fan. Although some of the comments on here are hilarious. Its like they watch another game and find something that is better than what the Lions are doing (and its never apples to apples comparison) in certain situations and come unglued. I just think Lions fans have been abused so much, they have this negative mechanism to make them make truly ridiculous statements. Arnold is not better than Okudah, the Lions coaches are terrible, trade Goff.....etc. Its OK to make observations and then make a comment without going scorch the earth. For instance......I have noticed that this year, tackling has not been good. Not sure if its a coaching thing, being too aggressive, bad angles, or a combination of things. Its noticeable because that to me has been one of the biggest improvements with this regime. I am concerned although its early in a long season. I would be very arrogant if I said its for sure coaching. A team does not make a straight line from one of the worst teams in football to the Superbowl. There are usually (notice I said usually because there are always exceptions) bumps along the road. Last year had plenty of bumps and we were one or two plays from making the superbowl. And if we don't make it that far this year, its not because horrible coaching or terrible draft picks (specifically Arnold). It usually can equate to multiple things. Relax, its a long season. I think 3-1 at this point is about what I figured we would be. The next 5 games are going to be tough, so don't be surprised if we're 6-3 or 5-4. Doesn't mean we won't win the division or make the playoffs. Minnesota looks like the team to beat in the division (at this point in the season) and maybe the NFC although I am curious how they look halfway through the season. I know its the NFL, but lets see when teams start to really take them serious (similar to our bad stretch last year). -

This is an important game. They come back from the bye week and have 4 out of 5 road games against very tough teams. Its been a different NFL season so far and very difficult to predict who is truly a playoff team. There are going to be a lot of Lions fans that are going to have to see a therapist lol. -
I know the windows in the NFL are smaller unless you have a great QB although I think this team is different because of how young we are and how good our GM is. At the trade deadline is one thing but I don't seem Holmes making trades for players for early draft picks at this point in the season. We are in win now mode but we can be in win now for the next 4-5 years or more. These injuries are tough although this is the NFL and most teams have to deal with them. Were not making any major trades (and really either is Cincy) this early in the season.
-
Its actually rare to have any major trades happen this early in the season. GM's want to first see if their depth can replace any injured players. Especially with this team, draft picks are way too important to not be patient. Also teams that are 0-3 are not ready to give up on their season. Only trades you see happen this early are when both teams think they are getting better.

Does a medical retirement cost against the cap?

Week One: Los Angeles Rams (0-0) @ Detroit Lions (0-0)
Jimbo replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
I think the defense played good. You really can't complain too much when an NFL team only scores 20 points. The issue I had with the defense is the miss tackles. This is actually something the Lions have been very good with since Campbell has been coach. So unless this becomes a season issue, I think their defense will be fine. They definitely were playing bend but don't break. They were willing to give the short passes to prevent from the big plays. As the Rams got to the red zone, the defense tightened up. From a pure strategy standpoint, you go in happy if you can hold the Rams to 20 points. -
Week One: Los Angeles Rams (0-0) @ Detroit Lions (0-0)

This felt a lot like the first game last year against KC. Definitely less impressive since it was at home and not against the Superbowl champions. The Chiefs were missing some significant players. The Lions looked like in both games that they didn't play anybody in preseason. Even though they didn't look great, they still came out with a W. BTW I agree with the preseason decision. Its a long season and less chances for injuries even if it means they come out rusty. The miss tackles were very frustrating (and felt a little SOL) because since Campbell has been coach, they have really cleaned that up. Secondary did not look great. Hoping its a fact that besides a few guys, its a whole new group of guys that need to jell. Actually the whole defense has a lot of new faces. I will say that Stafford looked great and played a really great game (minus redzone interception). Especially with OL issues and Nakua going down. There is going to be some comments on how Brown and LaPorta didn't get enough looks or balls thrown their way. I think this was Johnson trying to get Jamo confidence (and Goff confidence in him) and I think he succeeded in that. A lot to clean up and work on. -

Worthy reminds me a lot of Jamo. Can't wait to see how Jamo looks on Sunday and hope he can finally justify that 12th pick. I really wonder what time he would of run at the combine and if it would of been around the same time Worthy ran. From game speed I think it would of been close. -

Your telling me that if we were in a close playoff series, JV wouldn't get booed? I strongly disagree. Tigers fans love JV. He will be beloved as much as other Tiger greats. Although for that series he would definitely get booed. Maybe not as much as Stafford because the situation is different. -

Lets not forget, there was a very loud group of Lions fans that became Ram's fans the year they won the championship. So a lot of fans have a place in their heart for him. Just not when the Lions are good. That takes priority. Not sure if it mattered although if it got in Stafford's head at all during the playoff game then you should make noise or boo (whatever you want) for your team. That is what home field advantage is all about.
