I would guess the 'agnostic' designation includes a lot of folks who grew in some religious doctrinal system, reached a point (for a wide variety of reasons) where they no longer accept any of the received doctrine, but still have the sense that they don't understand existence at any fundamental level and are left in a state of irresolution. I think that's quite a bit different from a person who has come to a positively objectivist view that nothing they can't see can exist. I think the big shift in the works is that as attendance at Churhes fall, fewer people are getting that doctrinal education in the first place and their agnosticism is even more ...diffuse (for lack of better word). 🕉️

The thing I don't get is how the people running the programs in college football resolve the basic contradiction. If you have go out and raise a ton of outside money to be competitive, what makes anyone think the enterprise is ever going to be profitable for the institution? They are all in an arms race where the income never catches up to the outgo. The only answer I've come up with is that the schools are being had. They are spending their own, their alum's and their student's money plus everyone else's they can fund raise from so that a bunch of other people - athletes (to whom the designation 'student' has never applied less), media, PE guys, coaches, can get rich. OK - I know it's not happening but I've never wished more my school would wake up and get off the treadmill that's only benefiting all the leeches out there.

I think there is probably a difference in the intellectual stance taken towards the deist world. For instance I would expect that your average agnostic probably doesn't care much about public displays of Christian culture in the surroundings, where someone who has come down definitively on the atheist side is more likely to be irritated, insulted and possibly litigious.

I'm with SF on this one. You seem to be focusing on "they get no respect because they are Detroit" but that's not the issue. Every athlete is more pumped to play better competition, the uniform and the city don't figure at all, 24-7 is all that figures. That's always the team you want to show you are better than.

Not at all, just talking players in general. The basic issue to me is that everything (for a position player) comes down to hitting, and to this day, projecting how guys are going to hit as they face progressively tougher pitching is the hardest thing to do, so it's natural that everything else which is easier to see tends to get a little more attention. There's no perfect MiLB metric for 'can you lay off Tarik Skubal's change down 0-2' until the guy gets himself into a position to have a chance to try to do it.
