  1. Granting that the practical effect of a lottery given the uncertainty with baseball draft picks is questionable, in theory if you make rebuilding more difficult, maybe teams in the position that the Tigers were in circa 2015 will think a little harder about their willingness to mortgage the future for one more try at the brass ring. IMO that is what puts teams a the kind of really deep hole the Tigers got into and those decisions were actually made long before the team was bad and trying to dig out.
  2. Prince Charles tests positive after seeing the Queen recently. He's getting desperate enough to try to kill the old bag now.
  3. Washtenaw County checks in at 103 cases and 0 deaths this morning - that is under 30/100K for the 1st time since October.
  4. yeah - lets see how well that statement ages.
  5. True, but the counter point would be that the Lion's run game suffered more from an OL that was not built to run block than the lack of a RB behind it.
  6. of course the value also depends on last change. You might line up differently home/road.
  7. it's was an odd symmetry that the Ilitchs ended up with Kenny Holland and Dave Dombrowski, who were both so dismissive the right/left balance of their teams in the two sports where it makes such a big difference. The lack of right side shots alone had to have been a big piece of the years of RW power play ineptitude.
  8. this from an Atlantic article a few yrs ago when the Russians moved into Donbass. There has been time enough that there has no-doubt been some shifting, but you see the basis of Putin channeling Hitler's Sudetenland ambitions.
  9. If you look at history, you could argue that as a practical matter, empires are too expensive to maintain over disaffected populations without chattel slavery or at least feudalism, it's what held up most empires. Short of enslavement, captive populations will not be economically vibrant given that their ambitions become so crimped. Of course Xi thinks he is clever enough to find the way around that - we'll see what Hong Kong looks like in another 10 yrs.
  10. River front is wasted on a stadium, plus it means you can only have road access on one side. Open/park/walkable spaces make for a better riverfront -- roads on all sides make better stadiums. But the big thing is that all the stadiums built in the 60's turned out to be terrible - the mulitpurpose idea was dominant then and all those parks were monstrosities. We'd have had to have torn it down by now, just like StL, Philly, Cinci, etc.
  11. there would have been a riverfront cookie cutter round stadium, which time would have proved to have been a terrible idea.
  12. How did anyone on the team miss getting it on the last round? Another example of Hronek not being able to catch anything.
  13. why do you want to be disadvantaged 60% of the game? Put your great offensive players together for the synergy, split your great defenders so each anchors a strong pairing.
  14. most likely this. Many truckers own their own rig and are independent operators. That still leaves the question of whose trailers they are pulling - though the lease charges on trailers are not very high and any operator would have connection to pick one up if it was worth it to him/her.
  15. If Edvinnsson is anything like Sieder is will be pretty nice to have one of them out there for 50 of every 60min.
  16. I agree he looks like he is progressing some, but of course you have to keep the opposition in perspective. Philly made everyone look good last night.
  17. Russians diplomats getting unusually nekulturney.
  18. The problem for us spectators in one of these episodes is that we can't know who is serious and who is posing. At this point Russia and the West are like two baboons approaching the water hole from opposite sides, howling and barring their teeth, both knowing that a big enough show might get them what they want without a fight, neither knowing if the other will actually fight over the right for the 1st drink or not. Basically nothing has changed in primate psychology for 10 million years. History does show that sometimes you have to act like a hawk to live like a dove. I remember in my youth there was big controversy over the MX missile in Europe. I was charged up about it, wrote all my congresscriters in opposition. So we built the missiles and in the end what we got was all the missiles removed. I remember Carl Levin wrote me a nice letter when it was over that said - politely "See, you could have trusted me on this....." And that's the other problem, trust in the wisdom of our own gov is lacking anymore, and sadly for pretty good reasons.
  19. Possible, but only assuming the anti-Trump sides loses that civil war. If non-Trumper candidates can't defeat the Trumpers in the primaries then no one will be putting 'the party went too far' into the past tense. Right anti-Trumpers winning primaries across the board is a pretty, pretty big IF. Trumpers appear to be in control of most state parties.
  20. limpet mine. preferably of Iranian manufacture purchased on the black market.
  21. I just mean that my recollection of that period was that as fans we knew pretty well that the offense was good and the pitching was terrible.
  22. Certainly a nice win, but when the Wings third line is skating circles around you, you are a really, truly, terribly, bad team. But, still, you gotta win the ones you should.
  23. yeah, he took about 40 seconds of that PP 1 against 5.
