You can't outright somebody during the offseason (except that short period right after the season before the 40 man roster is set) if they were added to the 40 man roster after August 15. So if you straight up add too many players, you won't be able to outright them and may have to trim somebody you don't want to when you add a free agent.

You still need guys you can outright for later additions. Englert is probably next on the chopping block. If you would have added Workman or Hicks at Englert's expense, you wouldn't have that option with them.
