  1. More gerrymandering means more districts where the only competitive race is who can out extreme the other in a primary. No thanks.
  2. The 40 man is going to be crowded; I don't know that he gets protected.
  3. The break-even rate for that situation is pretty low, though. I don't mind the aggression.
  4. A good dive into Alt National Park's blatant plagiarism. https://jjoycelynch.substack.com/p/the-alt-national-park-service-on?utm_campaign=posts-open-in-app&triedRedirect=true
  5. Tigers reply guys on twitter being used as an authoritative source is an absolute hoot.
  6. Midterms and some checks on this maniac's power can't come soon enough.
  7. My Occam's Razor guess is park effects/weather.
  8. Statistical bonuses are allotted based on % of that stat accumulated with each team. There's a minor bug in my table, but I will address that once Paddack or Montero hit their numbers. Postseason/award bonuses are allotted based on when they happen. The Tigers are on the hook for whatever percentage of the stat came with them. I found out last year, these are paid out at the end of the year, not when triggered, to avoid constant denominator changes.
  9. Tyler Owens released. Very likely procedural and he'll be re-signed. He's injured, so they couldn't outright him.
  10. Performance bonuses... These are apportioned based on which team the stats are accumulated if a player is traded midseason. 11. CBT Calculations, but a few things I don't know. I don't know the cash considerations that came with Morton. I just guessed $2M. Cot's assumes half the remaining, which is a bit more than that. The Astros sent cash with Montero when he was traded to the Braves. I have no idea if that automatically comes with; there was no mention of cash considerations in the trade. All other cash deals are assumed to be $100K. I don't know Geoff Hartlieb's salary, nor Codi Heuer. I assumed league min for Hartlieb, and $800k/$180k split for Heuer since he signed early in the offseason. I am assuming Sewald and Dobnak are bought out. Buyouts count toward current year luxury tax total. 12. Eh... there's attrition between now and October, so it's nice to stockpile as many as you can and have more to choose when setting the playoff roster. I'm of the believe a healthy SGL is better than all of the above and Paddack.
  13. Still short rest for him

  15. Before I post the results, I gathered the following for every major league reliever acquired in the week leading up to last year's deadline: Win Probability Added (WPA) before the trade. WPA for the acquiring team (regular season). Postseason WPA The Athletic's Trade Grade for that trade Ranked by postseason WPA, any guesses roughly what the leader's total ended up being? What about second place (a bit of a hint that the leader was something of an outlier). I'll post later tonight. Note, I focused on WPA because I really don't like WAR for relievers and wanted to look at how they affected the team's postseason fortunes.
  16. For a front office that is so tough to deal with, they sure made a lot of trades (8) with several different teams (7) leading up to the deadline.
  17. If there is a site these days that is going to cherry pick stats between Fangraphs, Baseball Reference, or the corpse of Sports Illustrated, I know which one I am going to be suspicious of.
  18. Existential sounding question... How do we know who is going to be a good reliever the next the next three months? There seems to be a lot of certainty in the ether for something that is inherently uncertain.
  19. Not necessarily...
  20. I think it was Keith Law who made the Hornsby comparison, not Longenhagen. He was mostly joking.
  21. Enns was a separate trade. Micah Ashman was traded for Morton and cash. Enns was traded for cash.
  22. I don't get the criticism here. Not counting Dobnak (that was a pure salary dump to balance the trade), the Tigers have added five pitchers to the mix. When your depth is ravaged*, that's a good thing. I much prefer that to putting all your eggs in one basket. And we are criticizing them for not giving up enough? I'm trying to figure that one out.
  23. What I like about Heuer and Sewald is they don't tie down a roster spot right now, but have upside. You can only carry 8 relievers, so bringing a couple guys in as options down the road is something you can afford to do when you have payroll flexibility and a large divisional lead.
  24. Seems to be the MO so far this week...
