  1. Also, if the bench was finalized by who stayed on the 40-man yesterday, pencil in Nevin and Maton too!
  2. Rank and file government employees are protected from political retaliation by civil service laws. There is some hyperbole here.
  3. How do we know the bench? That changes dozens of times over the course of the season anyways. So if a quality bench player is available for cheap later in the offseason, the Tigers should pass? The 40 man really isn't set. There's still more rounds of cuts. Also, take a dive into some advanced metrics and Ibanez as a starter may not seem so far-fetched.
  4. Kirk Gibson, Placido Polanco, Delmon Young... In case anybody else was curious.
  5. Meadows can refuse assignment (5+ years service time), so he may have just said "No, I'm not accepting an outright," even if the end state is free agency. Maybe they aren't letting him go, for reasons.
  6. Refuse assignment? No. Declare free agency? Yes. He will be gone. They likely didn't put him on waivers in time because Canha wasn't acquired til Saturday. What isn't mentioned in that transaction is Wingenter and Vasquez will be among the minor league free agent crop at the top of the hour.
  7. No it doesn't. He will be a free agent in 35 minutes.
  8. Oh, Baez and Kelly too. Kelly isn't necessarily a free agent if his is declined.
  9. No, it's a vote for a third party person.
  10. Reminder... 5pm today, you have to activate players from the 60-Day IL. With the addition of Canha, that would put the Tigers at 43. Also, minor league free agents become free agents at that time, so if there are any you plan on protecting from the Rule 5, today is the day to do that (Keider Montero?). Finally, new as of a couple years ago and more restrictive this year, the offseason domestic reserve list (basically, stateside minor leaguers not on the 40 man) drops from 180 to 175 tonight. I have the Tigers at 159 now with 15 who need to come off the minor league 60-day IL, but 27 stateside free agents. So ending the day at 147 plus any outrights who join the mix. All this is to say, expect some moves today: Will Montero be added? Who will be among the 3+ dropped from the 40-man? Will the Tigers use some of their minor league roster flexibility to acquire some prospects from teams in a crunch? Maybe we see a waiver claim or a back-of-the roster trade today.
  11. I mean... Canha was one of the best 10 or so position players projected on the free agent market. It's thin out there. And while I have urged caution on looking at Toledo's numbers, the lineup there was formidable down the stretch. It is not unreasonable to expect reinforcements internally.
  12. He's on track to make 1.7M per MLBTR... So about twice the minimum. I don't mind keeping somebody like that in AAA if you need him. Also, stuff happens. Greene has a setback, Parker Meadows doesn't hit, somebody else gets hurt, and he's there. It's better than having to go get Jake Marisnick again. p.s. As for Super 2. Anybody with three years of more of service time are arbitration eligible. Effectively, everybody between 2 and 3 is ranked by service time (counted to the day) and the top 22% of them are eligible for arbitration. Arbitration just means the player can negotiate their salary. Yes, you can non-tender (not offer), but somebody like Baddoo is a worth a lot more than what he'll get in arb on the free agent market.
  13. Nothing stops you from optioning an arb guy to the minors.
  14. Your package for Tatis is going to be something like Greene, Jobe, Keith plus a couple low level guys.
  15. .310 this year isn't great, but it's only slightly below average (League average this year was .320). As a reserve/break-glass-in-case-of-emergency type you can do worse, and he's not priced in such a way that you don't keep him around and make sure he doesn't have more in the tank. Worth the offseason roster spot, worth the flier.
  16. I don't see why you let Baddoo go. Maybe there's a trade partner, but he's still a 25 year old with a decent track record that you can stash in Toledo if you need. MLBTR has him around $1.7M through arbitration. Worth keeping around.
  17. He didn't talk ****. He confirmed they confirmation of Michigan cheating and it got aggregated. And that cheating gave them an advantage because so much practice time this week had to go toward changing up signals on a team that has already been decimated by injuries. He said what the other 12 coaches in the conference are thinking.
  18. The blow by that cheating Jim deserved in his final game coaching.
  19. TJ for position players is not what it is for pitchers. Non-throwing arm helps too.
  20. FYI, if you hear the name Burhenn, there is a relation between Purdue's TE2 and the Tigers pitching prospect.
  21. Anyways, good job identifying a useful player before he hits free agency, taking on a contract another team was unwilling to play. He's a good fit with all the LHH outfielders on this club, even if not an every-day player. If they wait until free agency, he is likely demanding a multi-year deal. Now you get him for one year, 11.5M. A bit pricey for a 400-PA guy, but a good fit.
  22. Hard not to like that one. I'll just share my tweet here after looking up his contract status.
