  1. He's not being stretched out. He's opening. Bullpen day in Erie.
  2. Bonuses were skyrocketing after WWII, and owners implemented various bonus rules to reign them in. Bonus babies were a result of that, e.g. Al Kaline. So yes, the Yankees and Cardinals were hoarding but it was mostly money because this limited the amount those rich teams could spend. Once the Bonus Baby system fell apart, the draft came in, again completely stripping leverage from the players. Its main goal was to suppress bonuses.
  3. What do you know about systems that predated the draft and how amateurs were signed then?
  4. The #1 pick is still in play as long as there is a lottery... So if the Tigers go on a heater and finish 12th from the bottom, it is theoretically possible the 6 teams worse that didn't make the playoffs jump them in the lottery, thus 18th is on the table.
  5. Well an increase in the last couple years could be because capping the amount of pitchers on the roster has mandated the removal of the 2 or 3 person bench that had become way too pervasive.
  6. Unfortunately if you consider the source, I don't necessarily know if this means anything.
  7. Nope, the main purpose of the draft has always been to suppress bonuses. Lee is right.
  8. FWIW, if the Tigers get another lottery pick next year, they are ineligible to go higher than 10th in 2025. This is true of the Nationals this year, so their awful season will not be rewarded with a high pick next year.
  9. Don't forget the draft lottery. There is no "Currently at the #6 spot."
  10. If platoons and mixing/matching have increased in recent years, there are two contributing factors: Teams are better able to parse matchup data using meaningful inputs. Not "x batter is 3 for 5 against y pitcher," but "The swing path of x batter is compatible against the pitch shape of pitcher y." Also, L/L splits tend to be extreme. If you want the same lineup and order against LHP and RHP, that is ineffective. Teams know better about the importance of rest, and may be able to use biomechanics/analytics to know when players need a day off to recharge or reduce injury risk.
  11. Is Chapman? I mean I am aware of his defensive track record, but he is also going to be signing this contract on the wrong side of 30. A player whose value is mostly derived from defense tends to lose that value past 30 and you are left with a no-hit 1B. See: Moustakas, Mike. Chapman is slashing .228/.321/.432 since 2020.
  12. Does it make sense to sign a veteran free agent to a long term deal when you have a Top 20ish prospect at that position knocking on the door?
  13. A question was asked of me: "Why did the Tigers not do this with Javier Baez and see if there are any takers?" You can't waive somebody with any degree of no-trade protection without their consent.
  14. No more waiver deals. Those have been gone for a few years. Those used to have revocable waivers where you would put your whole team on waivers and just pull then back if claimed. Now, if one of these players is claimed, the contract and player go to the claimed team. But teams are under no obligation to release or outright a player if they clear waivers. They can just keep them; they are just securing waivers. It is really a way to clear some salary and give players a chance to maybe go to a contender.
  15. A claim on waivers means they pick up the rest of his salary, which isn't much. If he goes unclaimed, they don't have to outright or release him.
  16. It's Top 100 over the upcoming offseason, which, hey, he may be if he keeps it up in the bigs.
  17. Speaking of things drag queens in Jacksonville are blamed for... https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/crime/2021/07/16/former-pastor-chets-creek-church-arrested-molestation-charges/7991864002/ https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/crime/2022/05/27/southern-baptist-sex-abuse-list-includes-jacksonville-area-ministers/9942908002/ https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/crime/2021/04/17/jacksonville-pastor-arrested-accused-molesting-child-under-12/7267500002/ https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/local/2020/03/02/head-of-jacksonville-ministry-for-homeless-arrested-in-sexual-battery/112242906/ https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/crime/2018/08/07/jacksonville-bible-school-teacher-arrested-in-lewd-acts-with-girl-in-church/11018468007/
  18. The person who called him a scumbag in a presser today
  19. A nazi shot up a Dollar General in a predominantly black part of town today in Jacksonville. Ignore the invasive ad. If the local Newspaper on a Gannett budget can dig up the second paragraph, that isn't too cumbersome for any reasonable gun control to hold up this purchase.
  20. A ton of mixed messaging across the system under Avila, made Player Dev tough... Hearing a lot better things now between Garko and Harris. Frankly, this tracks. Even last year, the system showed a lot of signs. This year has been a great year on the system, IMO. More players emerging than fading.
  21. Keith said nice things about the Tigers within.
  22. Jung is going to be a Top 100 guy over the offseason and is performing well at AA... If he has a strong spring do you throw him on the Opening Day Roster and see if you can't catch lightning in a bottle and get a draft pick?
  23. I'm trying to figure out how probability and on-field production are mutually exclusive, when teams have 10-100 person analytics departments whose primary goal is to quantify the probability of on-field production.
