Well, if you have some guys in mind with numbers and you have to blow past your #1 slot to sign Crews, it can blow the rest of your draft up and potentially risk going over the 5% overage limit if you aren't careful. In short, those concerns are more about making sure your whole draft doesn't blow up and end up losing next year's #1 pick.

Hard to really say Harris was the guy making the call in those drafts though... Zaidi was running the show. You can probably get some clue from Metzler/Conner and their histories. But looking at pool strategy is going to give you a bit more clue than demographics of who happened to fall to them in the first roudn.

That just happens to be Extension season. My hunch is that is when the front offices have a bit of downtime and can hammer those deals out with the offseason over and draft prep not yet heated up. They also have a better idea of their budget and their CBT number at that point. The Tigers would be wise to work out a deal with Keith (or Greene). Because the CBT is based on AAV, these types of deals are smart for teams whose payroll will be increasing in future years because you can take a bit of AAV in your CBT number now against later. I bet it is moot for the Tigers going forward, but that is a factor for some teams, especially some teams who may be up against it now and can't really justify pushing that AAV up now. I suspect this is a big reason why the Tigers had to go year-to-year with Castellanos and JD Martinez back in the day instead of trying to lock them up.

Some picks are allowed to be traded. I understand why they don't allow draft day trades, though. The pace of the later rounds would make it drag for many additional if trades reset everything.

The new PPI rule completely removes this incentive.

How so?

Well, the big elephants in the room are Keith, Meadows, and Justyn Henry-Malloy. Keith, I've gone over to death, is somebody you want to keep that PPI tag attached to. Meadows just started heating up in the last month (as I replied to a Woodberry tweet about why he wasn't brought up when Baddoo and Greene were hurt: he hadn't earned it yet at that point). JHM is probably the one I would try to bring up, but his fielding clearly leaves a lot to be desired and it just just tough to have two DH-only RHB on your squad. Keep that sentence in the holster next time a Miggy fanboy says he's not hurting the team this year. Maybe they think Meadows and Malloy could get some prospect helium and enter the PPI tier by the end of the year, but I doubt it. Others, in rapid fire: Papierski and Knapp have both hit pretty well in Toledo for catchers. I wouldn't expect them to get the call unless there was an injury. Rogers has clearly established himself as the go-to catcher, and while Haase has tapered off this year, he does provide some flexibility playing capable outfield that those vets haven't. Jonathan Davis's opt out was ill-timed, as he would have gotten a shot a week later after the rash of outfield injuries. Kreidler's injury kept him from getting another shot. Donny Sands and Andre Lipcius haven't done enough to earn a call, and neither has Solak who was a one time decent starter for the Rangers. We'll see if Camargo can get going, but he is a definite churn option.

How much have the pitching injuries hurt this year's squad? They are winning bullpen games. Faedo and Olson have acquitted themselves well. The two costs I can think are they had to let Wentz wear it longer than ideal, and maybe a bullpen implosion or two could have been prevented with more rest. Having almost half the position players at or below replacement level is the issue. An issue I thought would be resolved by Harris churning harder. There is depth in Toledo and it is a bit surprising to me that they have chosen not to tap into it.

Also, re: Kreidler, you can't backdate a 60-day placement, so if you are going to maneuver the roster to get him on the 60-Day IL, because he is not already on the Major League IL, he would need to be out until September, and I'm just not sure that is the case.

I don't think Kreidler is manipulation worthy. But you can't pre-emptively put somebody on the 60, only when you need space. Perhaps he is the move when Brieske comes off the IL on Friday, although I suspect that may be a position player veteran on the active roster getting DFA to make room for Baddoo or Greene.

7 day in Toledo. He doesn't accrue service time there. It is up to the Tigers if they want to bring him up and 60-Day him to save the 40 man roster spot at the expense of his service time and MLB salary.

It was working very well in May, but across baseball... The Rays have the best record in baseball and platoon out the wazoo. The Rangers do too. The Braves have one, but they also has stars at at least six of their spots. The Dodgers are currently platooning three spots. The Orioles are platooning at 1B and 2B. I don't see any platoons on the Astros, but they have one left-handed starter and you aren't platooning Kyle Tucker.

Or the wrong era... Why play somebody 150 games when you know 30 of those match-ups are poor ones that a platoon partner can complement? Let's go back to the pre-Hinch Avila era plug-n-play model. "We need a starting shortstop? Jordy Mercer plays shortstop. Mission accomplished."

A lot to unpack on the last few posts... No. Marisnick is not the type of player who moves your cornerstone player to another position. He's a guy you bring in when you have three outfielders get hurt in the span of a week and dispose when they get back. If Carpenter is DH only, then where does the 30 million dollar albatross play? And do you bench one of your best hitters in such a restrictive way? The 40-man roster is full. Not sure who you are missing in your count, but they have 48 with 8 on the 60-Day, with three on the 60-Day nearing the end of their Toledo rehabs. And Blair Calvo is on the 40 in Toledo, so the list you are looking at is not right. This is the problem when people like McCosky fumble roster terminology. The mechanics of Marisnick's probably demotion are as follows. He is out of options, but he is also over five years service time. Out of options means he has to go through waivers to be sent to the minor leagues. Over five years service time gives him the right to refuse that assignment. Having been previously outrighted gives him the right to declare free agency instead of going to Toledo. So... he's likely going to clear waivers, and he accepted his assignment with the White Sox in may and decided to hang around. I bet he can be outrighted without incident. Being out of options does not mean he will be released. The only way he is released is if he refuses assignment and forces the Tigers hand. For these purposes, refusing assignment is not something that shows up in the transactions log, and declaring free agency is what Seth Elledge did a couple weeks ago.

Maton would not clear waivers and won't get DFA'ed.

Gonna have to make a 40 man room for Skubal, so Shreve's lack of options could work against him. Also a 40 man move for Brieske and Wingenter whose 30 day rehab limits are nigh.

Not that Aldred wasn't terrible, but I do wonder how many 90's Tigers pitchers were hurt by horrible fielding behind them. Pitchers weren's striking out nearly as many back then, so having some combination of Cecil Fielder at first base, aging Tram/Lou up the middle, Mickey Tettleton at C/RF, Gibson in CF, etc.

I don't know how much longer the Tigers can justify keeping Schoop around.
