Why is the distinction important? If a racist claims he only hates black people because they have a higher crime rate, not because of his inherent blackness, no one would claim that it's a valid or important distinction. Seems like its really a battle for the soul of the party. The MAGA faction has to either force their opponents to fold, thereby showing who's in charge, or they'll destroy the party trying to assert themselves.
